I don't if the sound I heard was a squirrel, but I thought it was. It sounded like a chirp them a meow. It would be five to ten seconds and sometimes longer between the sounds. So one chirp, one meow and then silence for a little bit. I do have an audio recording although it isn't the best. Anybody have an idea what I am talking about?

Yes. That is it. I saw this video before, but couldn't find it. So what could he be saying?

Some say it's alert sound to danger.

I believe the "chirp.......meeeeeeeeeoweeee " is the alarm sound squirrels make when a flying threat like a hawk is detected.
However, they usually freeze in place and will often flatten themselves down on the ground when making this alarm.
The sound in that video sounds a little different that the calls I Have heard my wilds make but it is roughly similar.

All my babies make this sound when practicing to be adults. It is the most forlorn sound, but IMO it is a signal to others but I don't know for what. They do it at odd times so I can't pin it down to a specific incident.
I always feel sad when I hear this call, not sure why. My grey squirrels do it, so far not my red.
It is a lament.
I could be totally wrong but thought I'd throw this out as a possibility.
Hope you find an answer and get to share it here on the forum!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't see anything around. I even saw one squirrel eating while this one wailed. Maybe it is one of my babies growing up. Hadn't heard it before in my yard until now.

I'll try to find the link.. But the is a man who studied the and ran experiments using different predator shapes to get squirrels to alert.
According to him and my releases TD is correct.
You don't have to see it.
When I first heard my guys doing this I could hear a wild way off in the distance . Your guy may have been answering a wild to.
It's like that call says " look to the sky! Warn every one! Look at the sky!"
And so they do.

Could they be warning about a storm? It had become dark and windy when I heard this.
