Hello, sorry to bother you all I know there is a lot of need going on right now especially this time of year with new babies etc...
I have a dilemma.. I have an approx 18 week old squirrel named Sam who I think is ready for release...but I am located in an area that scares me to death to think about releasing him here. I live 2 houses away from a main 6 lane highway...I live in the city. My yard itself has only one small tree and there are trees in neighbors yards but they too are close to the highway. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to Sammy as a result of something I had done. Not to mention he is a pudgy little fella. I am concerned that his pudginess will affect his ability to flee from stray cats and/or hawks which are very regular here.
I also have a dove who is non-releasable. She/he had imprinted on me just over a year ago when she was rescued at a few days old. Her/his name is Sweet Lil Squirt. Beautiful little dove but will only take to me. And Sam is the same way, He only takes to me.
My problem is that I have 4, 12 week old kittens that I had rehabed from 1 to 2 weeks of age. They are very curious of Little Sweet and I fear that my attempts to protect her from them may be futile. If there is a rehaber near me (Fort Wayne, IN) that could take Sam for approx 2 to 3 weeks (long enough to acclimate him then release him) and could take little Sweet as a permanent member of their family I would be most appreciative. It breaks my heart having to even think of doing this but I love Sammy and Sweet so much that I want them safe!! Unfortunately, my attempts to become a rehaber have failed :( The rehabers I contacted to have me placed on their permit lists are no longer rehabing in and around this area anymore. And with my location being where it is and financially, it would not be wise. Not to mention our neighborhood association isnt all that thrilled of the idea.
I know this is a huge request....this is a HUGE stab in my heart as well. I love these babies and all the little babies. If only I could move to a location better able to provide what is needed for them... Please if anyone can help please let me know...

Hi LindaR
I'm so sorry that you're having problems with release and rehabbing permits. That's a real shame if you have to give up rehabbing due to permit problems and lack of a release site. I know a lot of the rehabbers here don't have their own release site and must depend on others that do have the appropriate site. I sure wished you lived closer to me. :(
Let's give this a little time and see if anyone in your area steps up to help.
I wanted you to know that I never forgot Hammie. Your little guy touched me so deeply I'll never forget him. It is because of Hammie's ordeal with a horrible infection, I have spent countless hours studying the proper treatment of wound infections in squirrels.
I really don't follow the 'this is the way it's always been done' mode anymore. There are better ways and I think we have seen successes with treating wounds with different antibiotics. Precious, precious Hammie :Love_Icon

oh thank you <3 your message really touches my heart. I loved Hammie so much, he truly was a one of a kind <3 You can imagine how much I dread the possibility of something happening to Sam. He too pulls my heart strings. I got cut yesterday pretty god too. and Sam sat by my injury during feeding time just staring and then pounced up into my arms and just stared at me. his disposition changed, it was different. it was like he knew I got hurt. When I left the cage after feeding him, he laid on his shelf as if to pout for a while. perhaps my imagination , but it was like he just knew and it displeased him almost to a point of compassion. He such a sweet lil guy.
Thank you for your mission to help, discover and learn more about wound infections in squirrels. I want to believe that my little Hammie's life was not in vain. HE touched my family and many others who knew him in a mighty way. Many of those people regard squirrels in a much different light now and higher respect. My husband spent hours making a memorial for Hammie. A plaque I have in my living room, a digital picture frame with all Hammies pics from the time I recieved him to last couple days before his passing, a beautiful squirrel fountain outside where I sit to watch all my back yard buddies. and rose bushes on each side of Hammies grave. Again thank you so much!!!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:grouphug: grouphug:grouphug:grouphug super hugs!!!!

OK, I am surprised that no one has responded more to this....I am desperate folks....Sam is a beautiful red, and I love him so. Yesterday against my better judgement I opened his release door which went fine for a while. then he totally disappeared for several hours. I did see him at one point bolt towards the highway. My heart SANK!!! my son and husband searched on foot several times, dreading finding him on the side of the road... I live 2 houses away from a 6 lane highway! Thankfully my prayers were answered, Sam was back in his home by 8 pm. I blocked his door at that point. I am desperate to find someone who will take him him long enough to acclimate and possibly release him somewhere much safer for release. I cannot rest until I know my little Sam is safer. I thought about contacting Second Hand Ranch in Illinois, but am not sure who to talk too or if that's even a possibility. Sam is such a sweet boy, a little on the chubby side. PLEASE PLEASE I will travel a couple hours if needed...I want my little Sam to be released in an area that will enhance his chances of survival and releasing him here contradicts just that...I could not forgive myself if anything happened to Sam because of something I could have prevented. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME, HELP SAM :Love_Icon

I would go ahead and contact 2nd hand ranch any way, they might be able to help you. I believe the person you want to talk to is Nancy, leave a message if she doesn't answer the phone and give her the details.
