nest boxes

so I just build nest boxes for my 2 young grey squirrels and they wont stop eating at them. how do I get them to stop before they chew holes in the sides

Some never touch their boxes, others destroy them completely. I have an NR who has gone through three huts and a nest box, completely dismantled into 6 pieces, in less than a year.

Seriously, though, you could try giving them lots of branches, wooden toys and even very hard-shelled nuts like black walnuts or hickories to distract them from 'remodeling'.

It will never happen..... chewing on nest boxes is a way of passage for squirrels.
