Two nights ago I found a dead flying squirrel on my patio. It was killed by a dog (freak thing that the dog slept on the patio). Tonight I stop by the patio to leave food for my gray squirrels and there is a little flying squirrel on top of one of the squirrel houses! My grays are off on there own now so this little guy have been sleeping in the house since his mom died. He's a lot smaller than the dead one. He doesn't want me near him but doesn't run as far as u would think an adult would to get away from me. He just keeps climbing around the house and is now in the house. I'm standing on a stool and he just curled up to sleep in front of him. I left a HH, mango, peanuts n water bowl. Now I'm nervous he needs milk or something. No way the mom would venture out with him when he's still feeding? Is this guy just depressed his friend died?244013244014

Hard to tell from pictures how young, are you thinking the deceased flyer was it's mom?
Had you noticed if it looked like she was nursing?

Easier viewing, looks young. May need intervention.
The thing that troubles me is flyers (in the wild) are communal, this baby is alone...

If he is eating on his own he should be fine... He maybe in your house because he is young and has not found a place to winter over at.. I say keep an eye on him make sure he is eating and don't chase him out till late spring..:grin3

If a flying squirrel has babies late in the season the babies will usually winter over with her.. He looks old enough to eat on his own but I doubt he has a shelter for winter that is most likely why he was still with mom.. So make a new friend give him food and bedding and a reason to stay where it is safe...

He made himself comfortable last night. There is bedding in all the squirrel houses. Can my grays catch anything from this little guy? He can stay as long as he wants. I hope my grays don't chase him out. They have another nicer house they nap in every once in awhile. The other one didn't look like it was nursing. They live in the attic so wouldn't they overwinter there?

I don't know how close you are with that camera... but just given the fact that you are able to get a picture of him, and he knows you are there, and he keeps coming back ... tells me that he is in need of help. I would wait till he is snug in the house, cover the hole, and take him into the house... into a larger cage. ... but, that's just my opinion :blowkiss

I have 2 brothers...neither of them have even sniffed the outdoors, except for the first week of life.... all they know is the security of their home now.... I cannot even take one of them out at a time without them getting completely stressed over the separation. They follow each other everywhere. When one goes to bed, the other follows.... when one eats, the other does too... they even run in the exercise wheel together. I don't know what I would do if one of them passed.... it would certainly be traumatic for the other. :(

I don't think your grays can catch any thing from him but they can hurt him.. I don't really know why he is not in the attic he maybe lost without mom.. If he is letting you get that close though maybe he does need help if you are able you may want to catch him and winter him in a cage so you can keep an eye on him.. Please keep us posted..

I agree. People rarely see flyers in the wild much less know they even have them in their yard...I think something is wrong with a baby curling up like that in front of you. I think she needs help.

I would definitely try catching him when he is in the house and bringing him in. Poor little thing but so cute too.
Mollybear, I have never seen the ones we have in the yard and wouldn't even know they were there except after getting Parkyr and Jordyn I know what their vocalizations sound like and so I have heard them when we've been sitting outside after dark.

That little one is precious. And I agree it needs help. Please bring it in for the winter, or call a rehabber. That little one doesn't look like it knows how to take care of itself yet.
But it sure is a cutie!
