We just changed cages for our 3year old grey squirrel named Sparky and my husband was having play time outside and she was fine..but like twenty minutes later he went to take her out again before bedtime and noticed that her right ear was kind of swollen and turning a slight purple color..we were hoping that it was just from her playing with the new wood piece in her cage or maybe she bumped into the side of the cage when we were taking her out..but it's been three days now and her ear is still very swollen almost looks like a pillow..but the color is back to normal..she isn't acting like she's sick or different from her normal playfulness..but is definitely sore and does cry if you touch it. Was hoping it had just been bumped and would go back to normal by itself.but after three days and it's getting more swollen every day..concerns us.any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated...:) thanks

Pics would help. What's her diet? Is there a cut?

Could she have gotten bit by something that caused that swelling?

when touched, or if you have touched it, does the site feel squishy sort of like a soft marshmallow? may be have been a bruise or bump but with my experience, it sounds like it may possibly be the beginning of an abscess. could you post pics when you get a chance? :)

Can you post a picture? I think we could be more help if we could see this area.

I can't post pictures but no there's no cuts..she has a good diet we haven't changed anything but the cage...I was thinking that maybe she got it pinched on one of the bigger pieces of wood that she likes to try to pick up with her mouth and move..

Not that I'm aware of..we don't have any other pet's and wasn't outdoors when this happened..thanks

And the diet?

Are you unable to post pics because you don;t know how, or don;t have a camera?

Yes it does..it was purple and swollen but now it's back to normal color but it is still very much swollen...we thought it was a blood blister and checked if there was a head to it like a pimple but so far nothing..I'm trying to find a way to post pictures but all I have is a hand held kindle fire for internet..but will ask someone to help me post later tonight when they get out of work..thanks

No all I have to work with for internet is a kindle fire..but am having a friend coming over tonight after work so I can use their cell phone to post a few pictures..had squirrel blocks but fruits and veggies and bag food from pet store..but she did have a few acorns the other day..we went through a bad time when we first found her and didn't know that they were not supposed to have more than 1-3 a day..she's been very healthy and happy since that happened about 2&a half years ago..

awesome pics would help tremendously. Keep an eye on the area, if you see any white/thick/bloody/or any discoloration of leakage at any point it is likely some form of infection or abscess and will need oral antibiotic treatment promptly. for now just keep an eye on it, abscesses are nasty buggers to deal with. Hoping that abscess is not the issue..and hoping it is something more minor, keep us posted please :)

Gotta run, but please review the healthy diet thread. Poor nutrition is the cause of most of the problems we see. What kind of rodent blocks? Some are terrible for them.

I was thinking more along the lines of a spider, an ant or some kind of pest.
