I need to know how often a baby grey (8 weeks old) can have infant ibuprofen for pain. I have to step out for a while but I will have this baby this afternoon. I am so sad. :(

Aw - what happened to him?
The dosage sheet that everyone here has is every 4 hours as needed, and the dosing is quite low, so that is very safe.

Infant Motrin can be given every 4 hours

OK ... I have baby Pippin here.
This is the baby that I received before I went to Texas. She had pneumonia and was treated successfully with Ciprofloxacin. She has been at a sitters house. She has received wonderful care. I actually visited her on Friday and she was doing great. The 'caregivers' have fallen in love with Pippin so she was still under their care. We have had ongoing conversations about her future. It was made VERY clear that she would be released at the appropriate time. They understand that she is not a pet and were in agreement that release was in her best interest. I know ... it's hard NOT to fall in love. :Love_Icon
Everything was fine until last night. Pippin jumped off of the shoulder of the caregiver and landed in the cup of hot water used to warm the formula. :eek This morning she would not take formula and was very lethargic. I received a call this morning and a video of her. My first impression was of that she was in pain ... grunting and maybe a little teeth grinding sound. I told them to get infant ibuprofen. After the call, I listened closely to the video again and I could hear it as clear as anything. Pippin is clicking. I called them back and told them to give her a drop of the Cipro that she had. Arrangements were made to pick her up.
I don't believe the hot water had anything to do with this all thought the timing is certainly suspect. They told me that she took formula after the 'hot water' incident last night. If she was in serious pain last night I doubt she would have taken formula. She has no signs of being burned at all. Her breathing is very labored. I gave her another drop of Ibuprofen (just in case) and she received another dose of freshly prepared Ciprofloxacin because the other was near or exceeded it's expiration.
Pippin is sleeping now and I am praying that she will respond to the Cipro very, very soon. Poor little baby. :Love_Icon

Very thankful right now. Pip just took a few cc's of hydration fluid. :bliss It's the first sign of hope that I've seen.
I sure needed a sign. I was getting pretty discouraged. :( Maybe I'll try to get a few hours of sleep. :tilt

Pip is still alive this morning but she is in very rough shape. We both had a very difficult night. Her clicking is so loud it breaks my heart. :(
She is on stacked antibiotics due to her critical condition. She is on Cipro and SMZ-TMP. I think today will be critical. She HAS to improve today or ..... .
This one has broken my heart. :Cry

Do you have him on heat? I absolutely would not only have him on heat, I would also give him a rice buddy. The nice thing about using them with additional heating pad heat is they never actually get COLD, and being able to cuddle with that warm "body" is so comforting to them. When I saw how little Tim - who is now so much better he is running for President - not only immediately cuddled up to his - but actually tried to nurse on it :Love_Icon I became a big believer in them...
Praying here for both you, Patti and little Pippin.

Pip is hanging in there. It has been very difficult to get fluids into her. Most attempts yield 1 maybe 1 and a half cc's of sugar water. She has taken very little formula. At around 11AM, she took a cc of water and seemed like she might be hungry so my mom got a 1/2 HHB and microwaved it and gave it to her. She ate 1/2 of the half block and hid the rest. That was very encouraging to me.
An hour later she was offered watermelon, grape and apple. She didn't eat any. At 4PM I offered her water in a tiny bowl. She drank a little out of the bowl but gulped too much and choked a bit. I got a water bottle and she did drink a little out of the bottle. I saw a few bubbles rise. She really reacts badly to the syringe because I have put those nasty antibiotics in her mouth so often. :(
At this point, my biggest concern is the clicking. She is still clicking loudly. She has been on antibiotics for a full 24 hours +7 more hours. It isn't just the clicking ... it's her breathing. She is breathing rapidly and probably shallow. I am fearful that she will just give out if the breathing doesn't settle soon. I had hoped that the AB would be working by now. She is on heat and I can make a rice buddy for her. I am still very worried about her. :( It looks like it will be another long night for us. I have tried a hot tea kettle with Vicks vapor rub. I really don't know what else to do. :Love_Icon Pip :Love_Icon

Poor little thing. Do you have any Rescue Remedy? If you do, spray it on your fingers and rub some on the bottoms of her back feet. You really can't use too much of it.
If you have ever been unable to breathe, it is absolutely terrifying. I was an asthma kid... And usually, a fair part of the gasping is plain fear, and if you can push that fear down the breathing quiets a little. Maybe RR will do that for her. Other than the heat and the buddy and the ABX, it is about all I can think of.

