Hi Friends
I need some help with this little one.
Last Tuesday 4-14-15 around 330pm I got a call on two baby squirrels with eyes closed that were found in a wall were a building was being torn down.
The caller a farm lady that took them in and was trying to care for them.
She was used to raising farm animals rabbits and goats but not wild life.
She read up on baby squirrels and got a box with towel with a heating pad under them and gave them Pediatric Electrolyte with a dropper..
They were very dehydrated.
The grey female drank pretty good for her with a dropper and she got her to pee some.
The black male did not drink very well and did not pee very good.
He has a front leg skin injury.
She feed them some more then called a wild life rehabber that referred her to me.
She bought them to me at work at 415pm.
I thanked her for saving them ...then I went to work on the little ones.
They were both very dehydrated ...lots of skin wrinkles.
Looked like they must of been without a mother for 2-3 days ?
The grey female just had lots of skin wrinkles no injuries is crawling around.
The black male did not look good..he kind of just laid there breathing.
He has surface skin torn on a front leg.
They weighted 64 grams each.
I started the re-hydration process right away.
I use fox valley Electrolyte oral
and Lactated Ringers SubQ Injections when needed.
I had to give SubQ two times to the black male
I Kind of pushed them hard they were very wrinkled.

The grey female is looking great wrinkles almost gone.
She is crawling all around inside the container.
She is pooping and peeing good.
Next day or so may try some half strength 32/40 formula with her.
The black male ..not so well..I think he is close to being re-hydrated.
But he is having leg troubles with three legs.
Both back legs and the left front leg are not moving.
The toes and legs are swollen.
The right arm moves good and his head moves..he drinks good ..even yarns
whiskers are out and moving.
His tail moves some when I wipe him to pee and poop.
He has not been peeing or pooping good.
I see a wet spot sometimes were he lays looks like maybe pee.
The poop is black like the grey females but very few.
He is moving himself around the container some.
The back legs just hang..not sure if they broke ?
or something fell on him..or he was pulled from wall...I dont know ?
I have not seen him in pain..or complaining about pain.
He must be in pain....
Should I put him down ?
Let him keep trying ?
He is drinking on his own...
Not sure if this new swelling will go down..or if he is in pain ?
My eyes are starting to get wet.......
He is some pictures from this morning.
Thanks

Steve, I am not familiar with the FV Electrolyte mix. Does it have sodium (salt) in it? I am wondering if this little guy is showing signs of edema - the puffiness - due to salt buildup from all of the rehydration solution.
If it DOES have sodium I would continue giving additional hydration but just with either plain water or sugar water (1 teaspoon sugar in 1 cup water). I would offer him that plus formula and give him some time - if it IS salt related it will begin to slowly flush itself away once the salt source is gone.

Poor little guy. You said he was pulling himself along--normal baby pulling or injury pulling? If his back legs aren't working at all he may have a spinal injury. If it's edema from the excess salt, the swelling should resolve itself. If it's injury he may need some additional help and meds. Are you in Iowa? Oh-- noticed the 32/40 FV. Better the FV for older babies or Esbilac puppy formula with probiotics. There's been a whooooooole lot of issues with the 32/40. There have been deaths attributed to it just not devolving and turning to concrete in the little tummies. Babies have died. You can get Esbilac at most pet stores, Tractor Supply. Better safe than sorry. It's the one with the blue band at the top--says "with pre and probiotics". Healing love to your babies--specially the little sick boy.

That's exactly what I thought right away, possible edema. .. have they been given any formula or nutrition also during this time or have they only been on dehydrating fluids for the last 3+ days?
I especially lean towards edema because it looks like the swelling is more pronounced on one side. .. probably the side he's been laying on? The fluid gravitates to lowest point of extremities usually

Hi Critter Mom
Yes says it has 5.30% min of Sodium
I thought it may have something to do with the swelling.
I seen this in people....I never heard the name edema before.
I will make a sugar water mix and try.
Thanks

Hi Chickenlegs
I have not seen him pull himself.
He is in different spots in the container so he is moving.
probably with his one good arm.
I just seen his tail move on its own.
I am worried about a spinal injury
I hope that the edema is the cause of his legs not moving
The 32/40 FV I have used about every day for the last couple of years.
I mix goats mix and yogurt and heavy cream in with the 32/40
I have not had any troubles.
I will check out for sure.
and I will check out the Esbilac puppy formula with probiotics.
Many Thanks for the information and warnings and well wishes.

