Basil is bleeding again.

Its been over a month since his encounter with the tree cutter.. that resulted in severe pelvic bruising and a week or two later... blood mucus in his urine . http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?47156-Blood-in-urine

He JUST finished up his meds. a few days ago and he was acting sick again today. He is not very cooperative. BUT I managed to get a not so sterile sample from him today. I took it to the vet. No bacteria was found but " significant blood " Which I suspected cause it looked like watered down tea. He has an apt in the morning with the vet.

What do you guys think the chances are that he has internal bleeding still in his kidneys or something? The Vet tech that called suspected it was from a " RECENT" fall. When I told her it was nearly a month ago... well then the APT was made.

Do you think I will lose Basil? Can you live for a month with internal damage? He is about 9 weeks old .. maybe ten. He was big when I got him.. fully furred cept his very lower belly.. bout 80 grams or maybe 90. Eyes opened 4 days after I received him.

He has always been grumpier, bites, and slightly more lethargic than his Blood Kin sister, Tess.. and New brother Pip and Sunny.

So worried about what the vet will say. I am afraid that they will have bad news. BUT maybe they will just treat with a wait and see. He is scheduled to be released in a few weeks.. but this may delay...

I sure hope not! I looked at the other thread. The picture in the first post didn't look like blood to me. It looked like mucous/pus which would indicate an infection. It seemed Basil responded to the Cipro and got better, right? The fact that he responded to an antibiotic further indicates that this is an infection. This might be a treatment failure. Sometimes an antibiotic will suppress an infection but not eradicate it completely (sorta like putting your finger on a flea ... while holding it down, it is suppressed ... remove your finger and it hops away ... suppressed but not killed) :tilt Treatment failures are common with UTIs. Blood in the urine can also be associated with infection. I doubt he would have survived internal bleeding for a month. It would have resolved itself or killed him by now IMO.

Don't think about a worst case scenario. :grouphug See what the vet thinks. He will probably prescribe a different antibiotic. If he responds again to antibiotics you'll know that you are dealing with an infection. I have a cat that is getting recurrent UTIs. The vet told me that sometimes they have to be treated for many weeks to clear a UTI.

Ah thank you . A voice of sanity :)

What your saying is making sense . Thank you.

Hoping the vet echos it !

Ok. You had good advice. Vet thinks he is still breaking down bruising and such but is treating him with metacam for swelling and with amox ( for some reason)

She also gave some health boost formula that I am Leary of but will post about that elsewhere.

She thinks he is gonna make it and he was even well behaved ! He is not as lethargic today either.
First doses are in.

Ask your vet about SMZ-TMP for a UTI. That's all I
ever use for a UTI. Baytril/Cipro can cause a
secondary yeast infection so then a sulfa drug
like SMZ is necessary.

Will do.
