I'm new to the Squirrel Board. I need help with my 7month old baby girl Hope, I've raised her from about two weeks old. I need to find someone in the Southeast Michigan area who is willing to exam and treat her, she has malocclusion her bottom teeth need trimming, but I'm most concerned about her top teeth they are bent to the side and growing back,I'm afraid they will start growing into the roof of her mouth. I don't want her to die because of her teeth, I Love her so very much! I'm worried about calling any vets,I'm afraid someone will take her away from me,I would be heartbroken. I want to do everything I can to help her. I'm sure she would need to be given something to make her sleep to do the trimming, I've tried but can't get her to hold still long enough, and I'm afraid of cutting her on accident.I'm so stressed out about this. Please if anyone could help me, I would be forever grateful. We need help a.s.a.p. Thanks for listening, hope to hear from someone soon. Barbara

Hi Barbra, you can stop stressing now. We will find help for your girl. You must be new to the board. We are a bunch of squirrel loving folks, and most are in the same position as you, having a squirrel in an illegal state.
You need not worry, no one from this board would send you to someone who would take your squirrel. We have squirrels, and I can tell you that I would give up a breast, before I would give up my little fuzzer!
So, stop stressing. We have members all over the world, and will be able to find you some safe help. You may have to travel a bit, but that will be worked out by administrators when they come on the board in the next few hours.
:Welcome we are glad you found us. There is a wealth of knowledge here about squirrels. You will find information to keep your little fuzzer healthy and happy.
We love pictures, and we especially need to see some close-ups of your girls teeth, so we will know what we are dealing with. We will be asking you all kinds of questions about your squirrel, but that is so we can assess her over all health.
So, please answer our questions as completely as possible. The more information we have about your little fuzzbutt, the better we can help you.
So, we need pictures of her mouth.
Tell us all about her, where you got her, how long have you had her? If you have had her since a pinkie or baby, what type formula you fed her?
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Tell us what her diet is. We need to know what you are feeding her daily? How many and what kind of nuts? How often is she getting nuts.? You will discover here, that proper diet is tantamount to a healthy squirrel.
Have her teeth ever been trimmed before?
It sounds like you do not have access to vet care. We do have a list of vets that are willing to treat squirrels, so they will look and see if there is one close to you.
So, sweetie, answer these questions, and get some pictures of her teeth posted, and by morning many more folks will be on the noard, and we will see about getti.g your girl fixed up!

My red squirrel has a similar problem. He is about 9 months old. We have to trim Peanut's teeth every two weeks. It was very hard to do the trimming because our red wouldn't hold still either; we have no vet here that can treat exotics. What we did is that I held Peanut's head as still as I could while my wife did the clipping. And it was hard. Each time took quite a while. We also were fearful of hurting the squirrel and, at one point, one tooth was clipped too short. As time went by Peanut has adjusted and now the trimming takes place quite quickly with very little fussing from Peanut. If your squirrel is like mine the trimming will need to be done often. Get help and learn how. Having a veterinarian do the trimming could be costly and certainly a strain on the squirrel. Good luck.

Here are pictures from when I first got her to now. I will post pictures of her teeth later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You So Much! Barbara
I've had her since she was a baby, about 2 weeks old. My husband found her laying on the shop floor at his work. I have fed her Esbilac puppy formula since I've had her. She eats fruits, veggies and nuts. She seems quite healthy except for her teeth. I have been able to trim a bit off her bottom teeth, but not enough. Most concerned about the top teeth right now. Hope I can get help for her real soon. I've only tried myself, might have to get my husband or daughter to help me with her, she's mostly used to being around me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Barbara

Hi Purple,
I know you're worried about your baby; I would be too! It looks like she has grown into a beautiful girl! :Love_Icon Did you get her this past fall? What formula did you raise her on? What does she eat now? It's astounding how many physical and psychological issues can be linked to a squirrel's diet. The folks here are incredibly knowledgeable, and I know they will help in any way they can. :grouphug :thumbsup

Hi purple, welcome to TSB! That is a beautiful fox squirrel girl you have there!
What part of Michigan are you in? I have one excellent contact in your state but not sure if she's near you or not. If you feel squeamish about putting it here on the Board, just send me a Private Message.

When I call the Vet, do I say the Squirrel Board referred me or the Rehabbers name? Should I just ask if they will exam and treat my squirrel? Thank you, Barbara

Use the rehabbers name. Tell them that your squirrel is mallocluded and needs to have her teeth trimmed ASAP.

