View Full Version : Baby Squirrel or Mice
These babies had their nest cut out of a tree. The person that did it was able to collect 7 of them and bring them to me. I thought they were squirrels at first but now am leaning towards mice. I have been feeding them puppy milk every few hours. I have had them a week now and they are getting more active. Thanks for the help

I'm sorry these pictures are so small I can't really tell what they are.
Can you post some more?

This is ONLY a guess but I would say not squirrels. .. mostly because I'm not sure 7 babies is a normal litter for most tree squirrels? And I was told most squirrels have black toenails
But it's strange that they were up in a tree? I didn't think rats or mice usually build nests in trees so?

I vote that they are rats, definitely not squirrels.

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess I need to figure out what to do now. I bought some squirrel formula that I am either going to have to resell or send back. They are still cute no matter what they are.

The RatBehavior site has a section comparing rats to mice that may help confirm. It describes the physical differences:

I think pappy1264 is right that these are likely Roof rats. The nest was in an ideal location for them. Take a look at the chart listing the differences between Roof and Norway rats:

Thanks everyone, Thankfully I have had a bunch of different animals and keep all their stuff when they pass. I had an empty 10 gallon tank (also have a 20 gallon breeder tank), bowl, and water bottle. I feed the wild birds and squirrels so I have bird seed on hand.
Their little eyes have been open a few days now and they are fully furred. I have Henry squirrel blocks on the way thinking I had squirrels.
You all have been so helpful and I am so thankful.

Give them the Henry's blocks - they will love them. I have a five year old deer mouse and he eats HHBs every day and has his entire life.

That is good news about the eyes being open because now you know their age: 2+ weeks old. Two weeks old is a time of major changes in a bub's life for both rats and mice because they develop the same. Not only do the eyes open around 14 days old, but they start going potty by themselves (obviously verify they all are) and they start weaning; thus, solids can be introduced into the diet now. You can scatter the wild birdseed and lab blocks on the bottom of the tank to simulate hunting.
They were definitely brought to the right person because it is clear they are being well cared for and loved-exactly what they require to thrive. I know they will be keeping you busy, but please update your thread with how they are doing when you get a minute.
I know everyone here likes pictures so here are the mice. Any time they here my voice they wake up and come running.
