please help. my 8 month old squirrel is being lethargic and twitching. I just started giving her calcium powder so I don't know if that could be the problem. she has periods where she won't move then will start seizing and roll around. please help, she is my baby and I can't lose her. any advice is appreciated.

Do you have molasses or maple syrup? Try to get some molasses into her. What has her diet been?

I'll try giving her some syrup. She eats fruits, mealworms, and occasionally acorns.

Is this a gray squirrel? That diet is REALLY bad. I would bet this is MBD. What kind of calcium are you using and how much?

She's a flying squirrel

And it's the Rep-cal. I just sprinkle it on her food.

Can you get some Tums? The antacids? They are pure calcium and nothing more. You want to get about 200 mg of calcium divided up into many small doses per day into her. I am not crazy about the rep cal - please get the Tums and try. They usually like the flavor of the fruit flavored ones.

I got tums and crunched some up mixed with water and have been feeding it to her with a syringe. Most of it ends up on her fur though so I don't know how much she is even swallowing. She keeps stretching her limbs and and trying to lean her head back. I don't know what to do :(

Keep her nice and warm and keep trying - just a little at a time. Trade off with the syrup - if you have molasses it also has calcium in it.

It sounds she's seizing, which is definitely a sign of MBD. Definitely push the calcium and the molasses. I worry about the Reptical. I think it contains vitamin D which is bad for sqs in high concentrations. You just started with that, right? It's not a long term thing you've been using?

If you haven't seen it, here is the healthy diet thread for flyers:

Your little one maybe having seizures, here is the thread about Pixie. Pixie is currently being treated and having adjustments to her medication.

The flyer diet may help a great deal.

As Anne suggested, my thread may help. If you're in a safe state bloodwork may also help. Is she getting any sunlight or are you using a UV light?

Can you video it? If she isn't on some sort of block it is very possible that it could be MBD. As others suggested, the tums work well. The Repti-cal is not ideal because it had vitamin D and isn't really made for mammals.

Does it look sort of like this (this is my female having a seizure but she has a primary seizure disorder that causes them). http://youtu.be/gx5R4qHxHsc

Oh, this is a flyer, when I first read it I thought it was a grey. This could be diet related, as she should be getting some type of block. But that being said, have been seeing alot more flyers having seizures (I have one who does, they are precipitated by anything that causes her stress). What was she or you doing before you noticed the seizure?

246533246534246535246536246537246538Thanks to everyone for all the advice but I am sorry to say that Lilo died last night. I'm assuming it was the Rep-Cal because I just started giving it to her about a week ago and she never had any problems before then. She was the best pet I've ever had and the sweetest squirrel in the world. I'll never forget you, Lilo.

Oh no!!!! I'm so sorry to hear that. Sometimes they pass for seemingly no reason. She may have had some underlying condition...you just never know. At least she had a mommy who clearly adored her. I'm so sorry for your loss. :sad:sad:sad:sad

I am so very sorry. Did the rec-cal have vit. D in it? Although they do require vit. D, too much is dangerous for them (much better they get it from food such as mushrooms).
