I have a unique special baby that is on amoxicillin for clicking, she has been on it for three days. She is taking amoxicillin 50 mg 15 ml the dose is .05 twice a day.My vet is on vacation and my baby is getting worse.I thought she was getting better and she actually had a decent day yesterday. Now today clicking much worse and sleeping all the time She will not take her formula but did take a little coconut water from a 1cc syrinqe.Problem is I have been reading on the board that Baytril might be better. I called my vets office and explained the situation and asked if the other vet there would be willing to put up some baytril, since my vet is gone.I just got a call back that the vet there today will not help me or put up the baytril.I am so upset and they know my vet would put it up for me and he is always willing to see her.So they said he will be back on Monday! I told them you just wantme to sit here and listen to her click and deteriate till Monday? They ars very sorry!,I am so pissed right now.No other vets in the area that will see her tried last time she had pneumonia and I posted to the board for help.Does anyone have any suggestions how I can help her?She is a special needs dwarf squirrel with neuro problems that I think has been having some mini seizures the last few days.I even called the Dr. Emerson in Florida and requested a phone consult that I am willing to pay for.She was not in yesterday and the office said they would leave message for her today and I hope she will call me.But I am in Wisconsin so it is not like she can look at
her.Sorry this is so long just trying to give as many facts as I can.I have devoted the last couple of months to love her and give her the best care possible. Please do not tell me to find a rehabber near here cuz already tried and no luck that is why I have her and committed to see this thru. From what I have been told by some board members she will probably not have a long life.I just will not give up if I can help her by finding her the right antibiotic.Pushing liquids but not very interested .Please give me some advice if anyone has any ideas. Thanks for reading this!

First, make sure she is warm. They have trouble thermoregulating under the best of circumstances and she is sick now, so sether up with some gentle bottom beat via a heating pad under her container.

Start calling your friends, especially the women. Cipro can be used instead of Baytril - it is sort of the human version of Baytril. It is prescribed about 99% of the time when you have a urinary tract infection. You need just ONE pill and you need to know the size in milligrams. They are usually 500mg, but are also available in 250mg. If you can get your hands on a single cipro someone here can help you to dilute and dose from it.

I would also call Dr. Emerson back - she has been on vacation I think and likely has a lot of calls to return. MAKE SURE YOU MENTION THIS IS A DOWNS BABY!!! She has a very, very soft spot for them and that little bit of info might move you closer to the front of the "call back" list. :grin2

What time was the last dose?

Is she laboring to breathe? If so, taking her into the bathroom and cranking the shower on hot to steam the room up may give some relief.

You mentioned mini-seizures. Can you give more detail about what has been happening to her?

Hi Sue. Oh god I am heartbroken your sweetie is so sick. Go to the pet store and see if you can find cipro in the fish section--I think it's in the same section with fish food. Go to the drugstore and tell them you have a prescription for cipro for a uti and your dog ate it and can they give you one until you can call your doctor tomorrow. LIE! Call every woman you know. If you can't find cipro of course give her something--and amoxicillin is something. Monday is a loooooong way away when your little one is sick and Penelope is a very fragile little girl.

So I called my vets wife on her cell phone this a.m. and left a message to please call me and she just called back. Now my vet will not give me baytril. Will give me clavamox.I think he thinks i am nuts! Why are people treating me like I am a big pain the ass.So now I am going to go pick up the clavamox and I better not run in to that other vet in there or I am going to go off on somebody.Sorry for the rant!

Clavamox is an EXCELLENT choice - better than the Baytril. It is much broader spectrum, and since we don't know what is wrong with this sweet baby, you have a better chance with something broader spectrum.

If you are not, you should be giving probiotics with these meds. Do not give within 2 hours of the medicine dosage.

I am concerned about what I think could be mini seizures. She has periods of complete lethargy. She often just stops and stares while hanging her head.I saw her go off in a little trance and start to really shake. It seems like this takes a lot out of her. This is something I wanted to discuss with Dr.Emerson if she calls me.Could this clicking be any thing else connected with these neuro issues? I hope I am not going down the wrong path thinking she has pneumonia. I have been reading posts about other squirrels seizing.Diet of course is a big concern although she is very hard to get to eat and hydrate.Any thoughts?

She's a neuro baby. I'm betting her "stares" aren't related to the clicking. You are a good persistent mama. I'd say the pneumonia is the biggest problem right now. Get that under control and then consult Dr. E for suggestions about her other issues.
