View Full Version : 2 little Pinkies 5-10 days old!!

Hello everyone! On March 29th I found 3 pinkies on the ground freezing. I took them inside while I got something to warm them but immediately when I got inside one of them passed away. I got them a warm water bottle and set them outside where I found them and waited for momma to come get them, unfortunately she never did after 48 hours.
The two I still have I believe are doing well, once they were warmed up (slowly of course) and then rehydrated with pedialyte. After that I have been feeding them the new esbilac and heavy cream at a ratio of 1 part esbilac, 1/4 part cream.
At first they wouldnt move much but now they flop all over the place, they are also peeing and pooping well.
One of my concerns is that they arent too enthusiastic about their formula... they will not try to suckle it at all. I am feeding them about 0.5CC every 2.5-3 hours.
I just weighed them today and they are both 17grams. I feel like that is too small no? They have a bit of fuzz on their head but it is mainly just on their nose.
They are a little battered from the fall out of the tree but the bruising look as if they are slowly disappearing.
I have attached three photos, the one with the syringe in the background is from 3 days ago and then the other ones are from yesterday.
I think they are too skinny but I know nothing of pinkies other than what I have read here, I sure am learning lots!!

hi Manda! We're very glad you found us!
Your pinkies actually look OK....nowhere near as skinny or dehydrated as some that I've seen. Good job so far :). The amount they are taking in, for their weight, is right in line with the 5-7% of body weight guideline, so :thumbsup.
I love pinkies and usually have a bunch each year. Often they are NOT enthusiastic suckers at first; in fact, they need you to drip-drip the formula into their little mouths. Here are a few things to try:
*make sure the formula is VERY warm. Mamma squirrel's body is 100-102 degrees and so is her milk....pinkies don't relate to food that isn't almost hot
*make sure the pinky is warm while you're feeding. Keep a small piece of fleece or cloth on the heating pad along with their container and use it each time to wrap the baby while feeding.
*If you have long enough hair, hold the pinky wrapped in your hair for a few moments and humm. Yes, humm or purr like a cat. The feeling of your "fur" and the humming suggests to the little pink that mamma is near, and you'll be amazed how enthusiastic they get about eating all of a sudden.
You're doing great -- please keep us updated and ask ANY questions!
BTW, I see you're in the UK....is it possible that these little ones are red squirrels?

Thank you IR,
Thank you for everything in your post. I am actually not in the UK, my brother in law made my account for me as I was at work and he is from England and it totally slipped his mind.
I have super long hair so I will definitely try that!
I saw their momma (she had evidence of teets that have been nursed on) as she looked at them and ran away to never come back again and she was a black eastern squirrel.
So the babies are one of each sex, a boy and a girl. My girl has a cut on her genitals ever since I got her, she can still pee but I feel bad for her because it must hurt.

Thank you for saving these two, they do look good. So sorry about the other sibling. :(
Do you have the babies on heat? We recommend a no shut off heating pad half under container, half so they can move off if get too warm.
They also like to borrow for comfort, pieces of fleece laid over them, t-shirt, or sheet type material. No towels or anything with loops they can get their wee toes caught in.
How is their "output" are you stimulating after each feeding?
Edit: For baby's cut you can apply an antibiotic ointment like neosporin.

I am moving this thread up to the non emergency section.
It will get more attention, and if you need help, people will be more apt to see it.
We will move it later when things are stabilized, ok? :hug

Yes they have a heating bad under half their nest. I am also stimulating them after each feeding.
As for the neosporin, it is safe to put it right on the genitals?

So about a half hour after their feeding at 12 the female all of a sudden started squawking and thrashing around. I put her in my hair to try and calm her down but it only worked for a good 5 minutes. She finally started to sleep a bit but every minute or two does the same thing for a good minute and then goes back to sleep. Her milk line is at the normal spot it is after a feeding so it is not food related and she is nice and warm so not that either. I stimulated her and she had a good poop and pee.
What is wrong with her? I am worried, she will not shut her mouth properly either but is not open mouth breathing, it is just slightly open

Well then you have us to help! For now, be sure they are warm all of the time and hydrated. You know 5-7% for feeding amount. Remember warm for them is mama who has a body temp of about 102 so what feels warm to us sometimes needs to be just a bit warmer for them.

The screaming pinky thing does happen once in awhile and it will take years off your life. Usually they do it at 2-3:00am :eek Long as she is eating, peeing and pooping she should be ok....just missing her mamma.

So my little girl is still sleeping with her mouth open and isnt very active. She never was the very active one as i think she has an injured elbow from the fall from the tree but it is hard to tell. Anyway, I am now over the top even more worried as she has started making clicking noises in her sleep... she has never aspirated for me though... :'(

Is she clicking with each breath inhale and exhale?
Just because you didn't see her aspirate does not mean she couldn't have.
She does appear as though she struggles to breathe.
Do you have any anti biotics?

