View Full Version : Clicking or paranoia???

I have a listen after every feed, hold each girl up to my ear in a quiet room. I THOUGHT I heard clicks from Maddy, but it wasn't very clear or dramatic. I'm familiar with her teeth clicks & snuffling noises, but this WAS a little different. Didn't sound like every breath, but maybe every 2nd or 3rd. I've never seen bubbles from her nose but she is a very enthusiastic eater. Even so, I always try not to let her go too fast. The quickest a 1cc syringe would take is probably 2 or 3 minutes...
Is this possibly early stages of pneumonia, or is paranoia getting the better of me?
I've had her 7 days, she's eating, pooping, & peeing well, and gained 14grams. Approx 4wks old and weighs 85grams.
I have SMZ-TMP liquid (I think is 200/40 per 5ml but need to double check) and also a cipro 500mg tab

My vote is paranoia...:grin3 Of course, this is me and I once took an entire litter of 5 pinkies in thinking they were all clicking. The vet was like "Get these perfectly healthy little squirrels out of here, Gayle!". Is she acting the same? Active and alert?

Yes she's acting the same as always.
Very possible this is just the worried squammy syndrome.
I keep going back to a thread (just re-read) pneumonia & the phantom click

I'll definitely be investing in a stethoscope:tilt because I don't exactly trust my hearing... too much loud music back in the day:grin3
Poor kids probably not gonna get any rest now because I'm gonna be in there listening to her every hour now:embar

They are a little old to just get it without visible signs, but being vigilant is good!:thumbsup

Thank you so much Gayle for ALL your reassurances this past week! Ever since I discovered 'squirrel love' I knew this was something I wanted to do with my life. I've studied & read & reread tons of threads, and I think I've got a good bit of the technical knowledge down, but it's a world of difference from theory to application! Now I'm learning the real-world angle, and all the little nerve wracking worries that go along with it!:grouphug
My first baby, Cassie, was abnormally easy, lol, a truly perfect 'starter squirrel', and Sly was a stable 8wk kid when he came, so these two littles are alot different! But dang I love the little buggers...

I still worry even after ALL THESE YEARS. :shakehead
I think once you get complacent, you should stop rehabbing.
I love that you're a worrier! Oh and I mean that in the most complementary way, promise.:hug
Anyway, I remembered a great thread about aspiration pneumonia that HRT4SQRLS started, it's a
great way to hear the clicking, something she discovered by mistake, but it's perfect!

Well I managed to occupy myself with getting my daughter ready for bed... kept me from sitting obsessively with a squirrel up to my ear:embar
When I went and got her back out just now, I'm happy to report I DID NOT hear that particular noise again:serene
I'm thinking that what I heard before might've been where she still had a little formula (or saliva) in her mouth or something like that. :dono
Don't think for a minute though that I won't still be listening & watching carefully... noises, appetite, activity, & any changes in where she sleeps in relation to her heating pad:great
And let me say, it sure feels good to know y'all are here:grouphug I know TSB's got my back:grin3

Oh, don't you worry...you will be reassuring me as soon as I have little ones to "hold up to my ear like a phone". This is what I tell newbies to do...:rofl4 I find it to be quite effective! I can calmly tell you not to worry and make light of your concerns, but just wait until I have a 15g pinkie to freak out about...:rofl4
I know just what you mean about being in it for the long haul. They got me in the moment that Sammy wouldn't stay by the tree I tried to return him to, but followed me instead. :shakehead:Love_Icon

Yeah, I'll never forget watching Cassie walking towards me that day as I was raking. She was so weak & pitiful, she was forced to walk so slowly, staggering a bit, but she had such a determination... she knew EXACTLY where she was headed, which was to me for help. I was changed that very day:Love_Icon:Squirrel:Love_Icon

Oh how I tried not to fall in love. Ken brought me out to see him when he found him on the sidewalk. Actually he tried to climb Ken's leg. I was NOT keeping him. I WAS reuniting him with mama. I WAS finding a rehabber... Yeah right! It was at least a week into it and I was still calling him :the baby squirrel" when Ken came down to breakfast one morning while I was feeding the "baby squirrel" and said "You know his name is Sammy, right?". It was all over...he had a name and he was part of the family...:shakehead I do remind Ken that it all started with him when he gripes about the "babies" that he reminds me are NOT babies anymore.
They are like no other living thing... I wouldn't trade the privilege of caring for them for all the money in the world!:Love_Icon
Sorry for the thread jack!!!:Love_Icon

RobinTN, you're a natural at this and you've got the best of TSB at your back :grin2.
Seriously, you ARE wise to be vigilant and just a little bit paranoid because sometimes pneumonia will come on to an older baby without the classic 'clicking'. Always take lack of appetite and lack of holding body heat VERY seriously...I once had a 7-week-old get pneumonia because I took her off the heating pad too early, and since she was in with 4 siblings I damn near missed it.

Older? Well not a pinkie, but she's about 4 weeks old.
And I heard it again. Once, in two listens (holding her chest against my ear) First time I listened right after her feed & nothing, but then about 30 minutes later after I finished her sister I got her back out and that time I heard it.
Her appetite was off by a half to one cc, usually eating 5-5.5cc, but she was ready to go back to sleep at 4.5 -- that's still in her 5-7% range, and I know for a fact she's full to the brim bc it was coming out the back as it was going in the front.
So... I'm not exactly in panic mode, but I am still concerned. There ARE rationalizations -- not hearing it every time, a full belly...
I'll be laying down for a few hours, but I'll be checking her when I get up, before our morning gets going. However, I won't be able to get back on here until after I get my daughter to school, about 8:30
