I have a flying squirrel. His name is Mr.mouskawitz he is one year old. For the last two days he hasn't ate,I've noticed. Today I tryed picking him up an he was practically lifeless and cold. He seemed as if he was going to die. I haven't fed him anything he can't eat. An d he isn't hurt that I can see. I didn't know what to immediately do I read something and gave him a little drop of benadryl. His eye seemed a little puffy. It seems to have gone down an his body is warm now. Though he is still weak an not playing. I gave him water through a dropper also. I don't know what else I can do. Please help me... I'm desperate.. I don't have a vet or the money for a emergency visit either. Any advice will help.Mr. flash mouskawitz is part of my family and he can't die if I can help it....

If he is not eating he most likely is not drinking either and is dehydrated.
I would suggest began hydrating immediately drop by drop if necessary.

Homemade hydration fluid recipe:
Re-hydration fluid:
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water.

His blood sugar may also be low. If you have molasses (best) or any other
type syrup take and rub some on his gums to help bring sugar level up.

At 1 year old I am assuming he is not still on formula?
Can you list all that he is fed please.

I got him 3 months ago he was already one. I feed him fruit. He eats raspberries his favorite. Blackberry blueberry an I recently gave him an cherry an a grape he didn't eat them. His snack is peanut butter an he loves dried banana chips. Also almonds an cashews too. I have a dried fruit meadly he just loves with nuts mixed in no salt added.he doesn't really care for the blueberry or blackberry. I gave him a strawberry also that he hasn't ate. I feel like he might've got bitten by a spider but can't find any bites

It's the diet, not good at all! Lack of calcium and flyers require a high protein diet. Unfortunately what you have described with the not eating, unable to maintain body temp and the lethargy your baby has mbd. Do you have any calcium tabs such as tums? Mbd is extremely serious and he needs to get calcium in him now!

Please open and read the emergency treatment for MBD!

I agree with stepnstone.
Absolutely, 100% ... the diet is deficient. There is no calcium in the diet. Please follow the Emergency Metabolic Bone Disease protocol and it might save Mr.Mouskawitz' life if it's not too late.

Handle him very carefully, his bones are very fragile.
Seizures also accompany MBD so be forewarned. :sadness
If he has a seizure, put some molasses, honey or syrup under his tongue but for now, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is getting calcium into him STAT. It can save his life. MBD is painful so he might show signs of pain. Also, watch for chewing body parts. The pain and nerve tingling can cause them to chew on themselves.

Your baby is in extremely critical condition at this moment. There is no time to lose. Get them Tums started NOW.

stepnstone and HRT4SQRLS are dead-on correct: it's his diet. Please please follow that link and begin the MBD protocol immediately, to save your little guy!

Why are you giving Benadryl?
You need to continue giving the hydration fluid ... drop by drop if necessary.
Keep him warm ... against your body OR a heating pad on low.

You MUST give him the Tums! Please follow the MBD protocol. Get at least half a 500mg Tum in him incrementally over the next 24 hrs. Without the calcium, he is unlikely to survive.

Others will sound in, I'm at work now and can't stay on.

The 500-600 mg on the protocol is for a larger grey squirrel. Flyers are tiny so at least half of a Tums will do to start.

Please stop Benadryl. Keep hydrating with water AND give him Tums (just the regular Tums you can get at any CVS, grocery store or pharmacy).

He MUST get at least 1/2 of a 500mg Tums over the next 24 hours! Give him a little bit throughout the day so his Calcium levels will remain steady.

Please start this immediately, your babies survival depends on this. Keep him warm and hydrated through all of this!

I just see the mbd message started his first dose already. Thank you so much. He has a strong personality so he will pull through. And when he does he will have a vet. An a balanced diet. Thank you squirrel board.....

I just saw this. Please keep everybody posted. We really care. Don't assume he's all better if he rallys and starts acting more normal. MBD takes MONTHS to correct. His entire skeletal system and internal organs are involved. A good diet will set him straight--hopefully with few side effects--but it takes a loooong time. You're a good mama and thank you for reaching out.

Oh--TSB is all about pictures! NEED pictures!

Ok, I'm home now so I want to summarize what you need to be doing.

#1 Keep him warm. He is too fragile now to maintain his own body temperature. He doesn't have any reserves to be fighting to keep his body warm. He needs all the energy he has to maintain his vital functions.

#2 Continue hydration. You can continue with the hydration fluid previously posted for 24 hrs. After that, drop the salt and give water sweetened with sugar or honey. If you have too, give it drop by drop.

#3 He MUST receive the calcium per the MBD protocol. It's better to give the calcium in smaller increments spaced out over time rather than large doses at one time. The goal is to keep the calcium levels in the blood up.

#4 You must get some calories into him. You said he hasn't eaten for days. I tried to think of a few things that flyers really love so that we can get some calories into him. Offer him some avocado (ripe but not mushy), YoBaby vanilla full fat yogurt, WaxWorms or meal worms. You can also try Ensure (butter pecan flavor). These are things that you can get locally. There are some things you will need to order also but these are for now.

Here is a list of items that you need to order. The first is Blocks specially developed for flying squirrels. It will provide all the vitamins and minerals that he needs. He needs to eat one per day. They need to be stored in the freezer. The FoxValley 32/40 formula is for flyers. It has higher protein (32) which flyers need. He might not take it. I have 3 flyers. One of my flyers drinks the FoxValley out of a tiny bowl. He is almost 5 years old. :tilt My other 2 won't drink it. If he will drink it, it is the best insurance that you will ever have against MBD because it contains calcium.

The calcium carbonate powder is what you will switch to when it arrives. It will replace the Tums (although the Tums will work if money is an issue). The syringe is helpful for delivering the calcium.
