I'm not in the best shape, but this sounds like hypoglycemic shock at first blush. Molasses on the gums can help bring them round.
How old? What is his weight? What kind of formula? Are you feeding 5-7% of body weight, and on what schedule? What are the circumstances he came to you? Have you done the pinch test to test for hydration?

i am not sure of the age about 6-8 weeks i am guessing....he is 130 grams (4.6 oz)....i gave him karo syrup but he is still wobbly and not standing on his feet right...he finally started holding the tums with his front paws...i just gave him another 1 mL at 5:43 am...i am using esbilac puppy 1:2 ratio...i am giving him pedialyte and water with the formula....plus i encluded some pureed banana's so he would eat it....i just gave him some karo since i havent gave it to him in about 6 hours....he is sleeping again...he ate 1 mL .2 mL karo syrup .4 mL water....he pooped and peed....

I am fading. Quick notes. Are you combining pedialyte with formula? Please answer. If so, STOP.
When did he open his eyes? They do so at 5 weeks. Given that, what age?
Got pics? It can help diagnose.
Is it Esbialc powder with probiotics on the label?
Again, what is his story? How did he come to you?
Also again, are you feeding 5-7% of body weight (e.g., a 100g sq would get 5-7ccs), and on what schedule?
I might go away, but others are already coming on. Your answers will help them. Details are important. Describe him, his circumstances, and when this all began and how it presented. Direct, bullet point facts are best, not a wandering paragraph. If this becomes an ongoing case, people will want to refer back to specific points, not re-read a long story. Think of your description like notes in a medical chart, because they really are.

forgot to answer some questions....yes i have done the pinch test...his skin was going back to normal right away....now since he has been acting like this; his skin is staying up for about 4-5 seconds...so that is why i started the pedialyte again...we came across it in a park...we were driving and it was in the road...we didnt hit it but drove over it...the little guy didnt move...then we pulled over and sat there for a minute...i noticed a bigger squirrel in the road down the street dead...so the little thing didnt move out of the road and there wasnt any squirrels around...it was freezing out and my husband walked up to it and it was shaking really bad....we got a container and warmed him up...then we contacted someone....he is not going to be coming home until late tonight....i have never taken care of squirrels...but i have my yorkie puppies...they all had some major medical conditions...hypoglycemia was pretty bad in all 3 and the pups our female had...i dont have any nutrical so that is why we have karo...i have been in constant contact with eric....i am waiting for him to get home...the little guy is moving around WAY better now that i am feeding him 1 mL every 15-20 minutes....and he has been passing more stool and urine....

Probably my last note. 4-5 seconds is bad. Dehydration causes a downward spiral. Hydrate and give sugar. If on PL for more than 24 hrs, discontinue. Water, or sugar and water only. Salt will become counterproductive.
Good luck. Keep checking in. More people are showing up.

Sleepy Farelli is giving you good info.
Mix the esbilac with water ONLY. No pedialyte, no banana, just water.
To hydrate IN BETWEEN feedings, mix 1 teaspoon regular table sugar into 1 cup of water, warm it, and use that instead of the pedialyte.
You are best to feed 5-7% of the baby's weight at each feeding, and then give hydration in between feedings with the sugar water.
You say you are putting him ON a heating pad. The pad needs to go under the container he is in - baby shouldn't be right on it. Too MUCH heat could be helping to dehydrate him. What are you keeping him in?
How old, do you know? Eyes open or closed?
czarina

How long have you had him?
Getting him properly hydrated and warm, are the first steps, and very important.
Do not use towels.
Do you have any fleece? Olf T-shirts willalso work.
Please answer any and all questions, as you never know what is important.
Do you understand what CritterMom meant when she said to feed 5 to 7% of his body weight? This is very important.
How long have you had him?

