View Full Version : Baby Squirrel Early?
Hello alll, I was at my Moms house this afternoon in Tittusville Fl. and found a baby boy dead in the driveway, looks like the poor fella fell about 35' on to the concrete. His eyes were opened, so about 5 weeks old and just breaking teeth. Isn't it early for a 5 week old baby?

It is but they don't seem to be keeping schedule these days.
Where you find one there is most likely others, I'd keep an
eye out...

Eric, there used to be short breaks in Florida but now they have babies pretty much year round. It will slow a little but yes babies can fall from the trees anytime.
I would definitely be looking out for more. Sometimes the mom will be killed and not return to the nest. The babies (especially this age) will wonder from the nest in search of mom/food. They are uncoordinated and will fall from the tree. I would watch for more. If they survive the fall they will approach people. Many will actually climb up the leg of a person. That's how some people find TSB ... "I was outside and a baby squirrel climbed up my leg". :tilt I would call Mom and let her know. :thumbsup
We lost our Rocky Nov. 10th or I should say we haven't seen him since, We are slowly getting over it. This has opened the wound in my heart. Safe bet I will be there in the morning with a spotting scope looking for activity. The little guy did look malnourished. Thanks

Sorry to hear about Rocky, but you never know. We have a member whose squirrel showed up a year after she last saw her.
Here's a link to what a baby squirrel sounds like. Try going over when there isn't much activity in the morning and listen, listen, listen.....they will keep this up for a while and typically take breaks of a few minutes or to get in a few winks and then start again. It's SO sad.
I'm sorry I don't see the link.

I agree with Nancy. I wouldn't give up on Rocky. There have been many that returned even longer than that. In 'squirrel time' two months isn't unusual.
Thanks for checking for more babies. :thumbsup I just love it when there are good people that care. :bliss
