Hello! I have a one year old grey rescue who is as healtht as can be but my vet is getting ready to retire. He is a family friend and will be moving away shortly. He wasn't able to recommend anyone else if I had any issues so I thought perhaps I would ask if anyone knows of any good vets in the northern Kentucky area?

Also I will mention my little one has had a couple of changes which my vet attributed to dry air and him sleeping in his tissue box as well as him missing me a bit. The mornings after he sleeps in his tissue box (he has a rather large cage with several little nests) he will wake up sneezing. I personally have been having bloody noses due to the drying air and the vet assures me since his eating habits (I follow the food charts here so he is getting proper nutrition) are still good it is just that and the tissues. I freaked out because I had a small cold and thought I had given him one but the vet said he is fine!

The other difference is at night when I come home he is more snuggly. I am not complaining! But I have been working a little later than usual due to busy season which is almost over and he seems... Depressed? He still runs and plays and hippity skips but if I have to answer a phone call or email he lays down and looks dejected. As soon as I am done and pick him back up he is back to hippity skipping! But when it is time for bed instead of going to his nests like he usually does he snuggles closer to me a bit shyly. He has been a lot more affectionate and just seems like if I don't show him 100% attention every second I am here that he gets sad? Which of course has me carrying him around like a baby because I can't deal with that little face. He has stuffies and my busy season is almost over but is there anything I can do to make sure he isn't just lonely or do you think there is something else going on? I also leave the TV on for him while I'm gone. If you have any suggestions or questions please let me know!

Thank you!

Hi! I used to live in nky. The two vets I would recommend are Grants Lick Vet Hosp just south of Alexandria and Simpson Veterinary Services in Walton. I might know a few further north if those aren't convenient just let me know. I don't think either of them would advertise themselves as exotics vets but I think they could help you in a pinch. I think they may have some techs that have done a bit of rehab. Dr. Stricker at Clermont Animal Hospital definitely sees exotics but I'm not sure what kind of wildlife that includes. Also you would be reasonably close to Ohio State's vet school. I'm not sure how much they would do with exotics and wildlife but vet schools are a nice resource for more involved problems. If you have questions about a specific practice in the area or need someone closer to a certain area feel free to ask on here or pm me.

As far as his behavior is concerned, it sounds as though he has your training coming along nicely. Sometimes humans can be quite dense - having found one smart enough to proceed immediately to the "carrying him around all day" stage must be wonderful for him. And it takes so little to keep you compliant - just a simple sad look. This is the Cesar Milan of squirrels.

Truly, they are ruled by their hormones, and sometimes they are so sweet and snuggly and sometimes they are so NOT, just enjoy the good times.

I second Grants Lick in Alexandria. I used to use Dr Crowley there. Not sure if they do wildlife but worth a call.

I use Dr Meakin and Dr England at All Creatures in Amelia and just off Beechmont. Thy do see wildlife.. That beechmont location would be closer to you than Stricker IF. You end up crossing the river.

I know Meakin from his Cincinati Zoo days. He does see wildlife.

I grew up in NKY and live just over the river .:)

Lol! Well I didn't even think of that. He is quite smart and well when it comes to cute little fur gnomes I suppose I'm just a big sucker. Oddly enough that does make me feel better. I would much rather him be fooling me than to be genuinely lonely. :-) Thank you!

Thank you very much! I will definitely be looking up all of their numbers and talking to them. :-) I'm glad there are so many not to far from me that will see the little guy :-)

Just be absolutely certain that they do not seize wildlife from a non-licensed person before going to see them. Just flat out ask them when you call...:grouphug

Just wanting to drop in here and see what came about regarding a vet? I was specifically wondering about the All Creatures Animal Hospital. Are they "squirrel friendly" as in not simply taking them and putting them down.

Dr Mekin at All Creatures in Ohio is super. I just left his office with 3 squirrels.

That said he had never seen a squirrel patient before mine last year. But he is knowledgeable. And he likes challenges. He is extremely Coon friendly.

Good to know. I am taking one to him tomorrow!

Saw your 2014 releases. I have released three so far this year. Flea, Streak and Little Boy.

He has in the past .... And may still also be a rehabber. It is rumored that he has a pet monkey too. We were both junior zoologists at the Cinci zoo 30+ yrs ago

I will warn you.. His personality is a little.. Dryish. But he loves animals. And is a nice guy. Just very focused.
