Hello all,
Some of you may be familiar with our little Newton (tooth issues, NR). Anyway, since we've taken him in, we have become the go to squirrel people, and we had two babies come to us today. They aren't hanging out with him though-he's at home in his palace :)
My mom's friend stumbled upon them while walking the dogs today around 10 am, and since they're older (eyes still closed, but totally covered in hair, and pretty mobile) it's REALLY warm today, and they were in good shape, I advised her to let them be for a while. They left them in an open box nailed to the tree by where they were found (there are too many dogs in the neighborhood to leave them on the ground). After 4 hours, Mom still hadn't returned, so I came to investigate.
They were both dehydrated, and the little girl was COVERED in fly eggs. I searched around for mom, and I am pretty sure I found her, and she was not alive :(
So, we took them back and are waiting for a rehabber to get in touch with us, I got all the fly eggs off of them both, and I'm trying to rehydrate them in the mean time. Baby boy is ravenous, and is peeing clear immediately following his fluids (Pedialyte), but I just got baby girl drinking about two hours ago, and she has yet to pee.
I know the general consensus is to rehydrate for 12-24 hours, but baby boy keeps trying to nurse on his sister, my finger, and in the air, so I just started him on 1/4 formula and 3/4 rehydration fluid, and we got him to poop right after! It was a bit runny at first, but became solid almost right away. Now, I don't know how much to give him or how often, since it isn't strictly formula or strictly fluid?
Baby girl is still drinking 1 cc per hour or so of Pedialyte, but has yet to pee....I think she is probably 6 or 12 hours behind her brother. I got their weights as best I could with my mom's old food scale-she is about 60 grams, and he is closer to 70.
Let me know what you guys think...hoping to hear from a rehabber soon!
