View Full Version : NEED HELP! Found two baby squirrels (between 4-6 weeks old) Montreal
Hi
I found two baby squirrels, one may be injured... i need to find someone who will take care of them. i build a box and placed it in the tree in front of my home. i haven't put the squirrels in it yet, not sure if there mother is still alive. Im freaking out!
At the momment they're in a box coverd in a blanket. Its going on the second day, I gave one some water with salt and sugar, but the other one would'nt drink. Im afraid they'll die if something isn't done soon.
I may be able to keep them one more day...not sure yet. If i cant find anyone today. Im afraid ill have to take them to the SPCA. Please HELP if you can.
Thank you

I just posted a link to your thread in the emergency section in an attempt to get you some help.
If Mom has not come back yet, she will most likely not be coming back.
Please place a heating pad 1/2 UNDER the box they are in.
God job on trying to keep them hydrated; please keep trying and make sure the hydration fluid is very warm. (not hot, just very warm)
Hopefully some of our Canada members will be able to point you in the right direction for help.

Oh poor babies :( Yes please follow Milo's Mom's directions...they need to be warm, that may be why your one little one isn't drinking. Also, if the hydration fluid isn't warm they may not drink...please try to get the second one to drink ....they will not last long with out fluids....you could put some molasses, or maple syrup on the gums to help (with qtip or fingers) stimulate its interest in eating :thumbsup I'm praying for you and them :bowdown Hold tight, we have some great members in Canada...just give them a chance to check in:thumbsup
:thankyou Thanks so much for what you're doing...these little guys would be dead if it wasn't for you:Love_Icon You're an Angel :grouphug
Oh and if you don't have a heating pad...you can make a rice buddy....pour plain dry rice into a sock..tie the end and heat in the microwave ....squish it around to make sure it doesn't have any hot spots (depending on the size it should only take 30 seconds in the microwave, just keep checking) then put it in the container curl it around...put fleece or an old t-shirt over it and snuggle them in the little pocket:thumbsup
Hot water in a bottle wrapped in something soft will even work if you have none of the above...just be careful of the temperature and you will have to refill with hot water more often:thumbsup Sorry for babbling on, they are just so cute! Thanks again:Love_Icon

Instead of the GM formula, you should get Esbilac powder with probiotics on the label. It's available in pet stores in Canada. Whoever takes them from you will appreciate the help. You should also get a 1cc syringe from a pharmacy and follow proper feeding technique, even for hydration:

thank you for your alert, F.
I can help with some supplies - i have syringes, nipples, some FV.
But I cannot take anyone. The school year started, and I wish I had additional 12 hours per day just for all the stuff I have to do, let alone taking care of two babies.
As a start, Goat's milk formula should be ok. Unless you have been able to find Esbilac as shown in F's pic.
Maybe, Iwonka and/or Scooterzmom will know of someone who could take them.
Just hold off bringing them to the SPCA - usually, they get euthanized, esp. right now as all SPCAs must be inundated with babies squirrels with not enough people to care for them.
It's not easy to find right away someone to take them.
Give it some time.
Even if Iwonka may know of someone who could take them, it may take her some time to find/connect/contact/etc.
Hi everyone
Thanks for all you're help. I took the day off today, so i could find a way to help them. I left some nuts on the branches near the home i build, hoping the mommy squirrel was still around, three days have gone by and still no sign of her. I'm afraid tragedy has befallen her.
I found the squirrels at my dad's house, circumstances being what they are i was unable to keep them any longer, i just got back from dropping them off at the SPCA on Jean-Talon street.
It wasn't easy and quite sad, i got attached to them. If anyone is still interested in taking them you can contact The SPCA at 514-732-2711

I feel so bad about the situation...i wish i could have kept them longer. I can still see there little faces, when i found them. They looked so frightened. I'm so angry with myself i wanted to do so much more for them.
Sorry everyone

:shakehead I too, wished she could have waited :boohoo
I feel horrible, except for you people on this forum, there was no one else i could find that would help.
i called the City, the SPCA the local Vet...Nothing! i even called Montreal: Urban Animal Advocates, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at
514-366-9965 and there answering machine was full.
I don’t wanna pass on the blame to anyone...i feel totally responsible for there deaths.
If your gonna run a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre someone should answer the phone! If for whatever reason you can not, then a message would have been acceptable. NOT! this mail box is full! ( i understand that they are most probably inundated with calls...i get it!... and its wonderful that they are doing this.)
In the future maybe a helpful message (eg: the do's and dont's, maybe an explanation why they don’t answer, directions to a website, an email address, other people in the area that can help.)
All this would have helped...if not me, maybe someone else
Thanks again you're all wonderful people for doing what you do

Being swamped with babies and calls, just like veryone else in our area, I just got alerted to this thread. Urban Animal Advocates is a registered organization, that for one thing is different than Iwonka and myself who are just doing this with no help from the public except that of a few people like ourselves who are willing to spend the time, the money and the emotional investment in those little babies.
Now, I cannot speak for UAA but I do know for a fact that they would only have said to euthanize because all of their people are overloaded and they do not take babies that need overwintering. Some people who called me said they had called and reached them and that is what they were told. :(
As for ourselves, i.e. Iwonka and myself, we don't have anyone else left to take in babies. We have worked our tushies off trying to find more but between the tons of calls, the feedings, the trying to convince people who call to take care of the babies they found, the avice etc and for Iwonka the work, it barely leaves time to catch some zz and we do not have anyone left. We even sent some babies 3 hours drive away to be fostered by someone who used to live in Montreal. Personally I have 10 live-in squirrels right now, and they will be here all winter; 2 of those are babies who until today were on a 6 hour sked, and 2 on a 4 hour sked with hubby gone all day 5 days a week. Sleep you say? You do the maths… :/ I'm sure UAA is dealing with some of the same and there is only so much a person can humanely do.
Let's face it, the tragic reality is, we cannot always be available, at every minute of the day, every day… and that goes for any and all rehabbers… unfortunately. It doesn't make the outcome any less sad, any less tragic, I know, but those are the facts and it may be easy to judge the rehabbers when you do not live their reality. I'm really very sorry for these poor babies. :Cry I you could have waited a couple of hours and maybe, just maybe, it might have been different. Just sayin'. Not placing blame. :(

gc10 it does matter :grin3 I guess I'm gender biased :hidechair I don't always think guys are going to try and help...WHICH...is wrong cuz lots of guys help here :thumbsup and my husband would do the same:bowdown
Please do not take responsibility for the deaths of these babies :shakehead it's sad...but you did the right thing...the only thing you could do at the time :dono this is how the system works :nono that is certainly not your fault...I hope you didn't take that from what I said...I was only wishing there could have been more time :Love_Icon I understand it does not always work that way...people have jobs, obligations :dono at least you "did" something...you tried...and the system sucks and it failed :( but...please know at least these babies didn't suffer a horrible death outside...it was at least humane. :thankyou for caring :grouphug

Thanks Swf :) but we're no heroes. If we were we would perform miracles. It's nice to know that people do understand though. Between the few people who rehab here, we recruit as many volunteers as we can. The trouble is, finding people who will overwinter is almost as rare as pope poop. That's the biggest issue at this time of year.
I was not angry when I posted. More like just frustrated because we can't be everywhere all at once. I hate knowing something can be done but things not getting done because we just "missed". It breaks my heart.
