Hello! Wednesday we found a baby in the middle of the road, and when I tried to put her back near the closest tree, she didn't want to go. She went back into the street, and when I tried again she came up my leg. Brought her home, warmed her up, hydrated her with pedialyte (she was very dehydratd) and now she is eating Esbilac w/ probiotics like a champ. She is about 5-6 weeks old. She wobbles when she walks, and when I open up her box she squeaks at me and climbs up because she knows it's feeding time. She hasn't shown any fear since we first found her. We are calling her Pachi.
Yesterday, my friend cut down an old tree in their yard, and their dog killed mom. So I have three more babies, roughly the same age. I put them in a box on a heating pad, gave them a little while to calm down, and tried to see if they would eat. They were not at all interested, and the little male was very defensive. I can't say that I blame him. I tried to feed them again last night, and they refused. This morning, they also refused, and since it has been a while, I figured they were getting a little dehydrated, and tried to give them pedialyte. They took a little bit while they were snuggled in their nest, and as soon as they opened their eyes and saw me, they quit drinking. How can I help these guys? Will they eventually drink/eat? I know they are really scared, but they should be hungry.
Thanks,
Lesley

These older baby will often not want to eat for the first
24-36 hours. But hunger will eventually make them except
you. Try offering just plain water with a little sugar added.
Might go over better than the pedialyte.

What are you trying to feed them? Also, formula needs to be very warm. Squees won't touch cold formula or even lukewarm formula.

These guys may be too big but sometimes if you burrito them with some fleece with their eyes covered it takes some of t he fear away.

We got a new baby a couple of weeks ago that was dehydrated and she preferred a half water, half apple juice mix warmed up. Thanks for helping these little ones and good luck! Perhaps they are old enough to drink from a small bowl or water bottle? Maybe they would nibble on some squirrel block?

The 2nd set of babies--are they just opening their eyes or where their eyes already open when you got them? are you using the homemade pedialyte or store bought pedialyte? --I have not found a squirrel yet that has passed on the hmp..... try yet. And if the 2nd set of babies are not liking the Esbilac try adding some fat vanilla yogurt to the mix to sweeten it and serve it warm to almost hot.
Homemade Pedialyte:
1 cup warm water
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 salt

Babies had their eyes open when I got them. Last night I got all but one of them to take some homemade pedialyte, and this morning all but one was starving and ate a whole bunch! I'm worried about the one little girl that refuses to eat anything. Even her spitfire brother who tries to attack me will eat.