She appears to have struggles breathing and is very lethargic. The clicking is not consistent.
Could she be doing this because of pain? She hardly ever moves her front left arm. When i try and stretch it there is resistance and I do not want to hurt it more to try and see how far stretched it can go.. i do not want to hurt her.
Only antbiotics I can get tomorrow would be clavamox

That arm definitely doesn't look right. Are you able to VERY gently massage it and see what reaction you get from her -- will she relax it, or flinch, or...? I wonder if a tiny bit of ibuprophen might help her for pain...do we have a weight on this little one?

She will curl up into a ball if i gentle massage it. Both her and her brother have both lost weight considerably since yesterday morning. They were 0.6 ounces (17 g) yesterday and are now 0.5 ounces (14g). I am failing them.

I believe your little girl is in critical condition. The undigested formula is a BIG problem. The breathing is another BIG problem. She has to have antibiotics today or she won't make it. I have no experience with pinkies so I'm not sure what is the right answer regarding the milk line. Definitely don't give more formula until that moves.
First, I would find antibiotics. That is critical. Second, I would take a damp warm gauze or Q-tip or anything and try to stimulate her to poop.
Hopefully someone experienced in pinkies will be on soon.

Is there a chance you might have a single cipro or other type abx, you may know someone you can call, they are widely prescribed and almost everyone has an extra left over from a prescription. Is there a tropical fish store near you, they carry fishflox which can be used.

Yes, that's true. Do you have any left over antibiotics? Maybe a family member? All you need is one pill ... preferably Ciprofloxacin but others will work also.
I am very concerned about that milk line also. I think I would gently stroke her body with something warm to stimulate her .. sorta wake her up. The formula in her tummy needs to move desperately. Will she take a drop of water? Maybe sweeten it with a little apple juice.

We can work on dosing while you get it.
To be honest with you I am very concerned because your baby has TWO life threatening problems. Bloat kills ... so does pneumonia. So I'm not sure if putting Baytril in that bloated tummy will work in time. To be effective it has to be absorbed and I'm not sure that's happening in this baby girl.
I guess it's a long shot but worth a try.

A teaspoon of sugar in a cup of warm water. 8 hours!!! :eek
Has that happened before?
For larger bloated babies, the recommendation is to float their body in a bowl of warm water to their arm pits. The warmth of the water will relax the muscles and hopefully help the digestive tract to start moving. Again, I'm have no pinkie experience so I don't know if this would apply to pinkies.
The reason I think pneumonia is because the baby is using so much effort to breath. You can see the baby open mouth breathing with great effort. Also, you did mention clicking, right?

The esbilac powder with the pre and probiotics. They were also on heavy cream but i someone said it isnt too good for pinkies so i stopped a couple days ago. They are getting one part esbilac, two parts water and eating 0.5cc every 2.5-3 hours or less if their milk line went down before then (which it usually doesnt).

Do you let the Esbilac sit overnight.
Make up some now, and let it sit in the refrig for at least 6-7 hours.
We have to get the bloat down before feeding anything by mouth.
Did you give gas X? (Simethicone)
Did you do the soaks in WARM water? If so, please remember to dry them
off really well. They can not regulate their body temp and we do not want them
getting cold. I sometimes put my fleece I the dryer when I have to wet a baby,
then I change out the fleece so it's always toasty warm for about 15 minutes after
they are completely dry.

According to the Bayer site, enrofloxacin (Baytril) comes in 22.7, 68, and 136mg tablets. I'm very confused about the 15mg tablet. Could you double check that? I would think that if a 15mg tablet is available the company would have it on their site. IDK, are there generic forms of Baytril? Don't know the answer to that.

Manda, was her head always dark like that, or is it the camera?
Tell me if I have the timeline straight: You brought them home, and both were doing well -- eating, pooping, peeing.
Then the little girl had the screaming incident -- twice, I think -- and her troubles started after that? Did the open mouth breathing begin after that?
I am just wondering if she did sustain head trauma when she fell (or from the tree cutter's blade) and if what you heard was not just a screamy pinky but a real seizure due to injury to her head. If she suffered a brain bleed and is now neurologically damaged, that would explain the gasping, lethargy, and general decline. I am sorry if this is a very sad scenario, but ........?

I am just wondering if she did sustain head trauma when she fell (or from the tree cutter's blade) and if what you heard was not just a screamy pinky but a real seizure due to injury to her head. If she suffered a brain bleed and is now neurologically damaged, that would explain the gasping, lethargy, and general decline. I am sorry if this is a very sad scenario, but ........?
Hey ok so the babies are now with 'Squirrelfriend' (Wendy) and she is going to take good care of them. The girl's bloat has gotten worse and yes we believe she probably has a head injury... hopefully she gets better. I know the have the best possible person caring for them right now in my area.

