Our house cat cornered a mouse today.

We trapped it and well it actually walked right into our box.

Upon exam his right eye looks dried out and possibly bloody. But dried. Not sure of our cat hurt it ( which is probable) or of it was hurt and the cat was able to corner.

Whole eye looks like a dried raisin . But not wrinkly like one.. Like a scab or film on it.

It appears to be an adult. I have cipro & smz tmp

Metacam, prednisone, tramadol and a slightly expired amoxiclave .

No other visible injuries .

He has now been named Toby the mouse.

Any ideas?

Can you post a picture of the eye?

SMZ is good for the mouse in case the cat did bite him. He probably weighs about 15-20 grams if you don't have a scale.

If he is running around and eating, I'd give antibiotics for 5-7 days and then release the little tyke :thumbsup. There's not going to be much you can do for the eye, so if it doesn't look painful I'd leave it alone.

No. Not at all. He grooms and eats - thats the inly part that makes me think this was an older injury. Perhaps Hamlet got him earlier in the week or something.

Well....

I tried to get him into my hand so I could flush his eye with saline..

And as I attempted to re situate him He bolted.

He gave quite the chase but finally went under my stove :/

:carzy2 :sorry

I am such a butterfingered :newb

I feel bad for him.. I dunno if he can even close his eye.

Can you take him to a vet or ask one's advice? Last year I helped a duck with a ruptured eye and the vet wasn't sure if it would be better to remove the eye and sew it closed or let it be. He went to an eye specialist and the specialist said to let it be and let it dry up. I guess it's a case by case thing. He did get pain meds though.

Mice are quick little things, don't feel bad. I lost a baby mouse once that was not yet weaned. I was terrified I'd never catch him, but he then went right into my have-a-heart mouse trap and I got him back.

It is possible that that is all corneal scaring from an old injury, in which case he can't see out it, but it doesn't bother him. They teach us in vet school to not assume that it's trauma because the eye has the most blood flow for size so any systemic issue can be caught by the eye (bacterial infections, fungal infections, cancers, etc.) but I feel like in wild animals trauma is probably much higher on the list of issues.

I'd say let him be and try to get him out of the house so the cat doesn't get him again.

I've had dwarf hamsters who suffered these types of eye injuries either by grooming themselves or fighting with another hamster.

The eye took on this same, dried, raisin-y look. In 99% of the cases the eye "died" in that it just shriveled up by itself. my hamsters went on to live with just one eye, no problems or even loss of appetite or activity.

in one case the dried "film" fell off and the healed eye was behind the film. I don't know why this happened with one specific dwarf hamster, but just thought I'd add this optimistic note.

honestly with a cat involved I'd always get the ABs into the animal who was attacked. that would be my priority.

Are you going to keep him as a pet? I don't know how well he'd do with one eye. Some animals are OK, others not. In my case, some birds are OK with one, some not. According to Tufts, my duck wasn't going to do well with one eye, so now he lives on a hobby farm.

Am willing ..to hang on to him if need be. If I can recapture him first...

Next time I'll work over a bathtub lol