It might be a long shot but has anyone tried steroid therapy to reduce lung and bronchial inflammation? If we accept that the ABs are treating the bacteria, little Pippin's pulmonary system is probably still all inflamed due to the infection? Not sure what interactions the steroid and AB would have but if this is dire I would consider this. And keep hydrating her drop by drop if necessary (I know you know this).

It isn't just the clicking ... it's her breathing. She is breathing rapidly and probably shallow.
maybe, it's not so much, or rather not only her respiratory system?
Cardiovascular? Her heart?...
Maybe, if she did fall into that cup of water (or whatever it was), she sustained some injuries into her chest/ribs?
Maybe, it was not a fall into a cup of water, but something else that the people are afraid to admit to?
(no way for x-rays or some kind of a check for internal injuries?)
Because of the sudden onset sounds more like something inflicted or sustained, rather than congenital. In which case - something must have happened that day that the people are not revealing.
From your first post it sounded like they had a thought of keeping her as a pet and you explained to them about releasing a healthy wild animal back into the wild?
I know this may sound crazy, but people always surprise: could it be that they decided to stage something to say that she could not be released so that they could keep her?
dont know what else to think :thinking

I originally used the ibuprofen with the thought that she was in pain from the hot water. On closer examination of the video and from her appearance, it is clear that pneumonia is an issue. I did consider a cardiovascular issue but I doubt that is an issue ... yes, due to the rapid onset.
I was told that after the 'hot water' incident that she did take her formula so I don't think pain is an issue. She has no signs at all. I have continued to give her the ibuprofen (not every 4) but as needed for comfort and fever. I felt like if she felt better she might eat. I even thought about the anti-inflammatory properties of the ibuprofen.
Prednisone ... yes, that's a possibility. I do have a source. :tilt I know that our infectious disease docs do prescribe prednisone for respiratory issues that don't clear with antibiotics. After several course of antibiotics, the COUGH that lingers for weeks and weeks after the infection is gone is treated with steroids. It suppresses the inflammation that causes the chronic cough that just will NOT go away. I like the idea. :thumbsup I think I'll start rounding up the prednisone ... get dosing instructions, etc. Tomorrow will be 48 hrs on antibiotics and if she is still clicking, I will try it. Thanks, this might be the answer.
I have considered that the organism might be resistant to the Cipro ... It is a possibility. The SMZ-TMP has a broader range of coverage and although the sulfa antibiotics were some of the first antibiotics ... they have less resistance than other antibiotics.

You need to stop the ibuprophen if you are going to possibly use prednisone - can't mix the two. It sounds like the ibuprophen isn't needed anyway...

OK I may be WAY off base here, but I have an unusual train of thought sometimes... Comment about asthma got me thinking, and knowing that some steroids can weaken immune response... Just random thoughts forming into an idea... What about inhaled steriods, as in a breathing treatment like given to infants? I've seen videos of asthmatic cats being given an asthma inhaler (steriod) through a device called an Aero-Cat. In absence of that a cut off 2 liter bottle where the airborne suspension would linger... a room without fans or drafts... ???

RobinTN, I appreciate all suggestions. :tilt It's an interesting though but I don't have anything to like that available.
I'm grasping now. I'll probably start the prednisone this evening. I figure at this point, what do I have to loose.
It's 430AM and she is clicking as loud as ever. :( She hasn't stopped since Sunday.

Patti, just throwing this out here.
Do you think she could have cracked a rib, or/and punctured a lung,
from her jump and fall into the cup?
I just reread your post. I am not so sure this is pneumonia. :dono
Something is just not right here.
Edit: Another thought, could she have hit her nose thus causing the
breathing problems. Patti feel around gently on the bridge of her nose,
and along the sides, see if she appears sensitive to any of those areas.
Also if you can, check her bottom teeth, just to make sure they aren't too
long and possibly punctured the roof of her mouth. Will she take anything hard like a nut?
