Guys, something is going on with Tori. This morning for breakfast she was eager as always. Then 2cc's down she did this gagging thing and blew blood bubbles out of her nose! I tipped her over, wiped her nose, looked in her mouth (saw nothing), cleaned her up and offered her the rest of her food. She did not want it. That was about 9am. Then when I placed her back in the bin she made several more of the gagging noises (almost sounded like a bark), a few sniffs/pffts with her nose and went to sleep.

I've been watching her and listening to her. Her lungs sound okay, but her rate of breathing is twice as fast as her brothers. She is not doing open mouth breathing. I just fed them lunch and she was hungry. She ate very slowly and without her usual gusto.

She is not doing the usual motoring around, and seems, at times to have trouble getting comfortable.

She has heat available and she moves on and off of it like one would expect at her age.

I am left to think that maybe during breakfast she bit the back of her tongue to produce the blood????? :thinking

I am concerned that her breathing rate is so much more elevated.

Do you think she aspirated? Shall I start Baytril? Do I wait and watch? If so, for how long?

In the past I've had babies that are snorklers and are forever blowing bubbles, but that's just them and they are fine. This rapid breathing has me concerned.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I tipped her over head down, wiped her nose, then when that was done I flipped her onto her back and looked in her mouth.

Milo's Mom you know way more than me...but could she be hurting...and that's why she's breathing harder? :dono Maybe from biting her tongue as you suggested? Blood always scares the crap out of me. :( I pray Princess Tori is ok :bowdown :Love_Icon

I have no answers and couldn't do anymore then what your doing
by guessing to cover the basics. Even if she were to have "aspirated"
the blood makes no sense to me. Rapid breathing could be anything
from scared to pain to something medical in between.
I hope it's nothing serious, for now it sounds like observation is really
all you can do. I'll send you both some prayers that all be well... :grouphug

After the "episode" at breakfast she did curl into a ball with her head down and tucked for a few minutes. BUT, these guys sleep in all kinds of weird and wild contorted ways. Right now she is sleeping on her side and a few moments ago she was spread eagle on her back.

I was a bit surprised with the blood (I always am) but they are just at that age when they are figuring out what to do with their teeth.

I too thought she was scared; so at first I was not overly concerned with the rapid breathing. But it's now nearly 5 hours later and she's still doing it.

I hate jumping to chemicals and meds right away. Determining the "appropriate time" to go to them is very difficult. (at least for me) I like to know what I am treating before I start treating, but being behind the eight ball terrifies the heck out of me!!!

Thanks for the prayers and responses. :grouphug:grouphug

Betsy if the bloody discharge doesn't disappear after that one incident, I would start her on a course of doxycycline JUST in case. We don't want to mess with bordatella......

Not a clue but the fact that she was spread eagle seems like it might be a good sign. Maybe she got scared with the head tilting but you would think she would have gotten over that by now. I guess all you can do is watch and wait but we are here with you. :grouphug

Oh jeez, THAT never crossed my mind!! :eek I have not seen it since, but I'll have my eagle eyes on her.

The sniffing/pffffting has stopped.

I have not "measured" her breathing rate, but it also MIGHT have slowed a tiny bit.

I'll just keep watching, VERY closely.

Thank you IR!! :grouphug

That's what I was thinking and the fact that I flipped her over and pried her mouth open should/would have scared the bejesus out of her.

Watching and waiting for now.

It is very reassuring to know that TSB is here. Thank you!! :grouphug

How is Tori? Has her rate of breathing returned to normal?
Any more blood being coughed up?

Just came up from the basement to feed them.

No, it does not look like her breathing has returned to normal. What it does look like is that she is taking lots of quick shallow breaths. I will see how she responds to eating.

I listened to her lungs 2 hours ago and I cannot tell a difference between her and her brothers. (and I listened with my eyes closed so my brain would not make me think I heard something) The BF handed them to me one at a time (his eyes were open). :)

I do not see anymore blood.

Going to feed them right now. Will update when they're done.

Oh I'm so worried :dono are you going to start ABs since you haven't seen improvement (with the breathing)? Man, this stinks...I just wish I knew something to help....all I can do is send my love and prayers :grouphug

I just don't know what to think.

