Nutmeg ripped off his nail on his back left foot! He must have gotten it got in a piece of wood. The nail looks to be completely gone. What do we do now? Will the nail come back? Do we need antibiotics?

It happens. Take a deep breath, clean it up and get a weight for a dosing of INFANT ibuprofen.

It won't come back, but he will heal and be fine. NO peroxide.

I feel like I'm going to cry! I don't have a scale that can appropriately weight him. Can I add a picture and have someone help? S.O. is headed to the store now for infant ibuprofin.

I cannot find the nail that is gone, what if it wasn't a clean ripping out?

Don't worry he will be fine!:grouphug Send me a pic. Text or email or can you post it here?

We can guesstimate the weight for dosing the infant ibuprophen, it has a wide margine for "error".
Nutmeg will be fine and so will you..........deep breaths. :hug

Can you send me your email? I'm not on my computer so I cannot resize the picture. He didnt make a sound when it happened which is why we don't know how it happened. Blood all over the place. He was shaking his foot a lot and when we put him in his cage he ran straight to bed with his brother and hasn't come out since. I can tell he is in pain. =/

I really appreciate your help!

Squirrels will run when something like this happens, and I'm not sure why.
They like to be in a closed in space too when they are hurt. He is probably just
trying to take it all in himself, and perhaps even licking it to clean.
He may get nippy if you try to dose him or reach in, so just be careful.

We just had a member whose squirrel needed two toes amputated because she
caught them in sofa fringe I believe and really injured them badly. The vet did an emergency
operation on Sunday, and her little one is doing excellent.

thank you.. I'm sure I'm overreacting a bit I just feel so awful for him. I can't stand to see him hurting. We are planning on taking his brother and putting him in the smaller cage until we get Nutmeg out. Ginger gets pretty protective over his brother.. I think its sweet. They love each other more than anything.

I can see ginger in there cleaning his foot up, I'm keeping an eye making sure he's not "grooming" the area too much.

surprisingly, Nutmeg has NEVER bitten.. not even in play. He's a sweet boy. Though I'm sure being in pain will make him a little more nippy so I'll make sure to wear gloves.

thank you so much! I'm so lucky to have found this place!

When it's our little ones we just panic. We hate to see them in pain, that's just being a good Mom. :tilt
So you're not over reacting at all.
How special that Ginge gets protective over Nutmeg..........that's really touching.
The ibuprophen will help with the pain and discomfort. And it can be dosed ever 4 hours as needed too. :thumbsup

Peroxide can damage healthy tissue and has been known to cause issues with wounds on other squirrels. A VERY mild betadine solution in water is a good flushing solution.

He looks a little smaller in your pictures Gayle, I may back this up to 300 grams, do you think?
It wouldn't hurt either way since this can be dosed three times stronger that what the chart says.
So leave it for dosing at 350 grams?

Yeah, the dose is so flexible that high is okay for this little one. He is probably more like 300g.

Thank you everyone, I dosed him as though he was 200 grams. I figured less is safer for him, especially since it can be given every four hours.

Nutmeg is not a cuddler nor does he like being handled so he's not very pleased with us right now, hes hiding from me like hes scared of me.. breaks my heart =/. I gave him an almond for being so good and not trying to bite at all!

I was able to check his foot out a bit, looks like the nail was completely ripped out.. which I'm thankful no shreds were left behind.

Thank you everyone for your help, I sincerely appreciate it

When my Jaxson had his ripped out (most of the claws on his back feet) and I think one or two on his front paw. He shook them like crazy for a couple days, especially when they touched something. There was minimal swelling and after a few weeks they all grew back perfectly. :thumbsup

Hi everyone! Sorry I didn't get an update out to you all earlier, I meant to this morning but I slept through my alarm and was late for work!
Nutmeg is doing pretty well today. He is obviously still sore and I imagine he will be for a day or two longer. For those who don't know, Nutmeg has a couple of bum feet. His right is better than his left, but still not very good at gripping. He isn't able to climb up and down on the cage very well right now, and balancing on his hind legs while eating is not happening without him tumbling over. He has been bringing food into his bed and laying there eating it. I witnessed earlier this afternoon, his brother bringing him a block, it was heartwarming to watch Ginger take care of Nutmeg! :Love_Icon
I let them out of the cage and put Nutmeg on the top where he spent most of his time chomping away on stick while his brother chased me around the house :grin2 Nutmeg ran around for a little bit and didn't make any noises as though he was hurting.
When they calmed down the two boys curled up in my arm and we had a big grooming session followed by Nutmeg taking a short nap in my arms (he has never done this before).

The pictures that are attached are from about an hour ago.

Anyways, I wanted to say thank you to everyone again! So glad our baby is doing okay!

OMG that is just precious that Ginger brought Nutmeg a block. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon
Gayle had a little one do that once for a cage mate that was really under the weather.
These little squirrels just are too endearing when they do things like that. Seriously that is
just so touching!