As was stated, those teeth need to be trimmed ASAP. The basic alignment does not look too bad so there is a chance that her teeth will correct after they are trimmed and wear correctly in the future. There is however, a chance that they will need repeat trimmings. If that is the case, you can learn how to do this from the TSB. We can help you to select good quality clippers and provide directions for how to correctly trim her teeth. She is very cute and has a great coat!:)

I have to trim one of my squees teeth, almost every 2 weeks. And, I know I am not the only one who has to do it.
I don't think anybody likes it, but it MUSTbe done. Your girl will feel so much better. Mines teeth are actually growing out at almost opposite angles, and it stretches her jaw in 2 different angles. I can tell when they are starting to bother her, her attitude changes, I can tell she is hurting. So, I give her some advil, for the discomfort.
Often I can "sneak" clip her. She is handicapped. But, she knows when the clippers come out, and she screams and fights and carries on! But, when she is real sleepy, after I feed her formula, I dip my clippers in warm water, so she doesn't feel the cold, and I kind of play with her mouth, to get her mouth/lips in the right position, and then snip!
I can only do the top or the bottom at one time, so I wait a day or two, and then I get the other teeth. She tolerates this sneak approach much better than when she knows its coming.
But your girl really needs them trimmed. Please keep us updated!

I called the Hartrick vet yesterday, the woman I spoke to said they don't usually work with squirrels. I mentioned the rehabbers name and she said they have worked for them before, but she said she would have to ask the Doctor. I left my name and number. No return call yesterday, hoping someone will call today. I'm getting worried.:please
The other vet you listed was Parkway in Macomb , I could only find a Parkway Small Animal & Exotic Hospital in Clinton Twp, Michigan, is that the one?

Well got the bad news, Hartrick Vet called back and said the Doctor DOES NOT trim squirrel teeth, she said they were sorry though.:( I'll try Parkway and see if I have better luck.

I'm so happy and nervous:bliss. I called Parkway Vet and they said they will exam and treat my baby Hope:dance! Now I have to worry about getting her in a carrier and to the office, this will be her first outing and around other people, so this looks like it might be an adventure. We have a 7pm appointment. It's about a 40min. drive from my house. Please wish us luck and say prayers, that everything will go smoothly and work out just fine. Barbara

Some unsolicited advice:
If you can go with your husband or friend and keep the sqeee in the car.
You go in, and see the Doctor.
So when you first walk in, and they ask where is the squirrel, you just say in a controlled but firm manner, she is right outside, I just want to meet the doc for a moment first.
Teeth trimming is not exactly like internal surgery.
If you had to do it you probably could.
It is important that the vet, truly cares about your squirrel.
It is important that she is not just another statistic.
It is important that the vet will give the squirrel back to you.
And will do everything to help it that he can.
I know you are nervous. It is important that you are firm and confident.
There is a commercial on TV about how when patients go to the doctor they get nervous and have no questions to ask. Like they are talking to God.
The vet is a person.
You are a person.
Your squee is like a person to you.
So don't be shy. Your vet should know how important your squirrel is to you.
Ask questions.
Be friendly, appreciative and convey your heart felt emotion.
Your voice, is very important.
It is the only voice your squirrel has !
Great Luck to You and your Squirrel.
Will be waiting to hear how short teeth is doing later.

Great News! Finally got Hope in her carrier last night,no harness, what a wild ride that was. Had to change our appointment for an hour later since I was having such a hard time getting her in the carrier. Hope was just suppose to be going for an exam, but I asked the vet if there was a chance she could have her teeth trimmed while we were there because how badly she needed the work done. Thankfully they had two canceled appointments so they were able to do it:dance! Everything went fine, everybody was really great there, I'm so grateful, they said we could come back for regular trimmings. I want to first thank The Squirrel Board for having this site, as you all know having squirrels, they are amazing animals! Thanks to all the wonderful people on here who are ready to help anyway they can,and to Parkway Vet for understanding and loving animals! I will send updated pictures soon of her dental work,as soon as any soreness goes away. So much stress has been relieved, thanks to everyone. :bliss Barbara

I know this is an old post but wouldn't the vet report the person for having a pet squirrel if you were to take it to the vet?
island rehabber
08-06-2023, 08:27 AM
Some would and some would not. It's very important to find out up front if the vet will treat the squirrel or if he responds with the classic "it is illegal to have Wildlife as pets in this state and I will have to report it."
