Hi SB Folks,

Walking home in the dark around 9 pm saw a small squirrel, likely a baby or summer birth, in the crook of a tree. Looked a bit lost and I know it's going to be a cool night. Although he/she had a bushy tail, by the light of my cell phone, it looked a bit small, although it seemed okay -- for now (not comatose or shakey).

Overnight it's going to be chilly and I really have demanding job schedule so it would be hard to arrange for some kind of hand off tomorrow. Are there any rehab/rescue people in the vicinity of Hoboken NJ? I can meet you in the park and show you the tree where this little guy/gal is hiding tonight.

Thanks!!

Hopefully the little guy is alright and just settled in for the evening,
he will probably be gone by morning. Unfortunately NJ is one of our
harder States when it comes to finding trusted rehabbers.
Check back in the area when you can, if he's still around and appears
to need help then we can try to figure something out.

Hope he's ok.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for responding. Did not see him/her around the tree tonight when I went home (it's warmer) and left a lot of extra shelled walnuts in case hunger strikes. Could not go look this morning as there was a transit problem and I needed to leave early.

Temps got down to 52, and breezy overnight, but this little one had found a decent spot in a tree, nestled into the narrow space between the base of large tree branches, as a place to try to stay warm. Warmer than a drey but not as warm as a den or with mom.

So the mystery remains (and the only parks person I know who is sympathetic to squirrels and who would have heard about a mishap is out sick with a hip replacement). Yes, there is a shortage of rehabbers, as I did not hear from anyone for a long while, and from now on, I will have to keep my eyes open for this little one, as a bad winter is no place for a summer squirrel with no mom around. It's warm now but could hit the 40s one night any time.

Thanks again!
