Hi All:
Friend found an injured red squirrel in her backyard. He has an open/reddish wound on one hind leg and that is why she was able to catch him. She saw him in her backyard just sitting there and shivering. She has him in the house, in a Cat Carrier and I gave her the usual food and care advice, but we need to get this squee into experienced hands.
I've sent her here to fill you all in, do we have anyone near Rochester Hills, MI?
Thanks,
Kim

Rochester Hills is a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. North by 30 miles. Near to Pontiac, and Palace of Auburn Hills.

I'm Karen and the one with the hurt squirrel. Currently I have him in a cat crate with some nuts and water and a fleece to burrow into. When I last checked he was sleeping ... but I did startle him. Seems to be settled back now. I have him in the mud room at the house ... due to it being extremely cold I'm afraid to put the crate outside but don't want to shock him with warmer air in the house. I've been told that the back leg has been an issue for quite a while ... however, it's in the negative temps here and I was able to walk right up to him so I know he's not in good shape. I appreciate any help.

He is very likely in shock and you could put a heating pad under half of the crate if possible. If you have a safe, secure room away from all animals and people you could bring him in to warm him up. An injury makes it hard for him to hold his body temperature.

You won't hurt him by letting him be warm :) So you are saying others have seen this squirrel around? What is your Vet like? If you called them would they treat him/her? He might be able to give you antibiotics and look over the wound. I don't suppose you have any Metacam or Tramadol on hand do you?
SM - do you think she should put neosporin on it and get him doctored up while he is still docile?
Don't we have any rehabbers or Squirrel Board people near Karen?

Oh and Karen - THANK YOU for doing this. It is so nice and appreciated that you care about this little Squirrel. Thanks for listening to my advice and coming over to the forum.
Lots of people who can help here, it is a Saturday so maybe there haven't been a lot of responses because people are out and about. I also posted on a Wildlife rehab FB page, I'll let you know if I get any responses.
If we don't have anyone, are you willing to rehab this guy (BTW, do you know is it a he or she?)?
Thanks,
Kim

I am going to pm tomcics.
He had a little squirrel and we found a great place for him to take Nick Jr. to.
It's somewhere near Detroit. I will direct him to this thread.

My dad had noticed him around. My vet is closed as well as the one my parents use. Unfortunately no meds around ... could use Neosporin but not sure squirrel would let me that near him. I will try again to get hold him and get Neosporin on him but don't want to stress him out either. He's just a little guy ... definitely not a full adult. He's in the mud room where its much warmer than outside currently.

Just so that you don't have to stay on the board all day, does Kim have your phone number?
Can you pm it to me? I am pm'ing some members who have raised squirrels that can hopefully help out.
Just in case you aren't on the board, could I pass your number along IF we find someone willing to help?

Thank you for responding so quickly to Jill's call out for help Kim ... I cannot put him outside for sure. Tears at my heart that he's (or she -- I don't know) seemed to be suffering outside. I'm here for the weekend but with 4 cats in the house ... not the best idea for me to try and rehab him. During the week I'm gone 12 hours a day ....

PJ Garner is a squirrel rehabber in Ferndale but doubtful that she is taking new squirrels but IR might be able to help, PJ's number is 248-544-0105. There is also a Sally Bradford 586-484-6299 that might be able to help.

Note, as a last resort, there is also a Rochester Hills Humane Society on Auburn road I think that has a wildlife rehab staff. I took a dove there once.

Sally is the one who also helped with Nick Jr. in beginning (originally she was going to take him but PJ kept him as he needed extra care and she fell in love with him). Sally is very outgoing and very easy to talk to.

Update .... I went to Sally's house however, the little guy didn't make it :( He was breathing when I left the house but when Sally pulled him from the crate he was gone. He did have a bad leg with a bleeding sore on it ... hopefully his last 4 warm hours helped his pain. Thank you everyone for rallying around and getting me great information so quickly. Thank you all for working hard to help the little guys who cannot speak for the help they need.

Sally is wonderful!! She's very welcoming and willing to drop everything to help out. I'm going to put my mom in contact with her to hopefully do some volunteering to help out as well.

Thank YOU karens for going the extra mile to help this little one. :grouphug
I know it's not the outcome you hoped for but you did relieve his suffering by taking him in out of the cold. He passed warm and loved. Sometimes that's all you can do and you did it well.
You're the kind of people we love around here. :Love_Icon

Ditto, so very true. The last few hours of anyone's life that are filled with this kind of love & care bring comfort in passing.
Thank you

Oh man..... :( :( Karen this is what happens sometimes when you do this work. I'm so sorry. But he brought you to us and now you have more friends and you can help more animals.
I'm thankful for the 4 hours he got, instead of shivering to death outside.
So sad, but thank you Karen!
Does Sally have any idea what killed this little one?

She didn't say what killed him. She did see the sore on his back leg ... said that it wasn't broken. I talked to my dad and he had noticed some blood around for the last week. When he fell from the tree this morning, could have done something as well. During the ride to Sally's he did start moving around a bit and his tail went straight up ... then it was silent but I thought I could see him still breathing. I think he was just at the end as I walked up and almost touched him when I first saw him ... that was strange and what led me to want to help him. Glad I could give him a little bit of peace and warmth.. Im
