I am new member and reading a lot of boards. A wonderful site. I wish I had this board on my first rescue two and 1/2 years ago. I saved a 4 week old baby in the rain from a few wild cats who drug off all its siblings. At that point stepping in was the only human option. I saved him but it was scary going it alone.

Being the only person people know who has had a squirrel I took on my first call to help rescue another.

This one looks younger then my first I think 3 to 4 weeks? They sent it to me with a formula called Tomlyn Milk Replacer for Puppies.

He/she is pooping hard lil things after 5 feedings 3 hours apart now with me. Eating 1/4 tsp to just under 1/2 of the Tomlyn. But I am concerned its the wrong food and need advise on the brand and how to transition to another brand.

Sorry message is so long. 262349262350

You want to use the powdered Esbilac puppy formula (liquid is not the same). Make sure the third ingredient is "dried whey protein concentrate" as occasionally we find a can that is not the correct formulation (and is an older one squirrel do not do well on).

Edit: You can usually find this at places like Tractor Supply.

Do you have a weight on the little guy? You really need to feed by weight.

The baby weighs 53 grams. Eyes are shut and ears are slightly folded open.
It was brought to me via a third party from a person who had it for a week and was feeding it Tomlyn Milk Replacer for the last three days. I have had it since yesterday at 7pm. (gonna switch to esbilac)

I am just having trouble figuring out how much to feed him because he has been eating alot every 3 hours about 1/2 teaspoon from a slightly fatter syring. I am also getting thinner syringe as pressing it wont push out so much.

By this chart I think he is over eating. He had a bit of diarrhea first night and I lowered amount to 1/4 teaspoon and saw hard poo right away.

I am looking for clarification on amounts so that he is getting enough or not too much.

My first rescue ate very little I never saw poo thought for sure it was blocked up and gonna die and it grew so big and healthy. But it was a little bigger and older.

100g x .025 = 2.5 ml x 3 = 7.5ml total/day

mine

50g x .025 = 1.25 ml x 3 = 3.75ml total a day

thats much less then he is eating now. I am going to re weigh. make sure I am not miscalculating on my end.

thats much less then he is eating now. He will eat 1 ml every three hours which equals 8ml?

This chart is just for rehydration fluid replacement. You are right, you would be feeding way too little formula following this rehydration chart. With a baby that size (53 grams) he should be getting 5% - 7% of his body weight every 3-4 hours. I always start out on the 5% side so the baby does not get over-feeding diarrhea. You don't want that ! He should be getting approximately 2.7 cc at every feeding. Fluid replacement is different from the feeding amounts. Good luck with your little one. :Love_Icon
Yes ... good move to switch to Esbilac!!

Posting this here, and it is copied for UDoWhat's post in the other thread where you asked the same question. Just want to make sure you see the response.

Here is what I call the SquirrelBoard Cheatsheet for feeding. Usually when we reference how much a baby is eating we use cc's. If you are feeding with a syringe, does it have markings on it? Are you using a 5cc, 3cc or 1cc syringe? What kind of nipple do you have?

I may be the one to blame about the amount to feed. I replied to SGD in another thread how much to feed but was not precise and left out the "per feeding" when I replied. I take the blame about the confusion.... :hidechair

Sorry about that! :embar

Edit: SGD I am sooo glad to asked and got clarification!!!! :thumbsup

You guys are so awesome. I have three syringes. The newest is a tiny 1 ml thin one. I have another that is fat but thin end and has 5ml on it.

if 1 cc = 1 ml

So I am gonna feed it 2.7 ml or cc per feeding every 3 to 4 hours?

YES to the 1 cc equaling 1 ml. :thumbsup
AND
YES to the feeding amount.:thumbsup

Use the 1 cc syringe and refill. Do you have nipples for the syringes?
Go slow, I know you know that. :)

You are so very kind and I am so very grateful. last question.

Walmart had a PetAG Milk Replacer for puppies in powder form. It was not PetAG Esbilac. White canister blue text... same company but called Milk replacer not Esbilac.

Does you know if they are the same?

I can not find Esbilac.

I will feed the rest of what I have tonight and journey out tomorrow to some exotic pet stores.

I will look it up later and see if I can find the ingredients and compare it to the Esbilac. :dono
I have little mouths to feed, and we don't want them having a hissy fit. :hissyfit
I will let you know what I find. :thumbsup

Here is what I found for the PetAG Milk Replacer. There is NO whey protein in here, I'm not sure about the soy protein?

Call around tomorrow before you head out and ask if they have the powdered puppy esbilac.

I am calling around this morning to get the esbilac. I will read the back of the Esbilac and make sure its the Whey version.

I feel a little better knowing the importance of the ingredients too. Especially since what the lil one has been eating seems to have the right-ish ingredients.

I ordered some Esbilac from Amazon Monday and it arrived today. The right stuff (and not Chinese labeling like the picture!). A good price too (total was $11.19 + $0.78 tax) $11.97. I have prime so the shipping was free.
