View Full Version : Syringe isn't flowing smoothly - suggestions or alternatives?

Using 1cc syringes. Basically they either don't work at all or only work for a couple of feedings before they get "sticky."
They aren't flowing smoothly and end up "jumping" ahead, causing the formula to squirt out.
Any suggestions to get the plunger moving smooth, or any other alternatives to the syringe?

Are these O-ring syringes?

Put a teeny tiny drop of olive oil or vegetable oil on the black plunger or ring. This is a TEMPORARY fix only and you should order more syringes asap.

Yes, O Ring syringes. We have a supply of them, but they are all doing it, we go through one about every feeding at this point. I don't recall every having this much trouble before.

Like MM said, a tiny bit of oil. What are you using to clean them with?

Is there a preferred method of cleaning? Like a particular solution that works best?

They sound like the medicine syringes I got from the vet. In my case it turned out they were disposable syringes. (They neglected to tell me this when they gave me the medicine that they switched from reusable to one-time-use-only syringes.) Maybe post which brand your are using to see if anyone else had trouble with that particular one so you know whether you just got a bad batch or you need to try a new kind.
In case you are wondering I used a thin metal rod through the end to slowly back the plunger out. I did get them to work when I was VERY careful, but it is beyond me why they only gave me a handful of these (about 5) one-time-use-only syringes when my mouse was to be on both Baytril and Doxy twice a day for 14 days. (They have since returned to the reusable ones.) I would not do this for yours, though, because it might affect the flow
As for cleaning, I soak my syringes in hot water and Dawn and then rinse, rinse and rinse again. I am sure there are other equally effective methods, though, that others will add.

Cleaning w hot water. I think you may be right, they may be disposable ones. Any good reusable ones I can order online that anyone recommends?

Go to this link and order these 1 cc syringes.
While your there, order some HHB squirrel block and whatever else you may need, nipples, formula whatever, because the shipping is $5.99 regardless of what you get, (except for the cage of course.:grin2)
These nipples are sold out all over so pick up some tonight.

This shouldn't happen with the O ring, where did you get them? Very strange, I have some that I have used so often, they no longer have numbers on the side. :tilt
