hello my name is mike. My Squirrel friend George has a Massive ear infection and its filling up his ear hole.
i noticed it yesterday when he was breathing funny. so i looked him over carefully. um, he has black scabs filling up his ear. they are loose and bleed a bit. i cleaned it out just now with anti biotic ointment. it seemed to give him comfort. he slept soundly soon after. here are some pics. i think this could be really bad because of his breathing not being normal during his grooming! he seemed stuffed up. but hes breathing soundly now as he sleeps! if anybody can help please call 503 901 8593. fyi hes a fox squirrel so a vet wont help me. um heres the pic. i know not to use the anti biotic ointment any more because of it messing with his gut flora if he eats it. no worries. im not gunna do it any more. i was just worried and wanted to comfort him!

Yikes, I have never seen black infection like that on a squirrel -- and I see it is in his eye as well. Is there any way you can get Flagyl (metronizadole) for him? It is an antibiotic, antifungal, antiprotozoal agent and may help him. In the meantime I would try to clean his ears carefully with a q-tip and Betadine solution.
I am sending this pic to my vet via Facebook -- he is very good at getting back to me about things like this.
Question: I was under the impression that Oregon was anti-Eastern GREY squirrels, not foxers. Are you sure a vet won't see him?

I have never seen that either. Are you sure this is an infection?
Does this have an odor to it?
You can use abs. you just need to give a probiotic 2 hours prior to 2 hours after administering.
Where are you located. Would you be willing to drive to get to a safe vet?

IR, they are anti-foxer, too. Neither the foxers nor the eastern grays are native...

:shakehead
Nor are the PEOPLE living in Oregon, either, unless they can prove they are Native American! :madd
Sorry, Crit....this crap just burns my a**. Thx for educating me, though.

Can you check his teeth (length and orientation), make sure they look normal?

um I just now stuck a q-tip in his mouth and checked his teeth. all 3 of them are perfectly normal. last year he had a tooth removed because of an odontoma
yep his teeth are fine.

With that history of odentoma, I would be concerned that there is some infection in the sinus possibly related to the original odentoma or the current condition of his teeth. Is Duckman located around there?

I just now took a look in his mouth. looking good in there.
his teeth look like they always have. um, last year he had an odontoma removed along with one of his top teeth. the xray showed that his other tooth root looked ok.
the other top tooth looks short but its always been that way for years.
thanx for helping!

Who did the surgery? Are they no longer available?
"Duckman" is one of our members - a very active member! He is in your area (just over the river) and I have sent him a message with a link to this thread. I am SURE he will weigh in soon - he always does!

yes im positive he's considered an invasive species. the vets will kill him. i have cash, but no access to anti fungal drugs. do you have a hook up for me.
that would be awesomness!

Regarding the drug mentioned.
The drug name is Metronidazole, and it is commonly sold under the brand name Flagyl - it is a human drug and requires a prescription...but...
Aquarium places can sell this over the counter labeled for aquarium use. It is exactly the same med you would get at the drug store with a prescripption from your doctor. I believe the commone "aquarium" brand is called "Fish Zole." You may want to call the aquarium shops in Portland and see if anyone has it.

Correct. They are no longer available. I had a friend who was a connection to a safe vet, but that person is no longer available.
