Picking up baby squirrel, less than 5 min away. do not know age or weight yet. people said he is covered in flies & possibly mites & looks very weak. How long should i give him water from syringe until i can give him formula? I have fox valley at home. Do i use joy detergent with wet wash cloth for flies and mites? Any advice, I would be grateful.

Warm first
Hydrate with hydration fluid for 24 hours
Start on diluted formula and work to full strength
Depending on the level of dehydration you may need to do some "in between" water feedings (feed at 12, water at 2, feed at 4, water at 6, etc.)
DAWN dishsoap

You are a doll!!! Thank u :) It's a little boy approx 7 - 8 weeks old.
Got him warm, fed him 5 cc's of sugar water. He is sleeping in a fleece snuggie close to my body until i plug heating pad in. How often should i feed him the sugar water? He was starving! He grabbed a hold of that syringe with both hands! :)
Need prayers for this little gift!!! He is beautiful!!!

OK, calm down and let's back up for a minute.
When did you get the little one.
When you say pedialyte mixture what do you mean,
the homemade one with water, salt and sugar?
How old is he, and how long have you had him.
ARE his eyes open?
Do you have him on LOW heat?
I will wait for your answers for a while before I ask more
questions.
Can you post pictures?

Nancy, I originally posted earlier today with refresher course om emergency board. Got him tonight at 7pm. Eyes were opened. He wrapped both of his hands around syringe and took drop by drop up to 5 cc's. Have him in box on heating pad low, started trying to feed at 9. Yes mixture is 4 cups water ((1 quart) 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon sugar. No injuries. let me get on computer downstairs and send pic to this link.
Thanks Nancy

If he took 5 cc's already, he may be full. Clearly he is under 100 grams, and the rule of thumb is
5-7% of their body weight.
He may be full for now.
edit: Just a little recap, he took 5 cc's at 7:00 tonight, correct?

I would give him 5% body weight of pedialyte every 3-4 for 12 to 24 hours,
depending on how dehydrated he is.... then start him on the diluted formula.
....... all is well... baby is not dying - he just has a full tummy. (((hugs)))

Honestly he can't be 8 grams.....Put a quarter and a dime in your hand, that is 8 grams.
Is he heavier than that? (God I hope so). :grin2
Go weigh a quarter and a dime and let me know what you get, OK?

Oh he is a little one, so 5 cc's is quite a bit, he probably won't take any for a while, but you should still potty him now if you have not already, as he will have to go potty, most likely (although may not if he is really dehydrated). Def. not 8 grams.

Yeah - I see it is a digital scale, but some thing has to be off, as he weighs
more than 8 grams (that would make him a pinkie). I would place him at a
good 50 to 60 grams and that would be placing him under weight.

There is definitely something wrong with the scale. If it runs on batteries they may need changing or try changing mode from grams to ounces and see what you get. One ounce = 28.35 grams (I rounded it off).

Have you ever raised a squirrel before?
Just asking if you want us to try to find a rehabber for you.
We have several in Maryland that we can reach out to.
This little one may not pee right away, he is so dehydrated.
BUT if you see the tummy getting hard and doesn't go down,
and has not peed or pooped, then nothing by mouth until we
get the tummy, (bloat) down.

One more thing, please tell your brother to listen and watch for more.
Send him this link and tell him this is what he needs to be listening for.
If this baby was coming down the tree and barely hangin on, there couold be
more and most likely mama is not around.

Thanks Nancy. This little guy will be my 3rd squirrel. The two prior were not dehydrated like this little guy & I panicked. I have fox valley formula powder & block in freezer from Henrys. We are meeting a new vet in our area this Friday (taking 2 sugar gliders to her to get exam) & will see if she can be on stand by for this little guy. He should be able to potty himself, but I will keep an eye on his tummy. Step was a HUGE help with our first squirrel, Mercy. He had broken leg & abcess from cat bite. He still visits us. Pecan was our second & we released earlier this year. They have brought lots of love and joy to us. I'm sure we will be good with this little guy, especially with all of your support!!! Thank u soooo much for helping. ♡

