George is purring today, first time I have ever heard a squirrel purr. He is purring while wagging his tail. Anyone know what this means?

He's happy and content - isn't it awesome? Mine purrs when I walk in to his cage/room because he knows he's coming out to play for a while. It's a happy sound.

I was very surprised I had no idea they purr. He has been out running around since 8 am this morning. He climbed up on the back of the dinning chair and started purring. At first I thought I was imagining it, then he took a few laps around the living room up onto his cage and did it again clear as day.

I am glad I wasn't imagining things and even more glad it's a happy noise :grin3

Well, it could be "purring" or it could be a little growl? They will often flash their tails when growling! :grin2

Unlike cats, squirrels do that 'rustling/ purring/pfrrrrrrrrr' sound and flick their tails when they are hearing or seeing something they don't like, and are afraid of. Wilds will do this from a safe vantage point high in a tree, while looking down at a cat or other predator. It usually precedes the full-blown alarm call.

There is another, quieter purring sound that is like a phone on vibrate.....that is a happy and contented squirrel sound.