Best if you write it in another program first and then copy and paste.
When you log in, there's a box that says something like "keep me logged in". Check it so that you don't log out and lose data.
Please keep up with the list. There's lots to know. Adult diet and care is different, and lots of people get it wrong, and get sick and dead sqs as a result.

not sure on age approx 8 weeks
eyes open
bottom teeth long
top teeth short
130 grams
was feeding every four hours esbilac formula premixed 1:2 he was eating 5-10 mL (is closer to 10 now)
lays on me currently
4am-6:30am every 15-20 minutes eating 1 mL from a syringe
6:30am-current every 20-30 minutes (but has not eaten for 7:30am)
he will not eat the plain formula (only with the banana) this just started happening with him sick
the heating pad was an emergency thing (didnt know company turned the heat down in his room)
he has a small cage with fleece blankets (to clean everyday)

You said he was on heating pad alternating between low and medium.
The heating pad SHOULD BE ON LOW under half the container so he can crawl off if he gets too warm.
You said you gave him a Tums in water. Do not give more Tums. Babies on formula do not get MBD.
Put him up to your ear and listen closely. Do you hear clicking when he breathes? This is very important.
jamie
11-28-2014, 07:46 AM
only have had him 2 days (today)
was fine yesterday and and the evening/night before
something happened all the sudden
i did give him 1/2 walnut and some veggies because he had his teeth and able to hold and gnaw them
i need to feed him again so i will be back here in a few minutes

If you even thought you heard clicking, you need to start looking for antibiotics just in case. What antibiotic do you have?
Put him to you ear! Listen closely. Clicking= Pneumonia=Death without antibiotics.

I have to go. So tired and have to feed my gaggle of troubled waterfowl in 8hrs. Clicking is death. Listen closely and report what you hear. If clicking, we will need you to get antibiotics immediately, tell us what you have and the weight of the sq. We will tell you what you can give and the appropriate dosing instructions, as per weight.
jamie
11-28-2014, 08:06 AM
he is not on the heating pad anymore he is wrapped in a cut up fleece blanket
he just ate the milk without any banana and actually was lapping at it
he is walking on his front paws now
he is just wobbly
he isnt shaking either
so should i keep feeding him every 1/2 hour?
his weight is 130 grams
i have bactrim 800mg
thank you farrelli!!...
jamie
11-28-2014, 08:11 AM
actually i already have him on the antibiotic (i forgot because of all the crazy stuff that has happened since 11 pm last night)
so he had a dose at midnight
i have everything wrote down that has been happening (time of day) and i was just going through it all and remembered about the antibiotics from my paper
i have stopped:
tums
pedialyte
bananas
so should i keep waking him up and feeding him every 1/2 hour
HRT4SQRLS
11-28-2014, 08:16 AM
I would still offer him the option of the heating pad (LOW).
If he doesn't need it he will crawl off.
Are you sure there is no clicking? Usually when they crash suddenly, it is due to pneumoniae.
The Bactrim (SMP-TMP) could be used but it is NOT the best. Do you have Ciprofloxacin? I would call friends or family and try to get one pill ... even Amoxicillin would be better. Even though he seems better you need to be SUPER vigilant about the possibility of pneumonia.
If you think he is better, I would start slowing transitioning back to the normal feedings. Watch him closely for dehydration. Hydration is more important than food at this point.
farrelli
11-28-2014, 08:18 AM
I'm really going now, but every 1/2 hr is way to much. I'll let others explain.
State how much antibiotic you've given and what instructions you're following. Too much can cause internal injury. He may need to be flushed with fluids.
HRT4SQRLS
11-28-2014, 08:20 AM
How did you dose the antibiotic?
Did you crush it and mix with water?
Dosing is done by weight of the squirrel and the concentration of the drug.
No, I would not wake him every 1/2 hour for formula. I probably would give extra hydration every 2-3 hours.
jamie
11-28-2014, 08:21 AM
one more thing
i am keeping him elevated while awake and asleep
just in case it was clicking
i don't have my stethoscopes they are at my grandpa's house
but i will keep trying to hear if he has it
he is grinding his teeth
is that normal
jamie
11-28-2014, 08:25 AM
.12 mL first dose of bactrim at 11:56pm

Grinding his teeth is a sign of pain.
Gently move his arms & legs to see if he flinches from anything, as if he sprained it.....
Gently massage his belly to see if he reacts in a way that would signal abdominal pain...

