Ok. I need a tutorial on Abcess .
My little staph boy Thor has no new spots but his fur is thin and sparse. His sister Fox is doing well. Both are gaining 2-5 g per day.
His skin is still flakey too.
I mentioned it in his other thread but he does indeed have two abscesses on his shoulder. This is very near where I sub Q'd him. They are not easily seen except now they are . One Abcess began to loose the hair.
Completed 7 days on clavamox. Staphy spots are gone.
I suspect when I sub q d him I introduced staph deeper. I was debating on if I just damaged the skin with too big a bubble of fluids.
But last night a " head" was clearly visible but deep.
I lanced it. The pus is super thick and deep. Flushed with saline and that helped soften it up. Almost solid. Got a little more put this am and am applying manuka honey and started him on clyidicure .
The area is not red or angry looking.
I have not messed with the second Abcess as its on the side of his neck and I am terrified of hitting his jugular.
I feel abandoned by my permit holder. God love her she keeps taking on animals and is overwhelmed herself .
Vet time?

262182 for comparison.. The beautiful fur of his sister Fox.
262183 the spot free belly of Thor. Much improvement there.
262184 Lanced Abcess #1 is hairless. The one above it nearer the ear is still covered in hair .
262185
Better view of the other unlanced and furry one.. Easier to feel than to see.

You may need to be stacking meds to address the abscesses.
I would suggest reaching out to HRT4SQRLS and discussing
with her, she is excellent in that field. :thumbsup

ML,
I'm sorry I'm not familiar with their history. How long have you had the babies?
Please, forgive me if this question is crazy but are you sure they're not bots? I know, it might be a crazy question but with my ongoing battle of the bots, I'm beginning to see bots EVERYWHERE. :crazy1 Before this is over for me and Susie, I'll need therapy. :rotfl
One other question... what is Clyidicure? I have no idea what that is. I couldn't even Google it. Could it possibly be Clindicure?

Np. Kitten milk babies with the finder for about 1 week.
Been with me 8 days. They are about 5 weeks I guess as their eyes opened... Came with a nasty case of either staph or ant bites. ( no ants mentioned by finder) but ..Clavamox was given.. Toward the end of that successful treatment these two big abscesses arrived on the boy only. Very deep IMO. One was uncessufully lanced 2 x getting only blood. But last night that came to a head and I lanced it good and big globs of pus came out. Flushed etc.
I just got done lancing the one by his ear. I apparently was not aggressive enough with my first attempt. This time the pus came out easier. I could feel the sac of pus under the skin. Flushed it.
Yes clindicure ( clidimyicin ). http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?51154-Rash-thin-etc-help&highlight=

It sounds like you have this under control. Draining the abscess was vital. With that done and the Clindamycin, this should heal nicely. By the third day, if you don't see improvement we need to reconsider but I do believe this will work. :thumbsup

How can I tell if I got it all out?

Ok..
So there is still pus in there.
It comes out like play dough .. And sometimes it comes out in little sesame seed sized blobs. It's VERY VERY DRY LIKE.
NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE.
Squeezing on it hurts him so much.
I can't tell if there is more in there. Yesterday I thought I had gotten a goodly amount and now today more. But not without reopening the scabs and smooshing and squeezing on it.
Is it dry/thick cause of the antibiotics?

A couple questions: when you subQ'd him what did you use? Was it from small sterile vials or a large bag of solution?
Did you subQ both babies or just this one?
I know I'm fixated on this BUT ... are you sure it wasn't a bot?

Although while I have never seen a bot in person I am pretty sure it was not a bot.
I opened the hole in the Abcess. He had no wounds just those pus filled dots at first. The large knot showed up around day 5 of the clavamox. It was not one of the pus filled dots.
I used a sterile bag of LRS with B 12 added by my vet. I always use a sterile needle to draw it up.
I subbed all three babies with different needles.
And have used the LRS before and after on different squees.
( and no I don't think your obsessed with the he bots :p )
Not trying to sound sharp .. I don't mind answering questions.
ESP since this is beyond anything I have seen.
Imagine cottage cheese with no liquid. - that's the pus I get out. NO LIQUID. And sometimes it comes out like sesame seed sized chunks.. And sometimes lentil sized chunks..
And I think the two abscesses are actuall one peanut sized Abcess . Sometimes when I am working on one .. Stuff starts out the other.
It's crazy. I have seen thick pus before but not practically solid.
He is doing ok behavior wise. I was worried I stressed him too much yesterday.

Steph, if you have Derma-GeL, after you drain the abscesses you can pack them with DG using a syringe. The DG will keep the pus in more of a liquid state, making it easier for you to get out, less irritating for Thor and it will also help against the abscess seeding to other areas/getting larger.
The other thing I've done with great success is to put Baytril IN the abscess (not Cipro, liquid injectable Baytril 22.7). I used the Total Daily Dose. Drain pus, flush with saline, put Baytril in, smoosh it around to make sure it gets all over, then flush with saline lightly. I did this once a day. The second daily cleaning was just a saline flush.
Good luck!!

Ok.
Radical change .
After the last squeeze session I had a new case of something else distract my attention. So I never got to use the baytril.
I can barely find the one by his ear at all now. I reopened it yesterday to flush and maybe use the baytril...and there was nothing in it that could be seen.
The other bigger and older one was far more deflated. I opened it up to and got nothing . At this point both spots just look like small scratches. So I am going to just keep doing the topicals and the oral Clindicure. I guess if one fills back up or he goes down hill its time to call the vet.
This morning the spots were even more deflated and still smaller. The only swelling I can find is the cut I made. But not swollen in a red way just a grainy way. It is healing.
So If I got 90% of the puss out.. will the body take care of the rest with the meds? BUt I am really not able to find anything else to squeeze or drain.

You do not have to get 100% of the pus out. Get as much out as you can and then let his immune system and the ABs start to work. Keep the injury open and clean enough regularly to prevent additional buildup.

Good news .
I took Thor into the vet and the vet gave him a look see and declared the remainder of the one lump to be scar tissue.
She does want him to stay on meds for another 7 days though. She said it must have been quite the infection.