Hi LaurelLynn
No just the dehydrating fluids for the last three days.
I do not like giving formula till there totally hydrated.
It seems like they do not digest the formula right and they go down hill.
I hope I can get the swelling to stop.
Thanks for the edema information makes sense.
I am thinking his front arm is dislocated ...there is a bone bump on his chest.

Steve, I would start offering them formula - just dilute it more than usual (3 to 1 or even 3.5 to 1) at first, and offer them the sugar water in between feedings. They will get water with the food (plus the nutrition of course) and also the extra in between if you are still worried about hydration. It will take a bit for the swelling to go down if this is edema.

You have gotten excellent advice so far Steve.
Just throwing this out there.
This was recommended to SammysMom,
from a long time rehabber. Pediasure Clear Sidekicks.
The reasoning for these is that it not only hydrates, but offers nutrition.
Here's a link just for you to see what they look like. They have different flavors as well.
So far I haven't tried them myself, but SammysMom swears by them.

Steve I just read this from the Fox Valley site:
ElectroStat
Powdered electrolyte formula for oral re-hydration and introducing
Mix 1 teaspoon (4g) into 3 ounces of warm (100 F) water. Mix until dissolved.
Feeding directions
For rehydration:
Feed solution to provide approximately 40 ml of solution per kg bodyweight daily, divided into several feedings. Feed as the sole source of nutrients for no more than one day. For oral use only.

Hi Critter Mom
I gave them a 3 to 1 diluted formula at 4pm and they both loved it.
They both ate 4.0cc
I been studying the Re-hydrating a squirrel sticky.
I am getting ready to run to Walmart to buy some infant glucouse.
I think the swelling happened because I am doing Re-hydrating longer than the 24 hours what I usually do.
The salt is gathering more.
I hope I can get the swelling down.
I will mix some infant glucouse in between the 3 to 1 diluted formula feedings.
Many Thanks

Oh Steve, we are all learning.
AND with ALL that you have going on,
there's NO TIME to read and study, that's for "off hours", but then
again, you don't have those either. :)
I have never used this before, so I went to their site and found
what you were using.
I learn daily on this board.

However, since he may have edema from too much sodium,
perhaps just the sugar water would be best.

4 cc seems like a lot for these little guys. What do they weigh? They don't know they're full until 5 min. after it happens. Careful not to rush things with emaciated babies, even when it seems like getting them hydrated quickly is vital. Their systems could be changed by emaciation and unable to handle quick fluid influx. It can stress the heart and lungs, as well as kidneys. They also need the kind of nutrients, fat and fiber in formula, even if a baby isn't fully hydrated within the first 24 hours. Their organs need to start going again soon, in baby steps of course but with the idea that they will be transitioned to full formula sooner rather than later, and if necessary there can still be hydration between meals. Overfeeding is very easy, and should be avoided.

Oh, and if you think he might have a spinal injury you should be moving him as little as possible for a while, and always support his whole body when you do move him. Keep them in a calm, quiet, dark, cozy place.

I noticed this morning when rereading this thread the amount of hydration given.
I don't think that the amounts that were posted are correct.
I am going to send Steve a pm for clarification.
I doubt that a 64 gram squirrel could take 23 cc's in the first 5 1/2 hours?
Sometimes when we post the decimal point gets misplaced.

Hi Nancy
I got the amount of hydration posted right.
I use 1.0cc syringes and count them as given.
I can not see very well at all though
I tore my left eye retina two times like my right eye back in 2013
I had a couple surgeries the middle of February and start of March.
I just use my right eye now to see.
My right eye is still healing too.
all I can see out of my left eye is distortion and waves
So we been trying our best to do with what I got.
More than likely it was running out the side of mouths.
But by the looks of the little one I totally over hydrated him and have a mess
So Sorry Little one.
I should pass my syringes to someone else

You are one of the most caring, attentive rehabbers around!
You should never pass your syringes on to anyone, they would never
come close to what you are doing!!!!!!!!!

I, too, am sorry about your eyes! I've heard about similar ailments too much for comfort. My dad, mom and uncle went through retinal tears/detachments, and since there's a genetic component I'm almost waiting for it to happen to me.

