I have a 8 week or so baby female grey named Mistique, and I was wondering how one can go about having a cage buddy. She had a buddy named Wobbles, but she shortly died of a brain hemorrhage. Mistique has been sad it seems, or maybe that's me just anthropomorphizing them. I live in NJ, very close to NYC and visit CT and PA often. Is there a forum topic for squirrels looking for homes? Getting a liscence here in NJ is torture so I won't be able to provide vet care so I would rather not have a squirrel that is a NR, but if I did I would take one in a heart beat. :grin3
Can squirrels be depressed, and can they grieve?

Yes, they can get depressed and grieve. Hopefully someone will have someone for you. Just keep looking. I wish that we had a list of sqs looking for homes and/or release sites, but no one wants to take that on, especially me. Wish I had more time.

Are you giving her lots of play and out of cage time? Lots of stimulation? Does she have a stuffed animal buddy and lots of stuff in her cage to play with and hide in?

She has a tiny stuffed mouse toy, a ferret bed, and a little cave made of a platform attached to the cage bars with a ramp and soft fabric all up the sides creating a little cave! She get's lots of out-of-cage time because I'm in highschool, but I'm home schooled by my mom Radagast who doesn't have a job and also entertains her with me. We'd like to get those "forager" toys for birds so she can work to get treats like mushrooms and slivers of nuts! Her cage is very small right now, but so is she. It's about 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet, but we're building a 6 feet by 4 feet by 2.5 feet cage with lots of new fun toys. Hopefully that's big enough? We are no where near done getting all the toys she needs!

Oh, and also an antler piece, a wooden bird toy for her to chew, and a bird's perch that is covered in calcium powder for her to gnaw and climb on.