Hey Trysh,
He is still not out of the woods yet but he is A LOT better today!!! He doesn't want me to put him down & he climbs fast so he can stay close to me. I started him on diluted fox valley this afternoon and doing hydration in between feedings. He is so beautiful, I know he's gonna make it & I'm not going to think any other way. When we first brought him home, I didn't think he was going to make it. He was really dehydrated but I've been getting fluids in him drop by drop. His last feedings, he drank .5 cc's of fluid & 2 cc's of diluted formula. I have to feed him often as he will only take so much at a time. He is going potty both ways. Has dark runny stools but I'm glad he's going. His energy level has improved from last night. So far so good ♡ I messages step but I'm sure he is still snoozin! lol I will probably hear back from him today. Will upload more pics to this thread in little bit so you guys can see this little stinker! lol And yes, everyone on this board is AMAZING & super helpful. I wouldn't be able to be a part of this precious little gift if it wasn't for this board! You are in MD right? Do you have any babies this season? Or should I ask how many babies do you have? ;-)

Could someone please help? We have had Miracle since last weds. The 1st few days were rough, but he started coming around and had been doing really good. I have been feeding him FV full strength (worked up to) and have been adding 1/3 vanilla flavored yoplait to formula. This past Mon his weight was 103g and was eating 7 cc's every feeding. He weighed 100g this morning (1 day later) and has been taking less formula (started with 4 cc's, went to bathroom, slept) and each feeding after that he was eating less and less down to 3 cc's. His stomach looked a little bloated after he ate 3 cc's at 9:30 p.m. I gave him .3 cc simethicone & laid him flat over my shoulder, patted him for 20 min and massaged his tummy until he was clearly uncomfortable, pushing my fingers away. During the patting and the massaging he twitched a few times. He is not clicking but he does sneeze every once in a while. He is peeing great & but he did not poop today. (He has been pooping and everything has looked great) I noticed him scratching at his ears earlier today and he also shook his head a few times. Most of the day & night he sleeps in between feedings. I feed, he goes to the bathroom and wants to go back to sleep. Is this normal for an approx 6 week old squirrel to be this tired? He has sneezed a few times but I have been very careful with feeding and also use miracle nipples. I have attached some pictures to show you his belly. It does feel a little firm but still squishy. He curls up in a ball and doesn't want me touching his tummy. Also, he was covered in Flies when my brother 1st found him and I found maggot eggs on his back and his legs. I gave him 1/4 capstar and diluted with a little water last Sunday.
1st Question: Does his stomach look overly bloated? If so, how much and how often can I give him the simethicone & is .3 the appropriate dose for 100 g baby? Also, as long as I can get the bloat down in his tummy can I continue to feed him? I was thinking I should add 3 parts of water to FV instead of 2 parts. Will be going tomorrow to get Esbilac with ProBiotics instead of using Yogurt. Any other suggestions?
2nd Question: Is it a possibility that he could have pneumonia? He clicks a little after eating, but it does not continue. He does not click in his sleep. However, he does sleep a lot. Not sure if this is normal. During the day after I feed him, he does run to the potty and he is pretty quick and that hasn't changed.
Am I being paranoid and this is just bloat? I just get so attached to these little guys...I don't want anything to happen to him :(
farrelli

A couple drops of infant simethicone can't hurt.
Clicking isn;t necessary for pneumonia but lethargy and lack of appetite usually accompany.

MLM, this is the dosage if you had a 50mg tablet -- per Jackie in Tampa a few years ago:
crush 50mg baytril
add 4 ccs water
dose for 60 gram sq is
0.05ml{cc}
once a day with probiotics.
CAN ANYONE ELSE convert this to the dose if you had a 250mg tablet?? I DO NOT trust MY MATH.

A huge change from yesterday! He's been running around, crawling all over me, bathroom breaks are normal :bliss
I have him in a temp play pen with the zipper lid and right as feeding time comes around, he takes both of his hands, and lunges at the side of the playpen making a growling noise. When ever I raised baby squirrells I went to the pet store and bought a milk replacement for orphan kittens. If they woudnt suck from a little bottle Iwould use a syringe or medacine dropper

We always recommend Puppy Esbilac with probiotics (powdered), for neonates and NEVER feed with a bottle or a dropper as they can easily aspirate.
When they are eyes opened you can switch to Fox Valley 20/50 and the Esbilac with probiotics. Do half FV and half Esbilac, they come out just perfect!:thumbsup
Pinkies and up to eyes open use a 1 cc syringe with a nipple, and feed in an upright position.

I'm lovin how easy the esbilac mixes! No clumps! FV i would mix with hot water and then put that container in a bowl with hot hot water just to get clumps to dissolve and mix. He is a feisty one! lol