Hi Steve, Remember all babies need calories and nutrition after 24 hour on hydration fluids alone. They can not go without formula for more than a 24 hour period. Steve, do not give up. These babies need you to "fix" them. Please read pages 49- 60 in the Wild Mammal Babies. That will be your guide to re-hydration and then the transition to formula. You have already hydrated enough so start with the transition to formula. The charts on re-hydrating will help you. Remember you are giving the babies formula plus replacement fluid plus daily maintenance fluid for three days only. (Maybe 4 days if needed) By this time the hydration in the formula should be all they need to keep hydrated. If you think they need a little extra fluid you can always give an extra feeding of water or watered down juice in between their regular feedings. You may need to use sub-q and oral methods because you should not give these babies more then 5% of their body weight in formula/fluids at any one feeding. As you know, feeding too much will cause over-feeding diarrhea. That is the last thing we need now.
Also, it is my personal opinion that this little one does not have edema (fluid build up) from the re-hydration fluid or too much salt. I am thinking this is a dislocation or break of the shoulder/or clavicle bone. The swelling looks to me more like swelling from dislocation or break. I would definitely give Ibuprofen or Metacam. I think that there is most likely a spinal issue /break with the way the legs hang. Definitely give something for pain and swelling.
Bless you, Steve.... your babies need you to help them... you can do this. :Love_Icon

Hey Steve,
I am in complete agreement with UDoWhat. When I first saw the baby I noticed that the edema was on opposite sides, so I knew that it wasn't dependent or positional edema. So, by simply ruling that out, you know there is a much more significant incident occurring.
I would definitely give something for pain, to the poor little bub.
And don't you let me hear you speaking of "passing your syringe". That is unthinkable and not acceptable. Period. You do way too much good, to even start thinking that way.
And goodness, I cannot imagine how hard it is for you trying to work with these wee ones, with your eyesight still compromised. You earn some angel suspenders, for that alone!:grin3
How many times have we each had a little one, that we have wondered "where do I even start, on this poor little thing?" Being doubtful that it would even survive the hydration process. All any of us can do, is to give it our best, and sometimes, that is just not enough. But, at least the little one was safe and warm and loved.
You have an enormous heart, and you have sooo many animal friends that depend on you. I am always excited when I see you post, anxious to see what is going on in your world. Please don't ever deprive us of that.:Love_Icon:grouphug:Love_Icon

Not at ALL Steve! :nono
You are one of the most caring, attentive rehabbers around!
You should never pass your syringes on to anyone, they would never
come close to what you are doing!!!!!!!!!
I am so sorry you are having such issues with your eyes. I do remember reading
a while back about it. Seems like it was one thing after another! :shakehead
Steve, if you ever have questions, type them up fast on the board.
You will get replies, but we know how limited your time is, so you
DON'T have to respond to all of the posts.
:hug

I, too, am sorry about your eyes! I've heard about similar ailments too much for comfort. My dad, mom and uncle went through retinal tears/detachments, and since there's a genetic component I'm almost waiting for it to happen to me.
Don't give up!
Hi Kris S
Thanks
I hope and pray the eye troubles skip you.
The doctors said I have too long of eyes... so the retinal detaches easy.
They caught my sister before hers tore to much.

Hi Friends
I do not have much time at all today ...sorry.
Thanks so much everone for all the information and Kind sayings. :grouphug
I named the Little black male baby " Cody "
and the little gray female " Kimmy "
I picked up more supplies last friday afternoon at Walmart
By the time I got them home Cody was Flat.
His large swelled body flatten out flat to the container.
very strange I never seen before.
I started rotating him to his back then belly every hour or so. ..this helped.
His legs and arm got double size.
I gave him sugar water and got him on the formula good.
I kept trying to make him pee and poop as much as he could.
He did.
The swelling started going down saturday afternoon
I been watching a light white ring around a back paw for a couple of days.
I been wondering if it was broke...It was hard to tell from all the swelling.
but now the swelling was going down....now the little white ring on the leg was turning green and his foot or paw was shriveling up..this is bad...looks like gang green and the paw is dying.
I looked at the leg above the white green ring and i see the broken bone inside
and he was in pain..his head was going back and forth.
he has one front leg that worked...all his other legs did not move.
he scratched a good size sore on his chest with that one leg.....not good..he was hurting him self from pain.
I am so sorry little one.........I had to let you go....I will meet you at the Rainbow Bridge..Love you :Love_Icon

I did not post earlier because you already had the "A" team giving you advice. It is clear to me that Cody was grievously injured and really had no chance even with someone as experienced and caring as you.:grouphug
Steve, you inspire me with your gentle, insightful and straight forward manner. Cody was blessed to be in your hands for care.
Gods Speed little Cody.
