he bit his penis!

I posted in Grady's thread but figure I need to post here too. He bit his penis sometime this evening. I'm giving him some Tramadol. It's gotta be painful. Should I give him prednisone or something else? If it swells he won't be able to urinate. I haven't tried examining it--don't know if I really can. Squirrel man parts are relatively long. We see the sheath and maybe the tip. There's no way to look at the length without stimulating him and I bet that would be really agonizing for him. Has anyone seen this sort of thing

Oh that poor boy...:shakehead I am not sure, but you can use Tramadol and Meticam alternately if I am not mistaken. Not sure I would give pred because it might not help if he is borderline infection because of suppressing the immune system.

Grady weighs (very roughly as he is NOT cooperative) 456 grams. He is PISSED! I don't have a wrist wrap so have stabilized his body with surgical wrap (like vet wrap but softer). I do NOT want him getting at his parts again.

I can't remember, was he going on his own or were you having to stimulate him to urinate before this injury? It's possible he may have had a UTI starting and pain might have caused him to bite at it. Then again we're not sure of his level of sensation in that area, so if he has that 'disconnected body part' feeling that Donnie describes, it could've been accidental.

Is cold therapy something that can be done with squirrels? Obviously nothing like ice packs...:facepalm
A good natural remedy I've personally used for severe mastitis is refrigerated green cabbage leaves. They hold a cool temp for a while and the smooth texture is soothing. I wonder if using something like that -- particularly before he needs to be stimulated -- would be any help?

Thanks guys. Makes me sad that he may need to wear a vest the rest of his life. Makes me sadder he may savage his own parts on a regular basis. I bet it was accidental. His "excitement" factor has been going up since he got his testicles (well DUH!) he gets a boner when stimulated and I shield his chompers from his parts. I think the injury is a result of that response to something when he was moving around. He did what I shield him from when stimulating. It looks tons better this morning but I need to get him to the vet. I guess he could be neutered but being neutered won't necessarially solve the chompers to penis distance. CL does Grady have any issues like paralysis? I can't remember but I didn't think so. CC chewed I believe B/C of that, however something else may be going on with Grady....was he peeing all along? If not he may have been trying to get himself to pee :dono
CC penis would get so raw, I only used triple antibiotic on him, I used many things including warm wet cotton balls, the remedies went on and on most of his life. The only way I could keep him from chewing was to have him wear the CC vest...I will have to find that thread and will put it here, maybe you could make one. I can help you if you decide to go that route :thumbsup
I (because of CC's paralyses) used to stimulate him daily/several times a day) I hope that won't be your situation.
Could he have a crystal/stone? I would say only a vet could know that in an xray.....

He may not need a vest forever, just so this (whatever happened) heals :thumbsup

Holy moly, that penis bite doesn't look good. I have been lurking in Grady's thread since the start. I am so sorry to here that this happened. Especially after the progress he has made. Prayers for a quick recovery.

Just got back from vet and gotta go with hubby to HIS vet. So there is some soft tissue damage to the sheath and maybe the very end but nothing serious that's obvious. He has three doses of Metacam and Baytril to make sure there's no infection. He chomped Dr. F pretty good--guess I owe him a box of bandaids. Thought is he may be regaining sensation--just a guess. I will go get a wrist wrap at Walgrens today. For now he's swaddled in vet wrap to keep him from jack knifing and doing it again AND he has a loincloth of fleece for extra protection. Abby I will be talking to you at your convenience. Just wanted to let everybody know Grady is back, medicated and has eaten some. Haven't pottied him but may try to express his bladder later. Gonna let the poor boy rest for awhile. He's had a hard day. Thank you all for your love, concern and prayers. :Love_Icon

I'll give him lovins for everybody. His penis looks lots better but poor little man can't move much with the vey wrap. Tonight I'll give him a loincloth that's less restrictive but won't let him get to his parts. If it IS sensation coming back I guess I ned to be VERY careful of self mutilation. It'd be great if one day he could scoot around like Sweeper's Poppy.

Thanks darlin. He's pretty zonked out right now. I just gave him some yogurt and he peed some so for tonight I'm happy. He gets two more days of Metacam--pretty hefty doses. Maybe that's why he's zonked!

Hi Abby! Grady is lots better. About 1:00 he'll get the second dose of Metacam. I'll make sure he eats something before as he's gonna be a fruit loop for the rest of the day. Check out his thread-- he got a present in the mail--his first ever cube--from Nancy. He's in there belly down and that's good as he can't get to his penis. It's still some swollen but not red and angry looking anymore and he peed this morning --lots. Urine is way too concentrated. He just didn't drink much yesterday. I may just subQ him today. Don't want him to dehydrate. I cut his loincloth off this morning and he's lots more comfortable. He ate some and had some formula so I think today is a muuuuuuch better day for him than yesterday.
