I found a baby on thursday. I have no experience with baby squirrels but have been reading about them here and elsewhere online. I called wildlife rehabbers, however, this baby is a non-native and would need to be euthanized. I have not been able to find anyone interested in caring for it. We are located in Portland, OR. Any recommendations? Also, the baby has short fur, eyes still closed, I'm guessing 4 weeks old? It is a bit crusty and scabby as well. Initially i saw tiny mites moving on it but now I can't see any. I'm wondering if it's mange and what to do about it.

Thank you for helping this baby! Please keep checking back and I'm sure one of our pacific NW members will be along to help. In the meantime can you post some pics of the baby? Do you have a scale to get a weight?

I've PMd a couple rehabbers in Oregon. Hopefully they'll get the message soon. Keep checking back!
Thank you for caring!
Have you hydrated the baby?
Are you feeding him? If so, what are you feeding?
Do you have him on a heating pad set on low (half under the container he's in so he can move off it if he gets too hot)?
Does he have fleece or flannel he can burrow into?
Tell us as much info as possible. Thanks!
IMPORTANT: Babies must be kept WARM --NEVER feed a cold baby.
_______
+ Emergency Care for Baby Squirrels +
1. Warm the squirrel (never feed a cold squirrel)
2. Place in plastic container w/ pieces of fleece
3. Rehydrate the squirrel (feed pedialyte first 24 hours)
Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water

1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
4. Slowly feed with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN

Esbilac with probiotics is what we recommend to feed a baby squirrel. Get 1cc syringes, too.

I have to take a moment and thank Lilyg as well! MOST, not all, but MOST of the babies I have received from people who have tried to take care of the babies themselves, have been in terrible shape. I have had 8 deaths this year because of this, but this little girl is in MARVELOUS shape!! Thank you for realizing that it was probably too much for you to handle, BEFORE she got on deaths door. I am really sure this little girl will be running free in the trees in no time!!
