I got a couple of new babies in today who are just about 5 weeks as they are opening eyes. I am getting 2 more siblings shortly. One of the two I have has a very crusty ear. It is like it is stopped up with a scab or something. I guess I will soak it with wet cotton, but I am concerned about what it might be. It is still very cool here so maggots seem unlikely, but not impossible. Also, his rectum had a block of stool in it that I soaked off, but the area around it is now very swollen and the only thing that comes out of it is a clear liquid as well as a yellow glop. I am a little worried about this little guy... Any thoughts?

I'd wait until you can clear the ear before any real concern that may be unnecessary, could be something as "simple" as a scratch. You'll know better once it's cleared. As for his little bum, maybe some Ib to help reduce swelling?
If he's been clogged for awhile it may take some hydration to get things moving again.

If possible, Gayle, I would keep gloopy-butt separate for a little while, just in case that yellow glop was coccidia. You don't need the rest of them getting it.

I am beginning to think it may be worms. I now see some odd discharge on one of the others. They are littermates so likely all will have whatever one of them has. I do have them together. I got 4 who were littermates by the end of the day. :eek

Mites are another possibility. Infestation is often in the ears.

I am pretty sure that the ear is a scab from a falling out of the tree injury. I used Revolution in case it was mites and because there were fleas.
Thank-you for the thoughts guys... We will see what tomorrow brings. His poor little bottom looks so sore! I soaked it and got more yuck out of it and then put some Neosporin on it to try to keep it from sealing up and also to help if there is any infection. I started SMZ/TMP as I am concerned that it might be infected and SMZ is so mild on the tummy.

Well, he is still hanging on...I finally put him into the incubator. He was on me for hours. He stayed with me for feeding everyone else and ate a tiny bit himself as well as a bit of molasses water for hydration.
However, sadly, we lost his sister. She was very neuro and I was worried abut her too, but he seemed more immediate. He wasn't...:sad She will be buried tomorrow morning, hopefully alone. This little guy is by no means out of the woods. The whole litter is just in such rough shape. They were without mom for a few days from the look of them and fell from 25 feet to the ground from their nest in a pine tree where they were unreachable.
What a sad situation...thank-you for the prayers and good thoughts.:Love_Icon

I'm sorry to hear about his little sister.:sadness
She's a precious little angel now.

BUT I am so happy this little bundle of joy stayed with you the whole time.
I guarantee that regardless of what happens, he was enjoying every minute with you! :hug

Here he is, Nancy...I figured it out...:grin3
Ken with the big babies. He holds them after I feed so as to help me keep them straight. He was actually holding the little girl when she passed so she was not alone. I gave them both cipro, but it was just not enough. He is clicking like I have never heard before. I have steamed and held upright and everything else I could think of. It is God's hands now. :Love_Icon

He's right where he belongs Gayle. And look at Ken as well.
Such love for these little lost souls. You both are just so caring and compassionate,
I'm glad they found their way to you. :hug:Love_Icon:hug
