We rescued a baby squirrel a few days ago that had fallen from its nest. Everything has been fine.. Drinking and using the bathroom. But just about an hour ago he bagan pawing at his mouth like something was stuck. He seems disoriented and will go in circles with mouth open and sticking the front paws in his mouth. I don't know what to do. In the beginning I assumed he was wanting milk but after placing a drop in his mouth he wouldn't even swallow it. I am so afraid to lose him and don't know what I should do. He is around 4-5 weeks old. He has long bottom teeth so maybe that's the problem? Please help..

Milk?? What are you feeding him and with what?
Could he have aspirated while drinking. (milk coming out of nose)

Hi there-

Okay hold the baby up to your ear, do you hear clicking? What are you feeding baby and how to do you administer?
Can you post a picture of baby?

We will help you thru this!

Kitten milk replacer was all we could find around here. And we have been using a small kitten nursing bottle. He hasn't had any diarreah from it. I have been paying close attention when feeding and have yet to see any milk come out of the nose, however Im sure that's still a possibility..

No clicking except for the sound of his tongue moving because he keeps opening and closing his mouth. He has been on kitten mild replacer with a kitten nursing bottle. I will post picture!

Hi Abrooke

Yikes, unfortunately Kitten Milk is harmful to squirrels. I know you didn't know. My suggestion would be to hydrate and flush out baby's system:

this is the homemade recipe recommended on tsb.
1 tsp salt (teaspoon)
3 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
1 quart warm water

Can you do this now? Warm it up first.

What city are you in, maybe we can find a rehabber close to you to pick the baby tomorrow

How is the breathing?

It's really hard to tell because he won't stay still. It doesn't seem labored. Short and quick from what I can tell

PeeWee's Mom is right on target. See above post.

Definitely start the hydration if he will take it and go very slow, that bottle is not a good tool for feeding baby squirrels. Baby has to be warm before feeding and what is fed has to be very warm, not scalding but warmer then one would feed a infant child.
If he is still struggling do not force him to eat!

No problem!
Keep him warm and hydrate (only) every few hours (even if it is only a few drops each time) until morning and hopefully we can find a rehabber near you to connect you with.
Continue stimulating him after each hydration.
Thank you for reaching out so soon, this can be turned around!
I'm off for a few hours of ZZZ until my next feeding parade!

Thank you so much. You are such a lifesaver. Had no problem getting him to drink what you suggested. He has seemed to settle a little bit and I will continue to monitor and hydrate him.

I tried to post a picture but I am on my iPhone and for some reason it wouldn't let me on the thread. He drank the mix that was suggested above without struggle. What do you suggest for feeding?

The hydration fluid will be fine for now, hopefully we can find someone for you tomorrow.
Recommended formula is the new Esbilac puppy formula with pre and probiotics.

I will send it now. I have looked into Fox Valley Nutrition milk replacer for squirrels because I have just seen all of the recommendations on other threads from this website. I would do a rush order to get next day delivery if that's what he needs. What is your opinion on that?

The Esbilac can be purchased at most pet supply stores and many WalMarts as well. If your set on Fox Valley you will want to purchase the 20/50 as the 32/40 is no longer recommended due to previous issues with digestion. You will also need to obtain a 1cc syringe and preferably nipples to go with it.

Here are your pictures, picture will enlarge by placing mouse over it.
This baby looks relatively good and is just as cute as can be! :Love_Icon

Thank you for posting the pictures for me. He seems to be back to normal. (Just sleeping now) The Esbilac is sold out at our local store but there is one 30 min away that I will go get. However, the picture online offered by Tractor Supply doesn't have the pre and probiotics at the top..

I would not worry about the picture used in the advertising, we have seen that before. I am still uncertain if that it a newer or older label? Seems they would eventual take the banner "Now with.. " since it has been in there for quite some time now. We are wanting you to avoid the "old formulation" from a few years ago, we have not seen anyone buy that recently and hopefully all those are expired by now and out of circulation. But we want to be certain since the old stuff is bad stuff! The third ingredient should be "whey protein" (that is another clue).

KMR is bad, really bad. I had a round with a little girl this spring that was given KMR; her brother died before they allowed me to intervene and take her. It was a battle for 10 days to get her straightened out!

On back of can in the ingredients section 3rd ingredient should read "dried whey protein concentrate."
If it does that will be the new product with the pre and probiotics.
