View Full Version : Formula Question?

Would it be safe to freeze reconstituted formula?
:dono
I was thinking it might be a time saver if I could mix up several days worth and freeze small portions, like just enough for one feed.
I'm using a 50/50 mix of Esbilac & Fox Valley 20/50, so I would combine the two before freezing.

Surely this has come up before... Could this be a common practice that I've somehow missed? Or are there reasons this shouldn't be done?
IF freezing is safe, I would use sealed individual containers, such as those used for freezing baby food, or even human breast milk freezer bags.

Anyone with any experience doing this?

Oh... and I would also let the reconstituted liquid sit in the fridge overnight before freezing...
(I just gave this advice to someone else, DUH...):embar

This is exactly what I do. I make up tons of little batches and stick them all in the freezer.
I use these to store them in.
These hold 1/2 cup, made by Rubbermaid.:thumbsup

I do the same thing-- mix up about 64 oz of formula and pour into cups that will last about 1 day. Then I stack them in the freezer.
I bought small containers from Amazon that are meant for freezing baby food. They came in a package of 12.
If I forget to defrost one in the fridge the night before, I just pop the little cup into a larger cup of hot water to defrost. (Just like you would for human breast milk.)
Then I warm the milk in a bottle warmer.
Another trick to save time-- leave your bottles (syringes/ nipples) in the milk between feedings, in the fridge. Then just wash them once a day so they're ready for the next batch of milk.
:thumbsup

The plus for me is my containers are made to fit in the bottle warmer, unlike the Rubbermaid, but any freezer safe container would work. Just remember to leave some room at the top for expansion!
