hello all, ive not been on here in a while. i have 2 fox squirrels. 1 is male sherriff roscoe p. coletrane who is 6 and crazygirl who is 5.
my oldest has been acting a bit strange latey, hes not wanting to drink much water, and i found out the hard way he is allergic to raw walnuts. he has had tail chewing issues for a few years now and i have figured out the cause links to me giving him walnuts with the green shell on it. ive spoke with a few people on here throughout the years whom have been a blessing and a big help. He started chewing his tail again last week right after i gave him a walnut. so i have been pushing watermelon, grapes along with what he normally eats (the henry blocks and peanut butter sticks for treats) along with veggies, and good greens, along with a bit of junk food.
so ive noticed hes not been feeling well, and im sure its because the tail chewing/blood. i have been cleaning and soaking it and thankfully hes not chewed at it anymore, but im starting to worry because he dont seem to be drinking much fluids, and the other day i noticed when he peed, it was a pinkish red color, which could have been from a strawberry or watermelon. hes also going through his summer/winter molt, but he seems to me like hes lost a lot of weight. And i am worried he might have worms. i watched a cat for the girl next door and noticed the cat had the round worms, and i went out and got meds to treat the cat, but not sure how to see if hes got worms or what is going on with him. plus its always nice to have a vet that can see them. so, does anyone know of a vet that will see them without a permit??
and two, how do you test at home to see if they have worms??
i also have some pee strips that test humans to see if they have a uti, i am wondering if maybe i should try somehow to get his urine and use the strips to see whats going on??
if i cant find a vet, any advice or suggestions would be great to help me figure out whats going on with my little guy. He is in his nest right now, but i will try to get pictures of him and post tomorrow. He does sometimes go through "little funks" so im not sure if its that, or if something is going on with him. my gut feels like its more then likely worms maybe, but not sure.
thanks :)

these are a few pictures i took tonight of him in his room after i gave him a pumpkin. hes is a lot slimmer then he usually is, and with that cat having worms, made me wonder if he did not get them too, or something else is going on.

If you can't get a vet Panacur is great for worms. We can tell you how to dose it if you get it.

oh thank you two!!! i will message her now, and i am hoping its just worms. the cat was in the same room as me and the babies. the cat had worms and fleas. so i treated the cat for both. but now wondering if thats why rosco has lost a lot of weight even though he still eats just fine.

What did you use for the cat?

If the cat had fleas too, you should also probably treat for tapeworms. Fleas are awesome spreaders of tapeworms.

yes, the cat had tape worms. the girl next door is super young and has no clue. i paid to get her cats fixed after she had kittens, and the girl "didnt have time" to pick her cat up, so the vet called me asking what to do with the cat because it had been there 2 days. since i paid for it they called me since they couldnt get a hold of her, and thats when i noticed all the fleas and worms. so i treated the cat, and starting to think rosco got something out of it.

what do i look for to get rid of worms?? i do have some duraMrctin (ivermectin) paste 1.87% on hand from where the outside squirrels had mange and i used it to treat them. (they are fine now and have their hair grown back) if i cant use this can someone send me a link where i can buy it online??

thanks so much. hes not been acting like his usual self, and i am starting to get worried. he usually has man boobs, and since about a week after the cat was here he has seemed to lost weight, and then he had an allergic reaction to a raw walnut. i cant imagine my life without him and they mean the world to me like you all know. i did have a vet for him when he was younger, but he retired a few years back.

Are you checking the fur for tapeworms..?? If the squirrels didn't have fleas, then tapeworm is unlikely. .. what part of Indiana ?? Might have members who could help with meds ... But if he is not drinking water, you need to supplement somehow. Grapes, watermelon, FV...

I think Drontal works for TWs.