She's got a lot of bruising on her head and side. Mouth stays open all the time. Clicks with every breath. Still has a milk line. Bloat. Something it up with the arm or shoulder. The scratch on the genitals is not a big concern at this time. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected.

Nancy,
mo is from Montreal. She was named Mo by the finders. It was November and she was found with a bloody mustache. Movember = Mo. She was supposed to be released but she seems to be epileptic. She has seizures on and lmost daily basis. I think it is from her head injury. I was treating her for possible mbd for a year to no avail. If it was mbd seizures she would have been dead long ago. I've had her for about three years now. She was an adult wild. She's pretty tame now. She sleeps with us at bed time as does Squirrelie. I put the baby with her when she is already asleep. I don't think she even knows it's there. I don't leave them together unsupervised. Maybe when he's older. He's too fragile right now.

I don't know if there's a chart, I actually think I saw one once.
Everyone is so different, the chart can be worrisome if your little one isn't in the guidelines.
As long as they are NOT losing weight daily, that's the goal. When they get a little bit older it
will be typical for them to gain 4-7 grams daily, but you aren't even close to that age yet.
Slow and steady, and as long as he is getting 5-7% of his body weight you are doing perfect.
I'm SO glad he made his way to YOU! :Love_Icon
Awe, sweet Mo. Has she ever been awake with the baby in with her?
squirrelfriend
04-08-2015, 11:14 AM
Yeah mo has been awake when he's lying beside her. She doesn't seem to notice. Mo is not an aggressive squirrel just like mr Tilty was.
As for the weight I figured as long as he wasn't losing weight he was doing ok. The youngest I've had before was three weekers. I swear when she first showed me this one I thought it was a rat pup until I saw the face. He is just soooo small!

Has he aspirated that you know of?
Lots of times these little ones do make noises and it's difficult to tell the difference.
If this comes and goes and is NOT with every breath, I think he fine, unless he has
aspirated, then we should be concerned (perhaps).
You have Baytril, correct? And dosing instructions, just in case?

Wee man is 21g now. I think he is under weight. I feed him constantly. He only eats a little at a time so I have to make up for it with frequency. His breathing has been a little laboured. No gaping mouth at all. I'm just going by the way his ribs move as he breathes. He's very energetic. Constantly squirming. Even in his sleep. Here is a video that illustrates it. Hopefully it loads up. I've never posted a video before.

:)There needs to be more discussion/research on tangible ways to protect these Lil' Ones like Mo, and several other's from reoccurring sores related to their disabilities. There are so many materials to develop different prosthesis from, that when heated become malleable. :great
:)There is Super Glue (cyanoacrylte) which is formulated for medical use, and several brands made specifically for veterinarian use, Vet use-Surgi-lock, Nexabond, VetGlue and LiquiVet. Certainly a few well placed drops of one of these glues can be utilized to hold splints, and other bandages in place when necessary. :thumbsup
:)Wounds themselves need to be left open to heal in most cases, although wouldn't it be possible to adhere a wrist wrap in place around the mid section of a Squirrel to limit them from re injuring themselves. And in Lil' Mo's case, after her recent irritation heals, wouldn't it be great to cover the vulnerable area with a thin piece of breathable prosthetic 'plastic' using a few non irritating drops of glue. Something of this nature would prevent additional sores from forming, considering she (and so many others) have to drag one or both limbs.:Love_Icon
:)Sorry for the :threadjack squirrelfriend, I'm sure something can be devised to prevent further irritation to Lil' Mo's leg, and she is doing such a wonderful job helping you.:grouphug

Thanks Annabella's papa. That is very interesting. I didn't know there was a superglue for that. Do you only use it to adhere a bandage or to close a wound? Can you drip it onto a scab to toughen it?
i have used casts on her leg many times. They don't last very long. She's good at getting out of them. Her leg usually doesn't look that bad. This is as bad as it ever gets. It all depends on how active she is. If she's really hyper for a day or two then it gets like this.

:)Hi squirrelfriend, I'm only learning about medical grade super glue myself, apparently regular super glue can heat up on the skin causing irritation. However, Vetbond and Dermabond (For human use) have a different composition and are more pliable, yet neither of these are the same as Liquid Bandages which I don't think would have the same adhesive value.
:)An idea that may be worth a try, (through trial and error) would be placing a breathable (perforated) piece of medical grade plastic similar to the 14.00 plastic eye guard below, over Mo's sore leg after it heals. Instead of tape or self adhesive gauze, perhaps securing it directly to her fur with 3 or 4 drops of Vetbond, the adhesive itself sloughs away on it's own in a few days.
:)A few drops of the adhesive could also be used to keep a wrist band in place, when it is used around the torso of a Squirrel to limit movement, in the prevention of self mutilation or suckling.
:)There are so many other Squirrels with paralysis in both legs, that I'm not sure what could be done for as of yet. However if Lil' Mo had something that would act as a 'skid plate' on her leg, it could help prevent future abrasions.
