I have not posted here in a long while, but about 2 years ago I found some baby squirrels and took care of them. My intentions were always to release them, but with college I never found the time. Then, they seemed to be overweight, and one seemed sick, and it was just a mess. Plus, since they always fought with each other, I figured it would have to be individually that they would be released. Finally, my grandfather agreed to take care of them. He did a great job, but unfortunately he passed away earlier this year, right about the time that I got a job. I'm working as a teacher, and I am flying out of the door by 7 a.m., and usually am not back home until 8 or 9 in the evening. The squirrels are not getting the care that they need, and there is no way I could work on a soft release with them now. I really would like to find someone in the South Texas area to either take care of them for life (although I am unsure of how friendly they are now) or complete a soft release for them. If you have the ability to arrange transportation, I would be glad to give you the money for the gas. Their cage is fairly large (about 5' x 3' x 6'). I also have another cage from Henry's Healthy Pet's that I would give you if you wanted to do the soft release with them since it is easier to move. I have two outdoor nesting boxes for them as well. I love them dearly, but the way that they are being treated right now is like prison. If anyone can step up & volunteer to take them, I would be forever grateful. This absolutely breaks my heart, but I know it is best for them.

Hi.May i ask specifically where you live?. I live in Bishop.I wanted to take them ,but i don't have enough room because of the two i have . I'm searching for Rehabers for squirrels in the area. If anybody else can help that would be great. There's a college near by that ive heard that takes in orphaned squirrels as a teaching tool, but that was sometime ago . Tomorrow i will call around some places i've found online nearby. Maybe other folks can help as well.

I'm so sad that I moved. I had a release cage and all. But we moved to a golf course with no yard and I can't do it here. If I think of anything I will let you know. I know we are close.

Please, please be very careful with the places you call. I have never heard of a school taking them as a teaching animal. Do they keep them, and then euthanize them?
Please, just be careful.
I'm sure you will be.:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Could Happylittlesquirrely take and release? I know you guys are really really close to eachother. A soft release could be done but not sure how much time they need? I released my last ones on Thanksgiving two years ago but man did we have a horrible winter last year.

I have to many Farm cats here. I really wanted them, but other factors as well prevent me. I just rember some squirrels at the college that fell from the drey were taken to the wildlife department and were rehabed and then released in the area where they do the farming and other oustide things. I won't give any info till i'm sure.

I used to work at CKWRI in college but don't have contacts anymore. But it's worth a shot.
I know when I'll found my kids someone game me the name and number of a rehabber in the bluff but I couldn't ever reach her. Have to look up the number.

The school doesn't take to teach. They have a very well respected wildlife program which is part of the college. When I was there the people working on their masters worked with lots of animals. One had a pair of fawns she raised in her house. They also had Sunshine who would run up like a dog and someone's very rich stud deer who had no teeth so we had to make his food on a blender. He was well past the average life of a buck but they wouldn't put him down bc of the money he was worth. They get a ton of money from King Ranch and do a lot of work there. But most of the work is where the money is...deer. and one also had a javelina she raised also. So it may be worth a try but not sure.

If not , i will keep looking.
Mr. Brown:
Wildlife Rehabilitation requires a license from the state so I would not be allowed to take the squirrels. Unfortunately I do not know of any rehab folks who accept small mammals in our immediate area. The closest person is Janice Amsden out of Corpus Christi, Texas. Her contact numbers are 361-939-8314 (6 pm – 9pm) or cell phone 361-779-2840. Good luck.

Ahh! It took me forever to get back on here. I tried responding at work, but unfortunately forums were blocked.
I called the rehabiliator given and followed a path of voice mails until I got the number from someone with the ARK here in South Texas. I had a young gentleman call me back within minutes and came to pick them up. It was heartbreaking to see them go--I left for a minute until my SO convinced me to come back and wish them good luck. I'm glad I did. From there, they were going to be go through the process of a soft release in Aransas Pass. I cannot say enough good things about the ARK. They have great volunteers and have done so much for our local wildlife. I am definitely going to be supporting them from now on! In 2014 alone, they released 14 fox squirrels, along with over 900 others of varying species. Wow!
Thank y'all all for your continued support & good luck to all of the rest of your fur babies.
