How can I deter chewing, using something like apple bitter or likewise on wood? What's safe?
Koba is just about six months and is getting antsy and has started escaping from my room and chewing on my door. One, he's ruining my door and two, if he chews a hole through it like he has my drawer, I'm screwed because:hug i have no way to keep his in my room. He chews it because it's locked and he wants out and is trying to pull it open. I use a water bottle to squirt him (don't harpoon me, guys!) which works REALLY well! As soon as he sees the squirt bottle he stops what he is doing.
He has plenty of wood toys, so don't get the wrong idea.
I jut need something safe to put on the wood to deter his chewing before he ruins my door.

If the door isn't locked and he can open it fine, he doesn't chew it.

I don't think anything short of hardware cloth (wire mesh) is going to keep him off that door. This is one of the big hazards of free-roaming "pet" squirrels......the Number One hazard, of course, is that he is going to chew wires too. :(

I've tried bitter apple and things of type, I think all that accomplished was to add more flavor to their chewing delight.
I agree with Maura, cover the wood with hardware cloth or for specific areas you could use thin metal like flashing.
It bends easily and can be formed and painted.

I put rodent repellent on some cables once. The effectiveness went away about the same time as the smell of vixen pee. People with squirrels need granite houses. :grin3
