Putter was a no brainier 1 week old baby squirrel . Momma would not reclaim. Very cooperative finders. Not to shabby on intake.
Now 2-3 weeks old.
About 4/5 days ago ...Had a spot near his mouth I blamed on milk burn. Triple antibiotic applied. I swear it made it grow.
Became a scab like crust across side and top of nose. This sometimes comes off after getting wet and comes off in one big piece. This then leaves behind moist grainy looking skin.
Tried manuka honey.. Seems better but he acts like it hurts when I apply it.
He has been kept separate from the staph kids and am using gloves even if though I doubt they are contagious . ( kitten formula immune system thing)
Pictures coming.

Do you have silvadene?

Only place I have found that sells it OTC. Vets use this stuff all the time and t is wonderful for things like this. It is used in human burn patients in areas where the skin is gone so no wound lips to pull together - take a long time to heal. That is similar to what you are looking at.
P managed to dig his back all up scratching and developed a staph infection this summer. I mixed betadyne and water - 1/4 cup water to 15-20 drops of betadyne. Used it to wipe all the areas down - thoroughly wet the areas, then wipe excess off with a cloth and leave the residue on his skin to dry. Did twice a day and in 2 days the redness was gone, in 3 I could see the dark gray that was new fur beginning. It did just fantastic on the staph, and at that dilution it is safe if they lick their fur.

No - I mentioned the betadyne for staph because you have been having trouble with it and it worked so darned well. On the face and around the mouth kind of screams formula burn - anything on his forelegs? They get it there when they grab the syringe.
The silvadene is great - first thing I grab for anything skin related.

Ok. I hear yah. Yeah formula burn was what I was thinking but the spreading and the fact I am meticulous... He has been alone for two weeks. So.. Has to be that though.
No nothing on the hands or arms.

We have seen all kinds of weird skin stuff this year. I am just shooting at the most obvious. There is really no reason not to also use the diluted betadyne solution on this place on his face before you put the meds on it. It is antibacterial, antifungal, does yeast...it really covers a whole bunch of bases.

How long can the diluted stuff be stored?

I made it fresh each time. How about 3-4 drops of betadyne in a Tablespoon of water. You are looking for the color of iced tea and that is just about right.

Boy, I have to say it looks more like staph or yeast infection to me.:dono I am having a lot of babies come in with yeast infections this year. My Vet is treating them with Nystatin. It is a crazy year for infections. :shakehead My Vet did do cultures on my babies.

M understanding is staph is everywhere.. It just takes the right combo to have the immune system not be able to catch it in its track .

I wondered about a yeast or a fungus. Is your vet using topical or oral?
The triple ABX cream .. I tried .. I swear it made it grow. It was just at the lip/whiskers.. The it went to the top of the nose. If it goes over the side to the other nostril.. I'm taking him in.
Trying the betadine idea..

My Vet is having me use the oral med. I had a 12 gram pinkie come in with yeast everywhere. And I mean everywhere. This really is a strange year for skin infections and other not often seen infections. Also it stands to reason that if you used a triple AB cream and it got worse it might be yeast. Idk for sure, but oral antibiotics can cause yeast to grow readily so I wonder if topical abs can do the same? Do you have a fungal cream? Animax (Panalog) cream is an anti-fungal. I think there are OTC meds for humans too that might help.
As for Mister P ... I think it takes "a perfect storm" to have staph over populate and rear its ugly head. I have seen his home. It is a palace ! Can't image why or how Mister P got a staph infection. Poor sweet boy.

I can get topical.. I could get the vet to give me nystatin. Darn I just through some away that had changed color.
He does it like to have it touched..
