They are about 3ish weeks old and 42g each. I thought they had to be grays, but they are so red and their eye rings are so light that I am wondering.

Greys. I should have taken pictures of the baby reds at the wildlife center that I saw yesterday when I stopped. They are about the same age and very distinctive from those. Plus I suspect that your greys have some white shadow on their tails. Reds have red tails so get a redish shadow that is a bit brighter than baby fox squirrel tails.

How many are there?
Are they all from the same litter?

I can see why you are questioning them being greys or reds. However the weight of 42 grams at 3 weeks is WAY too much for a little red.
Sorry Kim Cassidy. :shakehead :tilt

Maura, if kcassidy wants to go with you the next time you feed,
and she has a net with her......................leave her in the car.
Hey you even fed a red last year.
Pretty soon, you will be the go to person when a red squirrel
question arises..........move over fireweed. :grin2

Wow, I didn't know reds were so uncommon in some areas. I have them in my backyard. Next week I should get a chance to feed them where I volunteer. There is an absolutely gorgeous albino there now, and one that's jet black, with ultrasoft fur.
Has anyone ever seen the blond phase of a gray? Very rare.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy What the WHAT? I want Reds and will meet you, sadly I don't have any Blinkers, but someday I will ;)
Kristi! We had a blonde mama in our yard last year ! .. I thought I was going crazy at first.. I would see this blonde tail go scooting through the trees.. Then I thought maybe she was just a dirty albino, but I finally got her to settle down so I could see her better, and her eyes were not red, but typically pigmented.. As the year progressed, her tail got so huge and fluffy and blonde.. It was amazing. She was beautiful. I've watched for her this year, but she must have moved on, as a bunch of noisy, scrappy adorable little reds have taken over my trees. Sadly, I was never able to get her to hold still for a decent picture- BUT- Here is a picture from a news article about a blonde squirrel that looks exactly like her! http://tinyurl.com/qzh6bo8 The blonde type is called Leukistic, and it is caused by a genetic defect in pigment cells.. Here is the wikipedia article on leukism.. very interesting read! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leucism

Wow, Liza, that's is so cool! You got to watch one for the whole summer! Very fortunate indeed. Thanks for the links - it's interesting just to see a photo of one. And the photos of the leucistic alligator and peacock are pretty amazing, too. Interesting article.
