View Full Version : Adeline has pneumonia

Adeline suddenly developed a severe case of pneumonia. She has had injections of Baytril, DexSP, and Furosemide. She is currently on oxygen. She is not doing well. X-rays show a lot of fluid in her lungs, she has very minimal air space. Any advice on any other treatments? What is the prognosis? Should she be euthanized before she suffocates?

She is about seven weeks old, eats Oxbow young rat and mouse blocks, Fox Valley formula 7 cc twice daily. About 105 grams.

This is a squirrel right? --i am not sure why she was given so many different meds, but what she needs is Baytril (dosed per her weight) for about 5 days. Do you have enough or can get enough Baytril for treatment for 5 days? Hopefully some one else will come along that can properly dose her meds for you. *hang in there* and keep her on heat.

Oh no.. is she at the vets?
Poor thing.

No, I disagree - this little one is apparently very sick and is on Baytril which is excellent for bacterial pneumonia, Dex, which is a steroid and very powerful anti-inflammatory, being given apparently to help with inflammation in her lungs, and the furosemide is a diuretic to pull the fluid from her lungs and around her heart. It sounds like she is getting top notch care. Did she aspirate?
The dex and furosamide are both powerful drugs. If you can keep her warm and quiet so she isn't struggling to breathe, I would give them a chance to work.

Yes, she is a squirrel. I don't think she aspirated but it's possible. She had an injection of Baytril and I have been given a oral suspension to start tonight. I also have more Furosemide to give her if needed. She is breathing very fast and struggling to breathe, she is using a lot of energy to suck in air. I'm worried she is gonna tire out. The vet had me take her home because she would be more comfortable there. I have her on some blankets and I covered most of her cage. She eagerly drank some water from her water bottle when we got home. She has only eaten five cc of formula over a span of a few hours. She isn't interested in her blocks right now. I also have pedialyte to give as directed by the vet with all the Furosemide.

I would give her a chance on the meds. If they work then she can make a full recovery.

Make sure you have her container sitting half on and half off of a heating pad. I would also make her a rice buddy - pour some dry uncooked rice into a sock, tie a knot and microwave for 30 seconds, then squish it around in your hands for a while until the heat is even and not too hot and set that in with her. They take a lot of comfort form them - they feel like mama - and it may help to calm her down.
You may want to run the hot shower in the bathroom for a while until it gets steamy, turn it off and bring her in there and sit with her (they are often frightened of the running water)

Okay. She normally does not need a heating pad. I'm assuming since she is so sick go ahead and put her half on and half off one?

Give her an option. When I have a sick animal I always offer supplemental heat. They often go right to it. They have to burn calories to keep warm - if you take care of that for them they can spend that energy recovering. I try to take over as many functions as I can - offering supplemental heat, water, syringe feeding even adults, etc.

Yes, since she is sick she may need help in sustaining her body heat, no need in placing extra stress upon her.
I would continue with the Baytril as prescribed by the vet and push the pedialyte for hydration. (((hugs)))

I love your vet also. They are treating very aggressively so give it time to work. I had a 6 week old baby with pneumonia 2 weeks ago. She was very ill and I was fearful that she wouldn't make it.
6 hours after treatment she was lifeless and critical. 9 hours after treatment she showed slight improvement (took 1.2ml of formula). 11 hours after treatment (2doses) she showed drastic improvement and never looked back. She completely recovered and is doing great.
Poppy has her meds on board. Give them time to work.

Thank you guys for everything! She seems to be hanging in there but poor thing is working so hard to breathe. She just had her second dose of Baytril (it was oral this time instead of injectable). Probably going to give another dose of Furosemide late tonight. Going to offer some formula in the next 15 minutes (she eagerly grabbed the syringe of Baytril, she was pretty disappointed when it turned out to be medicine).

I wished we could put her in an oxygen tent to help her. :(

Adeline willingly had 3 cc's of formula. I fed her incredibly slowly. And after two cc's took about a five minute break. She gets even more short of breath when she is eating. In about 15 minutes I will try and get one cc of Pedialyte in her. When I held her near her water bottle she consumed some water. She has chewed up her blocks as well. I'm trying to take these as good signs. She is half on/off a heating pad on low and was nice and warm when I got her out for feeding. I have the room completely quiet and the half of her enclosure that she is resting in covered.

Anytime a little one that is so sick has an interest in eating and drinking, I take
that as a good sign. She is a fighter for sure! :Love_Icon

I agree that the eating and drinking of water is a good thing .
It would mak sense that sucking makes it harder to breath. Works that way in human babies.

Thank you all for your support. Don't know what I would do without you all!
I feel terrible... she is so sick and this is all my fault. I have failed her. I am trying my hardest to turn her around. She must have aspirated at some point and I didn't realize it :(

Don't go beating yourself up :dono most all of us have aspirated a baby....sometimes the babies just suck too hard...who knows maybe it has something to do with her being put under :dono the point is you really don't know....and you've been doing an awesome job and really all we can do is our best :grouphug so don't dwell on what might have happened and remember all you've done for Adeline...without you she would be gone. Because of you she's here with a fighting chance...they are very tough and resilient ....my money's on Adeline...she's a fighter and she has you! :thumbsup :Love_Icon

And yes.. do NOT beat yourself up. When Pip got pneumonia I felt bad too. It happens though even when we are taking every precaution.

She is hanging in there. The vet said her lungs sound better today. She is still eating formula. We have stopped the Furosemide. She is on Baytril twice daily. I got some raw organic Almonds, would those be okay for her to eat?
