View Full Version : Hairless Baby Squirrel

Hi....I found a baby squirrel in my backyard today. He is completely hairless, except for a little bit on the very end of his tail. He is old enough to eat seeds under my bird feeder but is very small. He was not in the least bit afraid of me. The other squirrels were chasing him so I put him in a cage for the night and will take him to a wildlife rehabilitator tomorrow if they will take him. Can he survive in the wild like this or will he freeze to death? He is nothing but skin and bone. See pictures below.

This baby needs help and :thankyou for taking the time to do so! He has something that is keeping the hair from growing, and would probably lead to him freezing to death at some point, if not treated. I wonder if Sammysmom is close to you. I wish I was closer, as I would love to help him, but I am over on the Left Coast! :Love_Icon
Edit - Also, you need to give him something besides seeds. They are giving him absolutely nothing nutrition wise. I don't have the link handy, but others can give you the link on what to give him until you get him to a rehabber.

Be VERY careful with rehabbers and shelters. Some are great, but some will lie and put him down. They think sqs aren't worth the time. Always ask if you can get updates.
I will alert two MA people to see if perhaps one of them will take him. I wonder if he has severe mange.

I just PMd Pappy and Rocky.

Where are you located? I am in Ma, north of Boston. Looks like mange, been quite a bit of it seen this year.
Ok, I see you are in Plymouth, that is about 80 miles from me. I think Rocky is closer, although will see if he responds.

08-21-2014, 10:22 PM
If you cannot find anyone closer, I could take her, as I have the meds. Would you be willing to travel?
farrelli
08-21-2014, 10:24 PM
I think that Rocky is about 50 minutes away, so maybe he's an option too.

Yes, he is closer. I am about an hour and a half from Plymouth.

Btw, how is the little guy doing?
linda133
08-21-2014, 10:39 PM
Thank you all for your help. I'm a little concerned about how well he will travel as he is a little freaked out being in the cage. I have absolutely no experience with squirrels, other than to watch their antics from my deck, so I would feel better not having to travel any further than necessary but will do whatever I have to do to get him to a good place. He really is such a cute little guy. I was going to take him to Cape Cod Wildlife Center, does anyone know anything about this place? I don't want to take him somewhere I'm not sure about now that I know they can't all be trusted. Please let me know.

Oh Linda133 :thankyou thank you so much for helping this poor baby :bowdown Please listen to what farrelli said...often these centers say they will help just to placate the public...they do not want bad press and as farrelli said they don't want or even have the time to help :dono it's a sad fact...pappy and Rocky are both excellent rehabbers that will get this baby straight :thumbsup so she can live a squirrelie life :Love_Icon
:thankyou again for caring enough to find help....you're an Angel :Love_Icon

Do you have lots of fleece or old T'shirts....even old flannel (no buttons) so he can dive in and hide? :thumbsup

Perfect. I would SO take that baby but am kinda far (hey Sweeper--ROAD trip?) I think there some good folks closer than Virginia.

Please do not take him to a wildlife center, they will euth. him. An individual rehabber, who can give him the time he needs, is needed. He can recover, he needs meds, good food and time. I am sure he is scared and confused. Rocky is def. closer then I am but I am willing to take him, but cannot travel all the way to you.
May sound like a dumb question, but he is inside in the cage, correct?

Awesome. I hope we can get some updates on this guy. He looks very cute, and is apparently pretty friendly too?
Just remember to take precautions in case it's a bad case of mange.

This is not mange his skin is clear. He is similar to Paulie I had last year. I believe this is from malnutrition. he has had a small wound on top of his head but has healed.
farrelli: I will update as I can. I run a business as well as caring for the squirrels. my time is always well spoken for.

Today my little friend is looking better. I could see a real difference in his skin after giving him hydration fluid and the attitude that came with it. yesterday when I got him I was able to reach in the cage and pick him up. But as soon as he started feeling better it was your not going to touch me :tap
I have been slowly giving him 6:1 fox valley this morning. the good thing is that he likes the formula. so as time goes on I will increase the ratio and get him back to good health.
I haven't picked a name yet but my wife keeps calling him Mr. Biggles worth what ever that means. :dono Pictures to follow as soon as he will let me handle him.

Mr. Bigglesworth was the name for the hairless cat in the Austin Powers movie. :grin3 Glad to hear the little one is feeling better!

I did not think it was mange either..... I too thought his skin looked to clean & clear for that.
Hopefully this is just a nutritional issue and a good diet will bring him around. Good Luck - :Love_Icon

Mr. Bigglesworth is doing good. No real changes in him. He is still feisty as ever you would think that maybe after a week he might get used to us but he still hides under the fleece and charges when you get close.:eek He has put on a small amount of weight and no signs of fur growing yet.:tap we have him on Fox Valley 20/50 and can have all that he wants to take. Tonight we put a bowl of 20/50 in his cage and he is taking it from the bowl along with HHB's Boo balls and veggies. he loves to eat but we see little change. Hopefully he will start to show some sign of change. In the pictures below he looks a little dehydrated but he is not he drinks from his water bottle and takes the FV from us just not seeing any real changes yet.:tap He is welcome for as long as he wants to stay and has a nice heating pad under him to keep him warm.:Love_Icon

Oh my God, that last picture. He is CUTE with those big eyes and ears.
When Madamelipstick got her little bald red, it took him quite a while to get
his fur back.
Mr. B will be there in no time, though I do wonder what in the heck causes this. :dono

I too would like to know what causes this. I Had Little miss Paulie last year and she started to improve but then all of a sudden I lost her with no Idea of what was wrong. I know some people that have a disease that they loose all there hair wonder if this is similar?

What a cutie pie! Someone mentioned people losing all their hair - that is an autoimmune disease called Alopecia. I would assume squirrels could have autoimmune issues as well.