Not really. It can be an indication of pain. Sometimes though they do make mouth/teeth/grunting sounds that are completely normal.
Does he appear to be in pain or is he resting comfortably?
I think we should dose the Bactrim properly. Do you have another pill or is it a liquid?
Could you post a picture of him?
jamie
11-28-2014, 08:36 AM
i checked him over by moving body parts and gently pushing around on his belly. He did not act like anything was wrong. He did not flinch or anything. He just wanted to curl back up and go to bed

Is Eric a pharmacist, MD or rehabber? :grin2
That dosing is correct!! :thumbsup
The loading dose was also a good idea.
I would not continue for 14 days. 5-7 days should be adequate for a bacterial infection.
14 days is used for coccidia (a parasite).
Your dose is correct but just as a FYI, according to the book (Wild Baby Mammals) that we use for
dosing, the correct dose for squirrels (for Bactrim) is 25mg/kg. I suspect you already knew that. :)

I will post a picture. But everybody in my house is currently asleep and i do not know how to do transferring of pictures. but somebody should be awake here shortly. he is sleeping comfortably. When he wakes up he acts like he is starving. He just did that when I checked him. But went right back to sleep when i wrapped him up in his blanket
I do not have liquid antibiotic. It was a tablet. I split the 800mg to make 2 400mgs. then i just disolved it in hot water

Please do not miss any doses, if you are instructed to continue with it.
Also, good that you stopped the tums and banana. Too much calcium or potassium can lead to critical situations.

Are you talking about the Bactrim here in this post?
If so this is INCORRECT.
First never split a pill.
If you have another Bactrim, crush the WHOLE pill and add 16 mls of water to it.
Always give a probiotic 2 hours prior or 2 hours after giving any antibiotic.
ALSO could someone have handled your little squirrel and dropped it?
This to me sounds like he has taken some sort of a fall. You suggested too
that he was trying to bite, which is indicative of pain. Do you have infant ibuprophen?
Is his tail dragging, or is he able to hold it up?
You can email me
photos and I will post on the board.

That is exactly what I was going to ask. I am very near you also if you need anything but if you have Eric you have far more than I could offer as I am a newbie. I have cipro, ( fishflox) if you need it.
How long have you had this little one?
Sounds like you have not had him too terribly long.
I am assuming that he is 7-10 percent dehydrate if his skin is tenting that long. I would try to make sure he gets at least 9 ml of extra water or a home made re hydration solution via mouth if he can take it ( in the 24 hour )

You are doing a great job. BUT, your work has just started, ha ha. With squirrels, it gets worse before it gets better. By that I mean, the worrying gets worse. You have only hsd him 2 days. They have a way of getting into your heart, and then the little rascals start worrying you sick. Is he eating right, is he pooping and peeing right........and it just goes on from there. But, there is nothing loke the love of a squirrel.
Also, I would try and keep him as quiet as you can for now. I know, easier said than done, but it is really important for his recovery. Dark, quiet is what he needs. Whatever is going on, is taking a toll on his little body, but, as a wild animal, he will try to hide how ,bad he feels, so predators don't notice him. So calm and quiet.
Also, I think Nancy might be right. He might have gotten injured. They are clumsy at that age, and he might have tried to jump and missed his mark, or been climbing and fell. But when they grind their teeth, it usually is a sign of pain.
Never cut a pill in half, UNLESS, it is scored. If it is scored, the company has manufactured it to have equal amounts of the med, in each half. This is a rule we use in the hospital.
But you are doing great, keep up the good work!

