Hello everyone I havent been on for a long time but I just had someone on facebook contact me. She found a baby squirrel with a broken front leg, its groggy and I'm afraid dehydrated. She lives in Matador TX. Is there anyone local that can help? I am in Hagerstown MD and impossible for me to get there.
Thanks,
Amanda
PS Shades is doing well for those who remember... She is a sweetie and turn 2 this year.

Also wanted to add that this baby has a full fur coat and eyes and ears are open so probably 8-10wks or older, I have a telephone number to contact the young lady that found him/her.

This is a fox squirrel right?
I'm thinking more around the 7-8 week mark, the tail is not that fluffy yet.
Does he have teeth issues or is that just the photo?

I'm the one who has the baby. He does have teeth, but they are tiny. I found him Tuesday evening, and have been giving him the goat milk mixture + pediasure & a little Gatorade. He has been eating great, and yesterday, for the first time, had TONS of energy jumping around in his cage, and then on me! He has been peeing lots & pooling every day. His front leg mostly hangs limp. He just drags it when he moves around. Everyone and then I will see him try and grip something with that paw. I don't think it's strong enough to really hold anything or him weight, but I will see his little fingures curl around the bar or his cage. I'm going to upload a video later. Once I figure out how to do it. He's the first squirrel I have ever felt with, and Mandiibair has been helping me all day, every day! I'd love to find a vet here, Lubbock, Childress, Plainview, or even Amarillo that I could get his leg checked out at.
If you call to ask a vet if they'd consider it, could you possibly get in trouble?

Don't use Gatorade! And pedialyte shouldn't be used past 24hrs, and never mixed with formula.

Baby is on goats milk mixture for now, was severely dehydrated the day he was found to point of confusion and dizziness and Gatorade was used for emergency situation, then pedialyte once it was available. But thanks! Also I've never been told not to use pedialyte past 24 hours what is the reasoning for this?

Actually you can use pedialyte for at least a 3-4 day protocol. The confusion is in the wording. You are not suppose to use pedialyte alone for more than 24 hours without adding nutrition (formula) to the protocol. Meaning formula feeding then in between the formula feedings pedialyte can be given, alternately ..not together or mixed with the powdered formula. Pedialyte has no or very little nutritional value and should never be used in place of formula for more than 24 hours. Call me if you need me.

He is a cutie!!! I'm in TX and can tell you to be very careful with the vets. You having wildlife is illegal in TX. Vets in TX can lose their license for treating them. Many will euthanize immediately when you being him in. Be very very careful. However, there are kind animal loving vets out there. The trick is finding one. I personally live in a small town and found out almost accidentally about mine. My daughter's friend is a vet tech there and she told me my family vet for my dogs does indeed see squees. No questions asked. He is awesome. And I know a few others on the board here who yes, have squirrels illegally under the table have vets. But that is going to take some work and asking around on your part. If you do find one close and they sound sincere that they will treat then just make sure they will not take him from you.....and you do not leave the babies side when treated. There are horror stories where they say they will treat but then keep the baby or destroy it. Maybe you can ask around. Same with rehabbers. Each have their own philosophy on treating. But omg is that baby cute! Does it look broken or just badly sprained? ?

To answer your other question the salt in pedialyte starts to work against the baby after the first day or two. If he needs hydration after that, water is best or homemade hydrating solution. We have a current case where a baby was fed pedialyte for four weeks and it isn't pretty. The babies can't handle it.

I've only seen several videos, at first I thought broken, then I thought badly sprained, now I'm wonder if the shoulder isn't dislocated the way baby drags it. Cassi says he is using fingers lightly. I guess an x ray or time will tell. Thanks for your input it's greatly appreciated!

Re- hydration is based on a mathematical formula and should take place over 3-4 days depending on the level of dehydration assessed by the caregiver. Mandi, I do not know if you have the book called Wild Baby Mammal, The First 48 Hours and Beyond. The rehydration process and protocol is fully explained in that book starting on page 49-59. Let me know if I can help.

I'm going to ask around and hopefully I will find someone who will look at him! It doesn't seem to be causing him any pain. I can gently feel it and move it out of the way. But maybe he just isn't showing any pain? I don't know. He is eating more and more each day. And he is definitely pooing and peeing more regularly! I found poo in my hair yesterday AFTER I took off my pants that got pee'd on! He's a stinker! I put a heating pad underneath about 1/2 his cage. And he seems to be sleeping much more soundly now. He sleep great between feedings! And I believe he is getting more and more energy. We try and keep him -some-what- contained during his play time, at least until his leg gets better (hopefully). Thanks y'all for all the advice!!!