She was hungry and she took 15cc's, but I had to put the syringe in her mouth along with a drop of formula. She normally fusses and whines and wiggles reaching for the syringe.

Whatever is going on she is certainly feeling punk.

Still her lungs sound normal. Nothing is coming out of her nose at all. She is in the bin, on her belly, tail up over her back, asleep.

I wouldn't do anything at this point except watch her breathing. Some babies really do breathe very quickly and even erratically and it can scare the bejeesus out of you. She took a good amount of nourishment and is sleeping peacefully, so take it slow. :)

Could this be blood from her teething?
Sometimes it looks like a lot of blood when mixed in with the saliva, and
then you see nothing the next time. :dono

Initially when I saw the blood that is exactly what I thought. Due to the amount and the fact she was blowing it out her nose (not mixed with anything - bright red blood) I thought maybe she bit herself.

The elevated breathing is what has me most concerned. And the fact that it did not return to normal shortly thereafter.

I got a video and will get it posted in minute.

Guys, I just gave her Baytril.

I watched the video myself and something is wrong. The little girl in the video is NOT my Princess Tori after eating.

The thing that prompted me to start this thread (which I see now I neglected to mention) was that even though she has heat and moves on and off of it, this afternoon/late morning she felt cool.

Her feeling cool coupled with the breathing (quick and shallow) could mean she is not getting enough oxygen which is giving her low blood pressure. (thank you Maura!!!!) :bowdown

It may or may not be aspiration but there is something going on causing her to breathe like this and it's not right.

I would have done the exact same thing.
Just remember probiotics 2 hours before or 2 hours after dosing.
I know sometimes when they are our own, things go right out of our heads.

Thank you Sweeper. I try to go with my gut most times, but there are times when my head keeps getting in the way! :grin3 Second opinions and other eyes are always a good thing, especially when you're talking meds so I always like to double check just to make sure.

Tori's breathing is about the same (no, I did not expect it to change that fast) and she seems to be resting more peacefully/comfortably. :Love_IconThroughout the day she kept changing positions and seemed unsettled or just uncomfortable.

Hopefully things will continue to improve and this will soon be behind us, whatever the heck it is.

Every time I hear a pfffft from their bin I jump and run to look at them. Who did that? Is everyone ok? Do a quick nose check on everyone. I'm gonna drive myself nuts!

Just did the last feeding for the day and things went a little better. Tori grabbed at the syringe and even grumped at me. Her poop was blood brown. The gagging this morning must have been her swallowing blood. I looked in her mouth again and I still see nothing out of the ordinary. Whatever it was bled a lot, she swallowed enough of it to change the color of her poop and she most likely aspirated on it too. (this is just my guess based on the days events and changes noted)

Her breathing is still fast, but like I said before she seems more comfortable and settled.

She took another 15cc's for dinner. Pee was good and plentiful and we already talked about the poop!

Thank you everyone for your ideas and suggestions and for just being here for us! :grouphug

Sorry for the late update, my Mom called with an emergency and we just walked back in the door.

Tori was hungry this morning and did a mild version of her regular little self. She took only 12cc's versus her norm of 15. Lunch is being served momentarily.

Her breathing has slowed a bit. She is still doing a lot of sleeping compared to her brothers, but when they trample on her she once again fights back.

I have not heard anymore sneezing, gagging, coughing, or pfffting. There is absolutely no discharge coming from her nose.

Lunch and dinner went well.

She's still not "herself" but she is a heck of a lot different than she was yesterday. For lunch she took 15cc's and for dinner she took 12.5.

After dinner I placed her in the potty box; she did her business and then tried to climb the sides till Gavin joined her in the potty box.

Her breathing continues to get better. She may indeed breathe faster than her brothers as she is now a solid 2 to their 1; whereas before she was closer to 3 to their 1.

It's time for her nighttime meds and I always feel so bad for waking her up (she looks so comfy and peacefully unaware) to take yukky medicines.

Hopefully tomorrow we can call this thread dead and we can return to their main thread! :thumbsup

Yes, Princess Tori is doing much better. Meds are done, breathing is still faster than her brothers but I think that is her norm. She is being a total diva and I swear she is doing it on purpose. She is quite the little character. And she has one of the most adorable little faces too.:tilt
