I am 17 years old and I was working for my dad last night moving dead branches and dirt from the side of my house into my garbage cans. While working I came across a small baby squirrel, from what I researched it is only 1 to 5 days old. I immediately took him inside and placed him in a cardboard box with paper towels on the bottom. I started to research squirrel rescue and the only thing I was able to get my hands on was a plastic syringe and some baby formula. I did not have a heating pad in my house so I consistently tried to place heated water in a ziploc bag in order to keep the baby warm. I found 2 more of the squirrels outside and was not sure whether I should have taken them in or not. I decided to take them in because I figure they would probably keep each other warm and help each other survive. So far I have been attempting to feed them water with the dropper and formula every 2 hours but I am not sure if they are successfully eating/drinking. When I am putting the syringe up to their mouth their mouths remain generally closed and small. I squeeze a drop out but it appears to remain on the outside of their mouth. I have not seen them poop in the last 12 hours so I am very concerned. I am doing my best to keep them warm with a lamp that is heating up a towel covering their box. I have never had experience with squirrels and I do not know what to do currently and what the next step would be. I really do not want these babies to die so I would really appreciate if someone could help me with a guide to raising them or a contact number in South Florida of someone that could take them and raise them in proper conditions with a larger experience base than I have.
Thanks

When did you find them? How long ago? Were they in a nest or had they fallen from a tree? Did you leave out to try to reunite with mom? Do they have fur? Can you see their umbilical cord?
Others will be on soon. They should be in a container with a heating pad on low under half with a towel on between. You can also take a sock and fill with rice and heat in the microwave which works better than a zip lock with water ale sire you squish.and squish after hearing so there aren't any hot spots.

Hi Welcome and thanks for rescuing these babies. Warm, dark and quiet is the most important. There are members in the Miami area that most likely can help you, but in the meantime, can you put dried rice in a sock and tie it off. Microwave this for 45 secs and then shift the rice around with your hands so that there are no hot hot spots. Cover this with a t-shirt and place it in with the babies. Are they pink and hairless? If so, they can not thermo regulate their body heat at this age and they must be kept warm.
Put t-shirt material or fleece only in the box to snuggle under, no towels, a Lucite box is best as cardboard is very drying. Poops are not that important at this time. Can you get us a picture? But it is important that they are warmed before hydrating which is the next most important thing. I am going to post this so you can answer the questions posted.

Cannot get a picture at the moment due to the fact that I am at school and my dad is taking care of them. The babies mom was not present I searched everywhere and the location that they were found in would make it seem the mother had disappeared because they were trapped in scattered locations. The babies are pink and hairless with unopened eyes. I would love for someone that lives in South Florida near the Coral Gables area to be able to help me out and if someone could put me in contact it would be amazing. So far the last time I was with the babies they had survived the night and were all cuddled together in the cardboard box. I am trying my best to just keep them alive until someone can take them for me to care for them better because I am not sure that I am prepared to raise them on my own.

Very sad news today. Two of the babies passed away while I was driving them to the private residence of Lloyd Brown. It was very sad for me and I cried for hours. I wish I had found this forum sooner so that I could have made contact with someone to save the other two. One of the babies however did survive and was placed into the hands of Lloyd's mother who claimed to be able to take care of the baby until Lloyd returned from work. I am going to try to check up on the other baby every once in a while to make sure he is ok. Ill keep everyone updated if they would like to be.

You did a great job rescuing them and then finding help for them by coming here to the TSB! :hug Sometimes, we can't save them all, but your actions gave them a chance. They passed over together and in the safety of your company. Hopefully the last little squirrel can rally and be released in the spring!
:thankyou

ButlerScott15 :hug you did wonderfully....as others have said these little ones would have had a horrible death if you had not managed to find them all. Who knows what trauma they went through before you discovered them...since they were scattered around a predator may have been messing with them :dono who knows...and they may have passed from something that occurred before you ever found them (fall from nest) the thing to remember, as others have noted, is these babies were warm, safe from insects and predators, and they were together in a little squirrel pile :grouphug so you know they passed peacefully :shakehead it's still heartbreaking :boohoo but I hope you find some comfort from the fact that you were their guardian angel :bowdown and hopefully the last little one will survive and that will be a miracle you started :Love_Icon Please keep in touch, and let us know how this little one is doing...and how you are doing....we've all cried hours over a squirrel's death :shakehead so know that we understand and are here for you too! :thankyou :Love_Icon