I see that Nancy already told you that you add 8cc water to 1/2 of that 800mg tablet. Did you get the corrected dose?

ok sweetie I'm not near my book and doing this from memory now and I still come up with 6, can you show me what I'm doing wrong and how you come up with 8 please?
Eric, IF you are going with HALF of the 800 mg pill, that will make it 400 mg.
We want a strength of 50 mg/ml and this is dosed at 25 mg/kg, so you have to
add 8 mls. of water to the 400 mg of medicine.
IF you only add 6 mls the strength is 67 mg/ml which is considerably higher than
what the book doses.

Eric,
I wanted you to know that your dosing was SO close I didn't feel the need to bring it up. If you are using the WMB 'chart' for dosing you do need to get your solution to 50 mg/ml which would indeed be 8 ml of water added to a 400mg pill. If you are doing the 'math' the concentration of your suspension (67) is plugged into the formula. Your solution at 67mg/ml would work just as well. The only difference is the amount, which is MINUTE.
For a 50mg/ml solution the amount to give is approximately 0.07ml.
For a 67mg/ml solution the amount to give is approximately 0.05ml
Your dose was 0.06ml. I felt that was close enough as this is not a measurable amount with the crude device (1cc syringe) that we use.
I didn't want Jaime to think that she had overdosed Rocky.

absolutely sweetheart. For some reason I used 300 instead of 400.
The embarrassing Part is that I kept doing it over and over knowing it was 400

Just for clarification for anyone reading.
I always go exactly by the book when dosing.
While the amounts are always tiny, I do it exactly.
The book doses at 25 mg/kg
For the strength you had of 67 mg/ml the dose should have been .048.
The squirrel was given .06.
I consider 25% more per dosing, a considerable amount.
Had this been another drug, such as ivermectin, (and not an antibiotic) this could have been lethal.
Close enough just doesn't work for me. :peace

Hi....this little guy is pretty good....today he has been eating well again...he climbed up my body like he was the day before :) he is sleeping less and playing more...not long play but active...i gave him a whole walnut and he was rolling it around on his little blanket i have out for him....he played with our hands today too!...no kids were in the room where he was at....my father in law stayed in there....but the heat was turned down from mid 80's to around 70....and he was fed by my daughter and put back to bed....the heating pad has automatic turn off....she didnt know it...so it was not on...but so far so good....he has not had that bubbly sound at all today...i have been with him constantly...and when i am not i swaddle him (i guess that would me the word) with the fleece blankets....i put them all around him and he nestles down in them...he has the heating pad only as needed...the room is always warm (even before he came here).....he doesnt grind his teeth all the time...its only certain times...it is mostly when he is sleeping...i have a cell phone with the pictures of him today and the day other day....but you would never know if you seen him right now that he was that bad last night....i didnt think he was going to make it...but i stayed up all night and most of the morning to keep feeding him little amounts close together...then he worked himself back upto 4-5 hours between feedings....i have been giving extra water and also the sugar water that was told to give in the previous posts from others....but he is sooooo much better today....without everybody on here i dont know how i would have held it together and used everybodys feedback...i just did what was instructed....his tail is up in the air...last night it was not...i think it was him having a seizure from low sugar...that is what happened to a couple of my yorkies and i gave them nutrical....but i did not have any and did not want to give him any just in case he couldnt have it....but if you have any questions you can inbox me...i can also send you the picture i took today...thanks for responding!!..:grin3

Oh this is a fantastic update!
This little one was LUCKY to find his way to YOU.
I know that you stayed up all night with him, and believe me,
they can feel the love. I often think that even when they are sick,
they try to "will" themselves better because of the love they know we
have for them.
You did great, absolutely fabulous in fact!
All finders should be just like you!
Thank you for helping him, and for opening your heart and home to
this lucky little fuzzer.
:hug:Love_Icon:hug
Send me pictures if you want, I will gladly post them.
I may not be sitting at my computer, but when I get them,
I will post! :thumbsup

Give Rabbit Rocky a scritch behind his ear for me.
:thankyou

Glad he is feeling better! Can you post a whole body picture of him when he's not eating? His face looks swollen in the picture. It could just be because his mouth is open, but it looks swollen.
