Squirrels like to bury foods and can then unearth them weeks later.
Korean Yams for example get extremely hard, dry and discolored.
Are they safe to eat then?
Molds or poison dangers in old fossilized foods.
Carrots, beans and of course HHBs are buried.
How serious an issue ?

I throw out all dried out vegetables and fruits each morning when I replace them.

Are they dangerous ?
Nibblers seem to like nibbling on old Korean Yams in particular.
Those which would make great door stops, and hockey pucks.

Yes, I've actually cut myself on the corner of a piece of petrified Korean yam! I don't know if they are necessarily dangerous but I throw them out.
