At what age should my 5 week old squirrel start pooping pellets? He eats 6 cc's of GME full strength (canned) every 4-4/12 hours. He's a healthy little guy, but still has loose stools. He has just opened his eyes this week, and I have gotten him Forti-Diet to start feeding him. Should he still have loose stool at this time in his young life? thank you for any information you can provide.

Ah.. No. He should have been pooping pellets all along.

Can you post a picture of the poop? Is it runny, pastey, totally liquid?

Is it green, yello, white, foamy, chunky like cottage cheese?

Have you ever seen blood?

We don't usually feed by age but by body weight. However, I have some five weekers That are taking 6 cc as well but that amount was based on their weight.

Do you have a gram scale?

Also.. I know.. I ask lots of questions but.., anyhow., how long have you had this little one?

Can you switch him to the powdered puppy Esbilac with probiotics?
The canned Goat's milk may be the problem with his poops.
We typically don't keep them on GM for too long, we recommend it only as a temporary formula.

Keep him on the formula as long as possible. It is the best insurance against MBD.

I'm not a rehabber, but I have a very good friend who is. She agrees with Nancy. She only keeps her babies on GMF for about 4 weeks, 5 tops and then switches them over to Fox Valley.

Agreed, should be pooping pellets all along. The rehabbers can help you with that.

Good luck with your baby :grouphug

I totally forgot about the FV 20/50 since this little one is the right age for this now.
I use the 50/50 mix of Esbilac and Fox Valley, right on up until they wean themselves.

By GME, I assume you are referring to the liquid Goat Milk Esbilac. I believe others have had problems with the GME. Switching to the powdered puppy Esbilac or FoxValley 20:50 will probably fix this problem.

He does not have diarrhea, watery or bloody stool. It is soft. I have had him 3 weeks today. I think he is about 5 weeks old, in comparing him to the pictures I've seen on the internet, when trying to guess his age. He is very healthy looking, has a good appetite, but in reading somewhere, that he should poop pellets and his is orange, pudding consistency. It was firmer this morning. I crumbled up a tiny bit of Forti-Diet pellet, and mixed with a tiny bit of milk and he liked that. He did not like the dry pellet, I'm sure because it was new to him. I will try the puppy powder esbilac. He has certainly gained weight and is very active, but I was just concerned about the consistency of his poop. Thank you for the advice!

I agree. This should be the first step. If the pudding poop has not cleared up in 2-3 days after being on the Esbliac Puppy with PRO BIOTICS then there is something else going on. I suspect it will clear up.

I weighed him today. His weight is 80 grams. Is there a feeding schedule per body weight available?

The guideline is 5-7% of body weight. So at 80 grams that would be 4ML - 5.6ML. Here is a link to some helpful information, note the "Next" and "Back" options, there are a total of 6 pages of info.

Ditto.. and that amount will increase with the body weight. You should expect at LEAST a 2 gram a day gain. So tomorrow.. weigh baby. If baby weighs 82 grams then you will multiply 82x .05 that answer will give you the minimum.
