Hi all,
Just received 2 news babies 4-5 weeks old and one has an injury to the back leg. Deep laceration. I know antibiotics are needed. What can I give him? Is ALBON suspension 5% okay? I have some older Clindamycin too. What's better and how much? Thanks for input. Both will be going to the vet in the AM but I want to fight possible infection on baby now.

Both are being hydrated with pedialyte and on a heating pad. First feeding went well.

Thanks for any input.

It's a liquid suspension. That's all it says on it.

Okay, Quagmire has been contacted, but for future questions, the 5% is what you can dose from WMB. It is 250mg/tsp and there are 5 ml per tsp so the strength is 50mg/ml which is what we are looking for.:thumbsup

Thanks so much for the info everyone. We spent the last hour debriding the wound and will now give some Albon as described. Wound was filled with maggots but think we got them all. Grabbed the little bastards as they tried to get air. Cleaned off the jelly and baby did real well with the procedure, pretty much slept through the whole things. Back asleep with his brother and given the Albon.

Hopefully he will make it til morning. He seems pretty tough through it all but we never know do we. Thanks again. :grouphug

If you have Capstar, you might want to give a dose of it in case the maggots are internal as well. Praying for that baby and for you. You are doing a great job!:grouphug

Ditto on the Capstar -- definitely! A mild Betadine wash in the wound is always advisable, too. Sometimes with small babies they heal so quickly that infection doesn't have time to set in, my vet told me once, BUT we don't want to take chances.

Sad news is the little boy with the 'very serious' wound had a broken leg and hip, severe infection in the wound (penetrated into the abdominal cavity) was in to bad of shape and the only recommendation was to put him down. I was surprised he lasted the whole night, honestly, but of course held out hope he might have been in better shape. Not so. So run over the rainbow bridge little boy and be with all the other before you we have lost. :Love_Icon

The Good news was the little female is in tip top shape. The vet I use is an exotic vet and has contact with rehabbers and caregivers in Polk County. Since we do not have the time to raise baby girl, we decided to have them get her to a rehabber to raise and release. We have done this before and they take great care of squirrels and other pets.

So that is all I have for a report, I wish a better report was forthcoming. Thanks again for all the guidance and advice in trying to help these two.

I'm glad you have a trusted vet and the little girl will probably go in with others
her own age. I feel bad for the singles.
It's great that you know your time limitations and how much it does take to keep a squirrel happy.
You did a very unselfish thing turning her over. :grouphug
